T- ' BASKET All Madison Square Garden is the elusive goal of each New York City Public High School, as the first and second teams in each P.S.A.L. division are eligible to play there. This year, our basketball team waged a tremendous battle to reach the Garden. Though lacking height, rookie coach Mr. Marvin Kessler's team was long on spirit and speed. Finally eclipsed by Adams, Jamaica, and Lane, the V-Bee Hoop- sters still proved a pleasant divisional surprise. The basketball schedule included three non- league games and twelve league battles. Van Buren started non-league rivalries with Francis Lewis and Forest Hills. Mr. Kessler, of course, was satisfied with his team's showing. He had regarded Van Buren as strictly a long shot for division leadership at the beginning of the season, but the Hoopsters were in the battle throughout. ln addition to building men, a goal of any athletic group, it appears that Mr. Kessler built some very good basketball players.

-i - Spirited cheering doesn't iust happen-Van Buren's Cheer- leaders work hard to make it that way. Practice begins as early as 7.00 in the morning, and the girls have an academic standard to adhere to as well as one of performance, since to qualify for the squad they must have a seventy-five per- cent average as well as a clear character record. In addition to lending encouragement to our basketball team at home and away, the Cheerleaders led our top scholars on during the taping of our participation on lt's Academic last Fall. First operating under the counsel of Mrs. Misard, the group now works with Miss Robbins. Senior members of the squad were Captain Jeri Wellman, Jayne Blumenstock, Lynn Berin, Ronnie Lawrence, Ellen Finkelstein.
