He is given a chance to cultivate worthwhile hobbies or to prepare for a career in the field of his choice. There are many activities within the school in which the Department plays a part. Senior Show scenery, bulletin posters, and attractive dis- plays are among those to be mentioned. The ever changing display of student art work adds a bright note to our corridors. ce? e ge -8 -fm MR. JOSEPH CASCIO Chairman ,lf 55 MR. HERBERT NESTLER Chairman BIOLOGY The teachers of the Biology Department at Van Buren are busy intro- ducing new students each and every year into the mysterious wonders of this world of ours. To guide them, they have a three-fold purpose to fulfill: first, to help the student to a better understanding of the function- ings of plants and animals in our environment, second, to help them gain a better understanding of our own bodily functions, and third, to help pupils understand the methods of science, as they are used in problem solving and development of scientific thinking. Students with a special interest in Biology may ioin the Van Buren Biology Club, where discussions about individual hobbies, as well as biology in general, form a maior portion of club activity. , a 4 Jar '..-ali' f- I 5 f tl -..,.- -1- r ENGl.lS The English Department offers wide-ranging, diversified courses tailored to fit the needs of all our students. In addition to regular English classes, the Department conducts honor classes at each grade level, plus C1 number of electives-Journalism, Creative Writing, Great Ideas, and Shakespeare -which may be taken in lieu of regular or honor English. ln the near future, other electives, centered around poetry, the short story, and the novel will be offered. Two electives that may be chosen in addition to English 8 are English 9H, an advanced placement course, and English 9. English 9H is open to recommended seniors of exceptional ability, English 9 is open to all seniors who wish to improve their composition skills. Not all of the English Department's activities take place in classrooms. In addition to sponsoring publications, the English Department and its members sponsor other extra-curricular activities: The Lively Arts Club, The Future Teachers Club, and The Open Road Club. The Department has sponsored assembly programs, and has launched a series of poetry and drama readings. One of the outcomes of the readings has been the forma- tion ofa Poetry Club. P 3 , FOREIGN LANGUAGES The Language Department, led by the recently-returned Mr. Bernstein, has expanded greatly during our stay at Van Buren. Presently offered are French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish-one of the largest selections in the city. This year saw German ioin French and Spanish in offering a fourth year. The language laboratory on the third floor, another recent addition, boasts the latest sound and recording equipment, which has proved extremely effective in conversation and oral comprehension. This has been supplemented by the use of tape recorders in the classrooms, mainly for Regent's preparation. In addition to the actual speaking, these language courses offer the student a deeper insight into the people and culture of foreign lands. Due to the efforts of the language depart- ment, graduation day will see students bidding a long-awaited, but some- what sad, farewell to Martin Van Buren in six languages otherth an English. 5 I I ,EEZ N cl if A? 'N .fx HEALTH EDUCATION-BOYS The boys' health education department has been very active this year in complying with President Kennedy's proposals for physical fitness. The boys have been led through a series of tests calculated to show their strength and endurance. These activities consisted of a 600 yard run, a 50 yard sprint, stunts on the parallel bars and the trampoline, and let's not forget those push-ups, sit-ups, and squatthrusts! Another part of the curriculum included the volleyball and softball tournaments during which each class was given the opportunity to show its skill and prowess in these sports. A big event during the spring term of '63 was the Sports-Dance Nite on March 29, during which all the male teachers in the school were L...- fi. QQ, MR. K HEALTH EDUCATION-GIRLS MISS ANNE WICKMAN Chairman The biggest innovation this year has been an experimental program in apparatus activities for girls. Van Buren is one of five New York City schools selected for this study. The Leaders have led the way on parallel bars, horse, high and low bar, balance beam and the uneven parallels. Regular classes have all participated in this new experience with great enthusiasm ...and a few aching muscles. ln extra-curricular offerings, the Leaders-ln-Training, tennis and bowling clubs have been oversubscribed with two clubs each to accommodate the large registration. It is gratifying to know that so many girls avail them- selves of the pleasurable opportunity to participate in an organized sports program before or after school sessions. l I HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics Department offers a wide range of courses to