NIIIPAL Your high school career at Van Buren covered the span of the late President John F. Kennedy's administration. During this period of time, while you were developing as a sophomore, growing as a junior, and maturing into a senior, he was es- tablishing himself as the vigorous, idealistic, and firm leader of our nation. When the startling news of his sudden death was announced, you were in the midst of attending classes. It is a day you will always remember. As a student in high school, you thus had an oppor- tunity to be a student of the climactic sweep of history. Your own youthful development was inextricably intertwined with the career of our youthful president. When he proclaimed the following declaration in his Inaugural Address, he was also speaking for you: tLet the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage -- and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed...U Much thought has been given to the type of monument that would best immortalize his contributions. There can be no more lasting tribute than your own devotion to the cause which he so eloquently expressed. By a coincidence, the theme of the current World's Fair, NPeace through Understanding,H blends perfectly with his credo. Yours is now the opportunity to grasp the torch, and light the way. In the words of John Masefield, the Poet Laureate of England, HGrant to us life that though the man be gone The promise of his spirit be fulfilled.H With best wishes, vu, BQLV6-JL Maurice Bleifeld Principal
