BOYS' LEADERS The Boys' Leaders, under the auspices of Mr. Edward Everard, Chairman of the Boys' Health Education Department, have participated in a vigorous year of tumbling, and working on the parallel bars, the horizontal bar, the trampoline, and the horse. The members of this select group are chosen individually by their Health Education teachers after having demonstrated exceptional ability in this field. Membership in this organization extends through their high school career, and is indicated by the wearing of red shirts, rather than blue. The commendable service of the Leaders can be witnessed during the gym class, where they demonstrate activities, and aid the class members in their attempts. As a unit, the Boys' Leaders do not participate in any extracurricular activities, but through the P.S.A.L. they hope to organize a gymnastic team which will enter com- petitions. nil -n-vu: ua--an Qian: 11:11 11111

GOLF The past few years have seen golf blossom into perhaps the fastest growing sport in America. The temptation of the long fairways, the lure of the short ones, the chal- lenge of the traps, and the opportunity to let loose and get away from it all, have all proven irresistible to American men and women alike. Not being the type to buck the, trend, Van Burenites have plunged wholeheartedly into the sport. Last year, the golf team's victories were highlighted by a unanimous romp over Forest Hills High School in which four of the five members of the Van Buren team broke forty for nine holes. This year, Mr. Roman and his crew will once again take to the fairways of Clearview Golf Course. The return of three of last year's starters, led by Gene Marrotte, promises to give Van Buren a more successful season than last. Under the supervision of its skillful coach, the golf team is sure to make these Predictions come true. TENNIS CLUB Miss Theresa Rizzitiello, the faculty advisor, has had a Tennis Club for every year of the four she has been at Van Buren. The club, consisting of thirty- five members in the Fall and fifty to sixty members in the Spring, meets twice a week to learn all the techniques. Special equipment which assists in the development of skill are: stroke developers, rebound nets, Ball-Boy machines, and similar equipment. The club participates in the yearly city tournaments, sponsored by Hunter College, which was held last year at Newton High School. Students have and will continue to receive basic instructions as well as advanced techniques and competitive training. x

Every Spring, the sophomores of the girls' gym classes are invited to ioin the Leaders-in-Training Club. This is their first step in becoming a Leader. At the end of this time, the more physically proficient are chosen to become Leaders-in-Training. This is the second step. The L.l.T.'s serve a five-month training period, and then the lucky girls are finally chosen to be Leaders. All this is done under the guiding hand of Miss Theresa Rizzitiello, the Leaders' faculty adviser. At present, there are approximately fifty Senior Leaders. These girls represent the most physically fit in Van Buren. To support this title, the Leaders have been asked to give demonstrations before conferences. At present, they are one of the six experimental stations set up to try working with the parallel, uneven parallel bars, chinning bars, and other such equipment being used for the first time in New York City. ln addition to her own gym class, each Leader has an assist period. Contrary to popular opinion, the Leaders are not all brawn and no brain, quite a few retain membership in Arista and other honor organizations. There is a social aspect to Leaders as well. There are inductions, playdays with other schools, playdays with Girls' League, bowling parties, all of which are culmi- nated in the Mother-Daughter Dinner. Of course, such an organization could not be efficiently run without great planning by its officers. Outgoing President and Vice- President, Anne Rubino and Laurie Margolies have done an excellent iob. ...E V ' I X YYWWY- ,-,.,..,, ...... Y , Y W GIRLS LEADERS