meet the needs of every student. These include Food Preparation, Nutrition, Clothing, Home Nursing, Family Living and Child Development. These courses are designed to help the student understand her present role as a family member, relationships with others and to prepare for the future family which she will help to establish. Although girls only are enrolled in these courses, it is hoped that boys will be scheduled for them as well, for they too are family members and look forward to sharing their responsibilities of home and family living in their futures. There are special honor courses offered to girls who plan to maior in Home Economics at college and enter a wide range of highly paid and interesting iob opportunities in the eight maior fields of this course of study. Girls who plan to be social workers, nurses, early childhood specialists all find these courses excellent preparation for their future careers as well as the biggest career of all, that of homemaker in her own family. MORTON PERLMAN Chairman INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Arts, as a school subiect, is a broad study of the materials, tools, machines, construction processes, organization, products and some of the human problems of industry with which all pupils should be acquainted. It is developed through pupil planning and constructing of proiects, discussion, observation and readings related to industry. Students taking courses in this department of M.V.B. may take any one or more of the following subiectsz Mechanical or Technical Drafting, Woodworking, Metalworking, Crafts, Transportation, Graphic Arts or Electricity. These subiects may be taken as either maior or minor credit subiects. In addition, selected Sophomores may take one year of lndus- trial Arts Science-Proiects Shop. 51 I --'W NYT I LIBRARY ln the school library all books and other materials are selected not only to provide enrichment for every subiect of the school curriculum, but also to encourage leisure time reading. A wide variety of magazines is also available. Every student is taken by the English teacher to the library during his entering term for an orientation lesson. The librarians explain the rules and procedures. All students are also taught a lesson on research techniques in the social studies classrooms by the librarians. Whenever the need for any detailed library information arises, the class goes with the teacher to the library for a lesson on this special area of knowledge. ' f r their reading and Students are urged school assignments. ln each subiect area, bibliographies are compiled for teachers. These bibliographies and other special lists are available to students for their special reading proiects. What- ever one's plans for the future may be, some phase of high school mathematics will be useful. lf one is preparing for a field which is directly related to mathematics, or which is scientific or technological, then he wants to take all the mathematics that his program permits. Most colleges require a minimum of two to three years of high school mathematics for admission. ln any event, the study of mathematics in high school helps to produce well-informed, intelligent citizens. For several years now, the mathematics department has offered a variety of enriched courses for students gifted in mathematics. Aside from honor courses in the tenth and eleventh year mathematics, we have been offering a twelfth year course dealing with an assortment of topics in modern algebra, geometry, and analysis. For a select group of senior students, we also offer a college level course in analytic geometry and calculus, for which students may receive advanced placement in college. By way of extra-curricular activities, we have continuously maintained a mathematics team which has repeatedly distinguished itself in city-wide contests and national competition. ln designing its courses of study, the mathematics department has focused upon scientific application of the subiect as well as upon the development of pure mathematical theory. 4 N 'n ,,.,..----. MUSI The Music Department has two main obiectives. The first is to culti- vate a taste for the enioyment of good music. The second is to offer every student in Van Buren cn worthwhile musical experience. Required music cycles offer the average student singing, listening, rhythm, playing, note reading, and creative experiences. The bands, orchestras, and choruses offer the musically-gifted student an opportunity to further develop performance ability and to participate in maior community concerts and school performances. The more talented students may study music intensively in the major music theory course, where they study Theory, Harmony, Counterpoint, Orchestration and Composition. JR? W...