-i - Spirited cheering doesn't iust happen-Van Buren's Cheer- leaders work hard to make it that way. Practice begins as early as 7.00 in the morning, and the girls have an academic standard to adhere to as well as one of performance, since to qualify for the squad they must have a seventy-five per- cent average as well as a clear character record. In addition to lending encouragement to our basketball team at home and away, the Cheerleaders led our top scholars on during the taping of our participation on lt's Academic last Fall. First operating under the counsel of Mrs. Misard, the group now works with Miss Robbins. Senior members of the squad were Captain Jeri Wellman, Jayne Blumenstock, Lynn Berin, Ronnie Lawrence, Ellen Finkelstein.

- 4 Bll llNG Meeting every Wednesday, between 2.30 and 4.30, at Utopia Lanes, a group of about 30 girls took over the alleys for some bowling practice. Known as the Early Session Bowling Club, the girls were members of one of the many extra-curricular activity organizations sponsored by the Physical Edu- cation Department. Comprised of Leaders and ardent bowlers, the Club sought to develop the best in sportsmanship and playing ability in each girl. Trophies were awarded to the girl having the highest bowling aver- age and to the girl with the single highest score of the year. The girls in the Field Hockey Club, under the direction of Miss Rizzitiello, were given the opportunity this year to engage in a very exciting sport which is not included in the curriculum of the Girls' Health Education Department, be- cause ofthe great skill required to play and the difficulty the teachers would face in teaching it. A highlight of this season was the viewing of the game between the teams from England and Scotland at Hunter College. This annual rivalry was part of the International Tournament of Field Hockey in which more than thirty-seven countries par- ticipated.
