Q MR. EDWARD EVERARD Chairman BUYS ln an effort to build the minds and bodies of the students, the Boys' Health Education department has adopted an extensive curriculum. Included is a wide variety of activities and testing. A nationwide physical fitness test consisting of tour indoor and two outdoor tests is administered during the spring term. In the fall months, a citywide P.S'.A.L. test is given, consisting of four indoor events. ln addition, testing on the appara- tus in the gymnasium is a feature of every term. The apparatus involved includes the horizontal bar, parallel bars, side horse, mats and ropes. Basketball, touch football, handball and softball tournaments are organized in most gym classes. The emphasis here is placed upon learning and enioyment, rather than simply competition. Department chairman Mr. Edward Evarard and his colleagues are constantly guiding students to mental and physical maturity.

Especially geared to potential teachers, nurses, and social workers, home economics courses teach any girl to cope with the world about her with grace and intelligence. Although small, the department plays an important role in school life. lt annually calls upon the genius of its students to create costumes for one senior show. It offers the Home- makers of Tomorrow scholarships through the Betty Crocker Foundation. In the words of Mrs. Ethel Purnell, Chairman of the Home Economics Depart- ment, who takes great pride in her food preparations laboratory, The girls learn why certain reactions take place. ll EDUCAT UN GlRlS The Girls' Health Education Department is interested in giving girls as much vigorous activity as possible and acquainting them with a variety of sports and dance experiences. Developing self-discipline, responsibility are other major goals. The curriculum includes intramural tournaments in speedball, volley- ball and softball. As a result of last year's experiments in apparatus work, a more extensive unit in it was conducted this year. By exposing girls to such a varied program, they can achieve a reasonable amount of skill and continue to enioy several activities throughout adult life. The department offers many extra-curricular clubs for girls desirous of improv- ing their skills. Among these are hockey, basketball, bowling, tennis, and softball.