- fl M. V 4.2, 1 PHYSICAL SCIENCE Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Castka, the science department has provided Van Burenites with a better understanding of the world around them. A special advancement program for seniors offers courses such as advanced physics and advanced chemistry. ln addition, special atten- tion is given students desiring to enter the Future Scientists of America program. The success of this is evidenced in the fact that Van Buren recently had more honorable mentions in this competition than any other school in the country. This is indicative of the fine teaching of our science department. It is encouraging to think that these scientists of the future have been molded by such capable minds. CVR 4 W' W if ul S4 A .1 X ... SECRETARIAL STUDIES The chief purpose of the Secretarial Studies department is vocational. Commercial, Academic, and General course students are trained accord- ing to their interests and ability to fill successfully the many types of positions to be found in the secretarial departments of modern offices. These include, to mention a few, stenographer, secretary, typist, recep- tionist, clerk, and file clerk. Academic students, who are going on to college, find the courses especially designed for them particularly useful. These accelerated courses are offered to enable the Academic student to type his reports quickly and attractively, and to take notes on lectures and readings efficiently. These skills have an additional advantage in that they enable the college student who so desires to obtain well-paying and more desirable part- time and summer employment during his college years. EDWARD KELSO Chairman S OCIAL STUDIES The requirement that every high school student take three and one-half years of instruction in Social Studies and the provision for elective courses recognize that, however diverse the vocational paths which pupils will follow in the future, all will be citizens and voters, ultimately responsible for the decisions in local, national and foreign affairs that must be made in our American democracy Accordin I . gy, classes in social studies strive to develop intelligent citizenship based o n a sound understanding of significant historical moveme t n s at home and abroad. They also aim to foster in pupils interest and abilit t y o deal critically with the significant issues confronting our world today A final b ' . asic obiective of courses in social studies is the develo ' pment in future citizens of a zeal in promoting social justice for all. X2 Z pf. ...., - I SPEECH The Speech department at Martin Van Buren High School, headed by Mrs. Mary Desser, offers a course in fundamentals of speaking, labeled Speech, which is taken in either the fourth or fifth term. All students . H must take Speech in place of one term of English. Those who qualy may elect one of the specialized courses given in Dramatic Workshop, Public Speaking or Radio and Television. A student qualifies for one of these electives by receiving at least 859k in English and the recommenda- tion of the English teacher. ln addition, there is a half-maior course given in Theatre Production. This term, too, the Speech depart ourse Speech 9-a course in oral interpretation of literature. C I ln addition, the Speech department presented The Boy Friend, a musical comedy. The reception was most gratifying. Other activities of . ,, U . the department included a presentation of the play, The nerring lnstinct by Thornton Wilder to the Brotherhood Council of Eastern s at Junior High School 172 Trips to Broadway to see plays such Queen . as Man For All Seasons and Brecht on Brecht have been arranged. to Hofstra to see Midsummer Night's Dream. ment introduced a new half-mayor Other trips included one MRS. The first solution, triple sessions, was tem- porarily successful, but as the enrollment topped 5,000, it became evident that a new remedy was required. This was found in P.S. 95 in Jamaica, better known to us as the Annex. Students were admitted for the first time in September 1961, and since that time the Annex has grown into a miniature high school. A full program of academic subjects is offered. ln addition to honor classes, help classes and clubs, the students publish a combination newspaper and literary magazine four times a year. Pupils are permitted to ioin the G.O. and elect their own G.O. Officers, which truly attest to the high school atmosphere existing in our Annex. . The credit for this must go to Mr. Shannon, the team coach since the school opened in 1955. This year, however, Mr. Shannon has announced his plans to retire after an illustrative and successful forty-year career of teaching. lt was unfortunate that the team could not present him with a chance at the Garden and the championship, but the mere fact that the team displayed such sportsmanship and effort was enough to satisfy the veteran coach. The cause for the setbacks suffered can be attributed to the many hardships that befell the team. Paul Clegg, the star of the team, missed four games during the height of the season due to a foot iniury. Then, due to an unfortunate occurrence during a game with Adams, Van Buren was forced to forfeit one game. There were bright spots, though, such as the victory over our natural rival, Jamaica High. In addition, the fine performance against Far Rockaway by many of the team's