The Executive Board also al- lots money to other school functions, honor societies, teams and clubs, and was instrumental in the purchase of a new sound system for the school. The Advisory Council, consisting of students, parents and teachers who meet weekly, discusses matters con- cerning school affairs. BRIDGE, CHESS AND BACKGAMMON CLUB 29 Stefan Regnell, Van Buren's first foreign exchange student from Swe- den, came to us in September after going through a long detailed selec- tion process. Stefan had to write essays about himself and go through a personal in- terview. He was asked questions about his knowledge of English, which he has been studying since the third grade, and his ability to get along with others. On the whole Stefan finds New York lacking because of the social conditions and municipal services. He does, however, admire our multi-eth- nic society. Stefan pointed out that there are many similarities between teenagers in the United States and Sweden. ln particular they have the same taste in rock music. His favorite groups are Santana, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and ELO. The average Saturday night is spent in much the same way as here. Not surprisingly, Stefan's opinion of American girls is not as high as his opinion of Swedish girls. Thank good- ness the boys in Van Buren like Ameri- can girls. Club, one of the more insane organizations available to the stu- dents, has been in existence since the beginning of recorded history here at Martin Van Buren. It is rumoured that Mr. Van Buren himself was once the lead singer. But seriously, the Folk Club, in keep- ing with its long standing record of fine performances, did it again this year. They sang their beautifully ar- ranged harmonies for children at pub- lic schools, as well as senior citizens at nursing homes. Among the favorite songs were Chelsea Morning by Joni Mitchell, Part of the Plan by Dan Fogelberg, and My Music by Loggins and Messina. At the end of the year, Folk Club gives its final performances for the people at Van Buren. This Hootena- ny , as it was once called, or Night of Mellow Music , as it is currently known, highlights the year. , ' if EFT TO RIGHT: Stu Lerner, Scott Finchler, Bobby Meyers, Dori Solomon, Jamie abits, Nina Evans, Marla Garil, Diedre Smith, Rob Rhindress Z, 'W . ,. This year's endeavor was entitled You Can't Take It With You, a pulitzer prize win- ning comedy by Moss Hart, and George Kaufman, two of the most re- nowned Broadway comedy writers. The show is about the bizarre, but very happy Vanderhof family, and the strange goings on in their home. This production differs from all past Broadway Showcase performances in that it contains no music. The smash presentation, produced and di- rected by Mrs. Alice Gold was per- formed at Van Buren on May 12 and 13. Beeline, the school's monthly news- paper, informs the students and facul- ty ofthe activities in Van Buren. In addition, it gives the students the op- portunity to express their feelings about the school through the editorial page. The Beeline is highlighted by its many feature articles, such as Stu- dent of the Month , Sports Quiz , and On Broadway . Through the journalistic talents of the editors, re- porters, and photographers, the pa- per provides the student body with an essential service and helps strength- en school unity. BEELINE 41 Two insane yearbook editors faced each other with a look of determina- tion only found when life and death are at stake. Only one could win. Only one could become the greatest glut- ton, the most sickening slob ever born! The two contestants were Scott Finchler, Photo Editor, and Jesse Seidman, Copy Editor, thus titling this competition The Picture vs. The Word. The Eat-a-thon was designed to see who could eat the most ice cream by having each editor attempt to eat a whole Kitchen Sink at Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor. This concoc- tion consists of more than a gallon and a half of ice cream, bananas, top- ping, whipped cream, and cherries. While the Eat-a-thon was in progress and the contestants were beginning to turn green, a talk-a-thon was held between Andra Klein and Carol Man- delbaum. The object was to see who could talk the longest without stop- ping. The Eat-a-thon ended in a draw when both editors conceded, realiz- ing that a continuance of the competi- tion would result in extreme physical discomfort. Each had finished about one half of the monstrosity, leaving the rest to be consumed by the spec- tators. The talk-a-thon also ended in a tie because no winner could be named. Each competition consists of five events where the best of three sets win. Mrs. Sousa was pleased with the team's improved record, and sees promise for the team in the fu- ture. Competition consists of, as in girls' tennis, three singles mat- ches, and two doubles matches. Toughest competition has proven to be against Forest Hills and Jamacia. This season was the first for Mr. Stan Keslonsky, the Coach, who previously coached girls tennis at Jamacia High. Mr. Keslonsky antici- pates a successful coaching career at V.B. Scott Robinson makes a good get for the ball. Rob Blakely practices indoors by hitting against the gym wall. BOY'S TENNIS 65 E RE l'l0.I After seasons of frustration and near misses, the boy's swim team has finally caught the elusive brass ring of victory in P.S.A.L. B division. Under the direction of second year coach Bill Weintraub, V.B.'s mermen swam through an undefeated season, culminating with their taking the city Championship title in a meet with Jackson High School at Brooklyn Col- lege. The team, with many under- classmen returning next year, looks like it may be on the way to many more victorious seasons. Eddie Ruskowskl butterflies during practice at school. Ms. Jacobson was highly enthusiastic about the team's play this season. She believes that the team finds strength in all of its players, but most noteworthy were