- In the span of three and a half years the Van Buren Student is exposed to world geography, world history, american history, and economics. Students who find their basic leaning in the field of Social Studies may elect such courses as Problems of Democracy, Leadership Training, Advanced European History, and Government 9. The Social Studies Department also sponsors many extra- curricular activities, including the History Honor Society, Great Issues Forum, Peace Corps Club, Human Relations Club, Annex Debating Club, and the history magazine, Retrospect, which was initiated this year. This term the depart- ment established a team teaching program, and the method of teaching history chronologically is also being tried. A new curriculum has been approved, and is in use for General Diploma classes in american history and economics. NIR. EDWARD KELSO Chairman ff'

We post-war babies, seeking parttime or summer employment, have found that unless one knows certain basic skills, iob openings are scarce. The aim of the Secretarial Studies Department, chaired by Mrs. Dorothy Gasman, is to provide students with adequate training in vocational fields. lf a student intends to enter the business world after high school, be it as a clerk, receptionist or secretary, the courses offered by the Department in typing and stenography are invaluable. lt he intends to pursue his education in college, these same courses will facilitate note-taking and will serve to his great advan- tage in shortening the time required for typing term papers. .lust think: you can go to sleep before three A.M. the night before the papers are due. ls, Our essential purpose in the Speech Department is to draw out the individuality of the stu- dent, to make each child aware of himself so that he can better function in daily life. We are not here to create Sarah Bernhardts or Marlon Brandos. This statement by Mrs. Desser, Speech Department chairman, best sums up its manifold purposes. The courses offered by this department include Speech 8xH, Public Speaking, Dramatic Workshop, Speech Nine, and Radio and T.V. Workshop for maior credit, and Productions for half-maior credit. A feature of senior life in Van Buren is the Senior Show, directed by Mr. Steven Silverman. This year's show, a western version of Goldsmith's comedy She Stoops to Conquer was received very favorably and met with some success with its musical additions. Among the other activities sponsored by the department was the presentation of The Seed- ling by Ernest Kinoy for the Brotherhood Councill of Eastern Queens at J.H.S. 172. 1 l S EEC if X , W, -- X, gm y S , t vw .- 4 ' ,rut rf' rv' V, 2 Q 'I T lVl,l,l' T A 4: nf is nf A ,X iii .