iuniors as well as Clegg and the varsity, has spurred speculation that next year's team under the direction of Mr. Kessler, will enioy a successful season. Jamaica Lane 'I962-63 season 45 Van Buren 62 Richmond Hill 57 Far Rockaway 62 Jackson 45 Wilson 56 Jamaica 47 Lane 52 Far Rockaway 37 Jackson 60 Richmond Hill 44 Wilson 65 BASEBALL The crack of the bat and the touch of Spring in the air reminds us that the baseball season is once again here. Baseball has always been one of Van Buren's strong points in sports, and this year will be no exception, according to the coach, Mr. Welson. After winning the division championship last year, Van Buren went on to place second in Queens. Because so many of last year's stars are still wiith the team this year, prospects for victory look exceedingly good. In addition, a fine crop of rookies will be adding strength to the team both offensively and defensively. Under the fine direction of Mr. Welson, there is little doubt that this year's baseball team will attain new and greater successes than ever before. 3. 95111 vllfl RIFLE Van Buren's marksmen have done it again! After placing first in Queens last year, the rifle team, sparked by the return of five of last season's six starters, blazed its way to another borough cham- pionship. Perhaps what makes this more amazing is that Van Buren's team is a mere four years old. The coach, Mr. Raymond Langley, is to be com- mended for having led his teams to two consecutive championships. In addition, Van Buren plays under the handicap of not having its own range and hav- ing to play on the Jamaica High School range. We doff our hats to this year's starters-co-captains Barry Seidman and Jerry Haber, John Farrell, Frank Husson, Alan Storms, Bill Zuza, and Lloyd Siegal, FENCING This year's fencing team showed signs of great improvement. Spurred on by a 9-3 victory over Brooklyn Automotive, the team went on to add many more victories to its list. The coach, Mr. Sey- mour Blond, shared in the optimism of the team after the initial victory. Led by captain Glen Davis, Steve Malinkewitz, Steve Goldberg, Ken Reiger, Roy Rauch, Eric Walters, and Ken Geller, formed a for- midable foe, making its presence known through- out the league. This team, although not enioying the following of other Van Buren sports, is sure to emerge as a favorite in the future. SOCCER Van Buren's soccer team this year enioyed what was perhaps its most successful season to date. Although it has not yet mellowed to the point where it can set its sights on a championship, the team certainly proved itself to be a tough opponent. Against Newtown, generally recognized as one of the strongest squads in the league, Van Buren man- aged to tie the game, causing Newtown to suffer through two grueling overtimes before we finally succumbed. Credit for the success of the team is equally divided between coach Meyer Diller and such stars as three year veteran and high-scorer, Alan Scholom. That the team's record was not out- standing is overshadowed by the fact that the team learned much about sportsmanship while laying the foundations for future successes. 1 i t TRACK Tl vm' lima plans..-.a The Van Buren Track Team suffered this year through two misfortunes. The coach, Mr. Elstein, suffered a mild heart attack early in the campaign, leaving the team temporarily devoid of leadership during his convalescence. However, Mr. Marvin Kessler, already burdened with the task of becom- ing basketball coach, volunteered his services as coach of the cross-country division. Assuming the position of coach of the indoor team was Mr. Meyer Diller, already serving as soccer team coach. Despite these many setbacks, cross-country stars Richard Peyser and Bennett Flax placed thirteenth and fourteenth respectively out of a field of one hundred and fifty runners in the Queens Champion- ships. The team has emerged well from an early- season slump. Driven on by the incentive to win a championship, the team would also like a success- ful season as a returning present to Coach Elstein. They no doubt will go on to bigger and better things as the season progresses. TENNIS The warm weather and gentle breezes of Spring have brought with them the sounds of the swish and the plunk as Van Buren's tennis team once again takes to the courts. Under the supervision of Mr. Wolff, the team has gone far since its initiation some years ago. Last year, the efforts of the team were somewhat thwarted, when, without warning, we were shifted to a different league. However, the successful rebound of the team later in the season, combined with the return of such fine players as David Goodwin, has aroused hope for a highly suc- cessful season this year. The bowling team has blasted through one bowl- ing alley after another, leaving behind a trail of crushed and vanquished opponents. Although this performance is typical of the Van Buren team, it is especially true this year, with the return of five vet- erans of last year's campaign. Arnold Garelick, William Zimmer, Mike Brudner, Bill Presser and Bob Lucas, along with a fine crop of newcomers swept through their non-league competition without a loss. League play saw a string of victories against Bay- side, Jackson, and Flushing come to an end under the onslaught of the Francis Lewis team. Mr. Arthur Radwin, bowling coach, praised the team, but cautiously added that competition was threatening. Unfazed, the players regained their fine form and went on to finish the season with an impressive record. 