Lorraine Roelich, who displayed fine scoring and de- fensive abilities, and veteran senior Laurie Wilson, who has come back from a knee injury to aid the team with her fine rebounding and shoot- ing. Although the team is losing a few senior players, including Captain Lola Augostatos, Ms. Jacobson is confi- dent that next year's team will be strong due to the excellence of return- ing players Sonia Augostatos, Lucy Scaccionce, Suzanne Guy, and Cynthia Cividanes. GIRLS' BASKETBALL 69 The girls on the indoor and outdoor track teams surely made tracks, run- ning their way through their P.S.A.L. matches with flying colors. The excel- lence of the girls on these two teams can be exemplified by the Senior Class President, Yvonne Joyce, of the outdoor team, who holds the city record for the long jump - 18' 6 M . Limbering up before practice our girls track team prepares for an important meet. Harriet Miller makes a good finish for Van Buren during a meet. Venessa Klenner crosses the finish line in first place achieving another victory for Van Buren. Co-Captains Walter Smith and Nathaniel Ody led this year's Cross Country squad into its eighth con- secutive P.S.A.L. championship race, topping all Queens schools in this achievement. Although the team did not match last year's second place finish in the city championship, this year's tenth place spot was a fine achievement since the only returning member other than the captains was Senior Bruce Walsh. Van Buren has always had a fine team, and has been the only team in Queens to be able to stay in the A division of the P.S.A.L. - the toughest - for eight consecutive years, a feat the entire team, and twelve year coach Mr. Capelli can be proud of. Many team members had outstanding individual achievements this season, and most prominent were those of the two captains. Walter Smith won the Queens indoor mile championship, and Nathaniel Ody was a medal winner in the Queens indoor 600 yard championship. 5 t - , L Billy Halloran proved to be a valuable asset to the team. X This year's Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team, under the direction of Coach Kate Raynor, and Captains Ingrid Hartcorn and Sharon Kresh, com- pleted a 4-4 season against such competition as Bayside, Cardozo, Francis Lewis, and Bowne High Schools. At the beginning of the season, the entire team was highly optimistic. Yet there was still some anxiety present because it had been moved into a new division, meaning that it would be playing teams it had never played before. Also, the team was made up mostly of new and inexperienced players, with few veteran players to draw strength from. Because of these factors, the team's results didn't match the play- ers' efforts. The team has high hopes for next season and with more experi- ence, it may make the city champion- ships. f l 1 5 Sharon Kresh about to fail opponents' chance to score. In addition to placing in the city's team finals four con- secutive years in a row, team members have achieved considerable success in the city's individual finals as well. This year, the team, under the supervision of Mr. Norman Abramowitz, has confi- dence that returning gymnasts, such as city individual competitors Karen Georges and Ann Schlosses, will help the team to continue its winning streak. OSTRIN, Principal June 1978 Graduation from high school is another milestone in your life. lt is a time when all of you must begin to make decisions that will affect the very fabric of the kind of life you will lead in the future. Your teachers have attempted to impart to you not only the formal knowledge that will serve you as the basis of your needs for either a college education or the vocational goals that you seek to pursue, but we have tried to reinforce many of the values that your parents wish to instill in you also. lt is important that you leave our school not only as an educated being but also as a person who is a responsible, thoughtful individual, capable of bearing the burdens and fustrations of freedom, and one who is able to handle the privileges of adulthood. As you leave the secure confines of Martin Van Buren High School, you will soon be faced with many problems and issues that will challenge your intelligence, stamina and even your courage. We are confident that every one of you has the ability to face the tasks that lie ahead with fortitude, determination, and an increased sense of maturity. Within the framework of your daily lives, we hope that you learn to cherish the respect of your parents, family and friends and extend to them the tolerance, understanding and patience that you expect from them. THE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION OF MARTIN VAN BUREN HIGH SCHOOL Extends Hearty Congratulations To The Graduating Class of '78 Murray I. Ostrin, Principal Patrick A. Servillo, President Sandria Brito, 7st Vice-President Anna Spatola, 2nd Vice-President Ruth Leimgruber, 3rd Vice-President Vars Seraydarian, Treasurer Patricia Evans, Recording Secretary Kay Moy, Corresponding Secretary Faye Perrone, Historian ADVERTISEMENTS 173 Get smart. The Army paid most of my way through school, and it'II do the same for youZ' When I got out of high school, col- lege was a lot cheaper than it is today. But I still couIdn't afford to pay my way through it. What I did then, you can do now. I joined the Army and got all the educa- tion I wanted - at a price I wanted. Because the Army pays up to 75M of your tuition and fees for approved courses. I know lots of people that have got- ten B.A.'s at the Army's expense, and you don't have to stop there. You can stay in school as long as you stay in the Army. That's because the Army wants you to be educated. The bright- er you are, the better soldier you make. Now, with Project AHEAD jArmy Help for Education And Developmentj, you can start college and the Army on the same day. Wish they had that back when I was a stu- dent. Call IVle. Army Sgt. Carl A.
