MR. BERNARD BERNSTEIN Chairman Today's aim in the teaching of modern language is to achieve some mode of communication among peoples. Students must learn to listen to speakers, compre- hend ideas, and express themselves orally, as well as be able to read and coniugate verbs. ln order to facilitate this new emphasis in education, the Lan- guage Department would like to place a tape recorder or a record player or both in each classroom, in order to augment the equipment offered for study in the language lab. Van Buren's Language Department instructs students in an amazing number of languages, including French, Russian, Spanish, Latin, Italian, and German. ln addition the Department sponsors the French Club, the Spanish Club, and the German Club. i K . . 5- 1 fl , ,K l fix, fl ,H ,X ,. , ,. , ,. .,. , ,:gL,,L' ,-' . ff ,417 , rl JI -' li f',,x ,H .. NIRS. ETHEL PURNELL Chairman llllll ElIllNlllVl US Girls, take note! Van Buren's Home Economics Department not only trains you for future family life, it helps you thrive in the present. Especially geared to potential teachers, nurses, and social workers, home economics courses teach any girl to cope with the world about her with grace and intelligence. Although small, the department plays an important role in school life. lt annually calls upon the genius of its students to create costumes for one senior show. It offers the Home- makers of Tomorrow scholarships through the Betty Crocker Foundation. In the words of Mrs. Ethel Purnell, Chairman of the Home Economics Depart- ment, who takes great pride in her food preparations laboratory, The girls learn why certain reactions take place. And best of all, they get to eat their reactions, rather than pour them down the drain. N? Lf' ft'-,f-5 L X51 C' '. ' Q. f ,ff K ,egj'f'-WM 27 , ' xfgyxgifg' -lsr 4 ,F 5 xt LA sy X 1 .. , 'R i X s .