1 X 6 BOWLING CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders have an academic, as well as a performance standard to which all members and applicants must adhere. A seventy-five per cent average and a clear character record are required, and as Mrs. Purnell, the faculty advisor, remarked, the cheerleaders maintain this with ease. Sixteen to eighteen girls participate, giving performances at each basketball game, at home or away. The goals of the cheerleaders consist of the stimulation of the team and audience spirit and the elimination of cheerleading as lust a spectator sport. The appli- cants are chosen by the present members, Mrs. Pur- nell, and Miss Wickman, chairman of the Girls Health Education Department. GOLF The past few years have seen golf blossom into perhaps the fastest growing sport in America. The temptation of the long fairways, the lure of the short ones, the chal- lenge of the traps, and the opportunity to let loose and get away from it all, have all proven irresistible to American men and women alike. Not being the type to buck the, trend, Van Burenites have plunged wholeheartedly into the sport. Last year, the golf team's victories were highlighted by a unanimous romp over Forest Hills High School in which four of the five members of the Van Buren team broke forty for nine holes. This year, Mr. Roman and his crew will once again take to the fairways of Clearview Golf Course. The return of three of last year's starters, led by Gene Marrotte, promises to give Van Buren a more successful season than last. Under the supervision of its skillful coach, the golf team is sure to make these Predictions come true. TENNIS CLUB Miss Theresa Rizzitiello, the faculty advisor, has had a Tennis Club for every year of the four she has been at Van Buren. The club, consisting of thirty- five members in the Fall and fifty to sixty members in the Spring, meets twice a week to learn all the techniques. Special equipment which assists in the development of skill are: stroke developers, rebound nets, Ball-Boy machines, and similar equipment. The club participates in the yearly city tournaments, sponsored by Hunter College, which was held last year at Newton High School. Students have and will continue to receive basic instructions as well as advanced techniques and competitive training. x BOYS' LEADERS The Boys' Leaders, under the auspices of Mr. Edward Everard, Chairman of the Boys' Health Education Department, have participated in a vigorous year of tumbling, and working on the parallel bars, the horizontal bar, the trampoline, and the horse. The members of this select group are chosen individually by their Health Education teachers after having demonstrated exceptional ability in this field. Membership in this organization extends through their high school career, and is indicated by the wearing of red shirts, rather than blue. The commendable service of the Leaders can be witnessed during the gym class, where they demonstrate activities, and aid the class members in their attempts. As a unit, the Boys' Leaders do not participate in any extracurricular activities, but through the P.S.A.L. they hope to organize a gymnastic team which will enter com- petitions. nil -n-vu: ua--an Qian: 11:11 11111 Every Spring, the sophomores of the girls' gym classes are invited to ioin the Leaders-in-Training Club. This is their first step in becoming a Leader. At the end of this time, the more physically proficient are chosen to become Leaders-in-Training. This is the second step. The L.l.T.'s serve a five-month training period, and then the lucky girls are finally chosen to be Leaders. All this is done under the guiding hand of Miss Theresa Rizzitiello, the Leaders' faculty adviser. At present, there are approximately fifty Senior Leaders. These girls represent the most physically fit in Van Buren. To support this title, the Leaders have been asked to give demonstrations before conferences. At present, they are one of the six experimental stations set up to try working with the parallel, uneven parallel bars, chinning bars, and other such equipment being used for the first time in New York City. ln addition to her own gym class, each Leader has an assist period. Contrary to popular opinion, the Leaders are not all brawn and no brain, quite a few retain membership in Arista and other honor organizations. There is a social aspect to Leaders as well. There are inductions, playdays with other schools, playdays with Girls' League, bowling parties, all of which are culmi- nated in the Mother-Daughter Dinner. Of course, such an organization could not be efficiently run without great planning by