HERBERT NESTLER Chairman An awareness of the world about him as well as new knowledge of himself are two aims in teaching biology to the high school student, and Van Buren's Biology Department makes every effort to assure their fulfillment. ln the pupil's Sophomore year he is first introduced to modern lab equipment, he performs his first experiments, and so he learns the magic feeling of discovery and satisfaction in accurate results. For the biology honors students proiects classes were set up and extra experiments and field trips created to stimulate their fertile minds. In their Senior year students could apply for the highly desirable college- level course. To all those who were working on biology projects the lab was open and the advice of the lab supervisors ready. As a result of this co-operative spirit Van Buren has often been a district or borough winner in the city-wide competi- tions, and talented biology students have received awards from the F.S.A. as well. ll ,yy-,, if I I! MR. JOSEPH CASCIO Chairman .5 Freedom to create and discipline in creating are both inherent in the instruc- tion of courses offered by the Art Department. Studying Commercial Art, and Fashion design follows certain standards, and the student is not as free as he would be were he pursuing a course in Painting and Composition, where among other proiects is work with Iinoleum blocks and printing. ln the courses in the department's curriculum o learning artist also is given the opportunity to develop satisfying skills and hobbies. Bulletin posters, Senior Show scenery, and class displays are all efforts of the Art Department to brightening up the usually plain halls of the school. Student art work always on display lends a note of interest to passers and errand-runners through the corridors. fs.. -if f .Q
