Daniel Walking a tightrope a hundred feet above the ground without a safety net, was how Mr. Murray Ostrin described his new job at an official installation ceremony, Oct. 27 in the school auditorium. Mr. Ostrin thanked faculty and friends for their support and expressed his willingness to accept the heartaches and headaches of the job, Music, speeches and a genial atmosphere characterized the event which drew many distinguished people, including Assistant Superin- tendent of Queens High Schools, Mr. Abraham Wilner. Mr. Samuel Polatnick, director ofthe high school division of the Board of Education, and former principals of Van Buren: Mr, Maurice Bleifeld, who recently retired. and his predecessor, Mr. Paul Denn. ln his nllljor address, Mr. Wilner focused on Mr. Ostrin's zeal and tireless energy which. he said. would enable this prin- cipal to do an excellent job and to guarantee Van Buren's continued scholastic excellence. Mr. Wilner especially thanked the Parents Association for their wise choice. Greta Singer, an English teacher and U,F.'l', chairperson of Van Buren. said she hoped to see Mr. Ostrin carry on the humane .ind liberal traditions ol' his inl- ncdiate predecessor. Mr. Arthur Fraiger. who had served as interim principal from September i976 to .lune 1977. Student Organization President Mary Timmins said that she wits ..,,llt.1..g' that Mr. Ostrin would coi. -: .. lo meet with students and tho-v 'ln interest in their opinions sie-vig Y Mr. Patrick Scrvillo. president ol the Parents Association. also welcomed Mr. Ostrin and wished him lhe best oi' luck on behalf of the parents. Ms. Ann Moss spoke hrielly, congratulating Mr. Ostrin on behalf of Oueells Borough President Donald Manes. Musical elections, pertormed by Van Buren's Mixed Chorus. conducted by Mrs. Marian Pierce, included ll by David Gates and On My lournev' by the Weavers. 'lhc Symphonic Band, con- ducted by Mr. Arthur Stracher. played the Prelude and Fugue in G minor by Johann Sebastian Bach and the second suite from the Military March in F by Gustav Hoist.