its officers. Outgoing President and Vice- President, Anne Rubino and Laurie Margolies have done an excellent iob. ...E V ' I X YYWWY- ,-,.,..,, ...... Y , Y W GIRLS LEADERS BOWLING CLUB Are you a devotee of one of the fastest growing sports in America? Well, over thirty-five Van Buren seniors are. They're members of the Early Session Bowling Club, which meets every Wednesday, at the Utopia Bowling Lanes. The club, under the guidance of Miss Wetterau, aims to give every girl a good time and to improve her bowling skill. To this aim, trophies are awarded at the end of the season for Highest Average, High Series, Best Player, and Most Improved Player. The success of this method of individual competition is upheld by the terrific increase in membership. The club meets for fifteen weeks, giving each girl an opportunity to improve at her own rate. While the required meetings are only ten, most girls prefer to keep bowling for the full season. There is a bowling club for early session every term, so ioin up- you'll be glad you did. ioin one of the many invigorating sports clubs. To Every Fall, the girls of Van Buren are invited to receive great benefit from exercise, fresh air, and fun, the Field Hockey Club, under the direction of Miss Theresa Rizzitiello, invites you to ioin the swell- ing membership. After gaining proficiency in the basic fundamentals of the game, the members divide into teams and engage in a tournament. All the members of the winning team receive special P.S.A.l.. awards. Occasionally, the members are treated to displays of prowess by professionals through attending competitive meets and confer- ences, -- - -1-Z ::::::: rr! Yet students here at Van Buren know it by a different name. While traces of it are found all around the school, it is housed in a modest little office located in the basement, numbered CB56. As one enters he is confronted with a sign which reads Through these portals pass Van Buren's best. This can be taken quite seriously, since at one time or another, all of the student leaders of the school have had reason to enter this room. Have you ever been in there? The Fall term saw Jerry Haber as President, Bob Mandel as Vice- President, Joyce Nelson as Secretary, and Jerry Wakefield as Treas- urer. A new constitution was presented and ratified under this administration which also created a Season Basketball Pass, the Law and Psychology clubs, and held a free dance, A Night at the Sands. This term the officers are Harold Lynn, President, Lynn Freeman, Vice-President, Pam Brick, Secretary, and Don Zolin, Treasurer. Many exciting events are planned including a Faculty-Student Sports Nite and the annual talent show, lts advisers are Mr. l. Widaen and Mr. A. Radwin, two teachers to whom countless students owe a large debt of gratitude. Without their help very little could be accomplished. Let other schools call it what they will, in Van Buren it is known as the General Organization, your General Organization. SEMAVABU Some of the benefits of the senior year are the little rewards and pleasures that accompany it. One of these, Semavabu, superbly blends enioyment and information exclusively for those of the senior class. Although appearing only sporadically, it's publica- tion is anxiously awaited by all. Within its few pages we are treated to a touch of Van Buren's version of Walter Winchell's latest news on the prom and yearbook, as well as general interest articles. The style of writing is informal and cordial, providing a refreshing change from the commonly encountered stilted writing. Editors Janet Schwartz and Estelle Gottesman, under the direction of Mr. B. Rappaport, the senior adviser, have done an ex- cellent job in keeping with the fine tradition of the senior tabloid-Semavabu. BOYS LEAGUE l2l.7't ' This year saw the League, under the leadership of Ted Rosen undertake its own great leap forward. Indications of the radical change in policy came early in the year, when the organization in addition to expanding its services to the school, sought to emphasize its own social aspects. The year's activities began with the conducting ofa highly successful Service Placement Bureau, through which many capable students were placed in service positions with teachers. Tuesdays throughout the year, saw the League exhibiting its new face, as the traditional uniform of red sweater, white shirt, dark tie and pants were altered, with the elimination of the red sweater. During the Christmas vacation, the League members displayed their athletic abilities in a thrill- packed football game, in which the old members edged the newcomers 21-20. The league, with Dr. Feder, serving in his second year as faculty advisor, rendered service to the school at home basketball games, graduation exercises, Open School Night, the Senior Show, Game Night, and the Spring Concert. In addition, members of the League extended the scope of their services to the school with the creation of the Eraser Squad, and the formation of the League Line, a newspaper designed to keep students better informed of extra-curricular activities open to them. lnternally, the League set into practice for the first time a point system, under which all members were required to satisfy certain basic service requirements. As part of their proiect, League members visited Turkey Mountain Camp and reformed several tasks there. At the end of the Spring term, as a reward for a year of dedicated and superior service to Van Buren, the League went to a baseball game. All in all, Boys' League's activities, both internal and external for the year i962-L963, may be aptly described by the organization's motto, 'lit serves you right. I cm GIRLS' LEAGUE One of the oldest service organizations in the school, Girls' League was founded the first year that Martin Van Buren came into being. Since its humble beginnings, the League has grown and advanced to become one of the most respected service organizations in the school and one of the largest. How does one become a member of Girls' League? First a girl trains for one period a week for eight weeks, during which time the girls' training group thinks of a proiect and makes it. Then all the training groups give an assembly to show off their completed projects. Since the League is so large it is almost impossible to know the trainees individually. Therefore each trainee goes through an interview, where we try to find out about each girl individually. After all this the girls are inducted into the League. But Girls' League is not all work, service, work. There are many social events conducted within the League. Every spring the League has a play day with its rival organization Leaders. There is also a Senior Party in the spring, a trip to a show or baseball game once a term, and of course the induction. Highlighting all these events in the annual Mother-Daugh- ter dinner held every spring. This is the largest social event in the League and one of the most enioyable. One of the most coveted awards a girl can hope to win is the Girls' League key at graduation. This key represents the fact that this girl has worked the hardest during her acquaintance with Girls' League. As you can see, the girl who is a member of Girls' Service League will find it a truly rewarding and exciting experience. ARISTA SCIENCE HONOR SOCIETY The History Honor Society is comparatively new, but its activitiies make it as well known and appreciated as any of the older organizations. It is under the co-sponsor- ship of Mrs. Ida Balser and Mr. Stanley Feld. David Jacobson is the president of this group, which consists of approximately one hundred avid history students, who have maintained a ninety-one percent or better average for four terms of History in Martin Van Buren High School. This society was instrumental in presenting thought-provoking assembly programs on the Constitution, and on the United Nations. The students have conducted debates on topics of current importance and are engaged in a series of lectures. Many day trips to such sites as Hyde Park and the United Nations, plus a three day sojourn to Washington, D. C. highlight the calendar of events of the organization. This new honor society has added much to the intellectual life of Van Buren, and it promises much more for the future. -. 'SP- I' Y-3 I gi. - fe Arista, an honor society which was founded half a century ago, is comprised of four percent of the student body, personifying the very meaning of the Greek, word Arista -the best. All members excel in scholarship, character, service, cooperation and loyalty to the highest ideals of Van Buren. Arista has been led and inspired these past six years by Mrs. Eileen Boylan, with the aid of ten faculty members who are known as the Arista Senate. The Senate mem- bers actively participate in the selection of members, and sponsor activities which do not occur during the monthly Arista meetings. The meetings are primarily used for the presentation of informative lectures by various members of the faculty. They are conducted by either the Boy Leader, Steven Moskowitz, or by the Girl Leader, Marcy J. Rosen. The organization also publishes a newsletter containing any information which is pertinent to the society. There is a tutoring system, run by the Arista Secretary, Dona Schatz, by which students who are weak in any subiect can get aid from an Arista member who is strong in that field. This society lives up to its ideals, creating an atmosphere of promising intellect and character which shines throughout the school. Among the bright arrivals this year on the Martin Van Buren High School scene is the Science Honor Society, consisting of the top math and science students in the school. These students of the test tube and the slide rule meet during assembly periods to probe deeper into the realms of the seen and unseen world around them. Under the direction of Mrs. Friedenreich, many members have tackled proiects ranging from biology to physics. These are the people whose goal is success in the Westing- house Talent Search, and whose keen minds will take their place tomorrow in the world of science. . . X HISTORY HONOR SOCIETY 5x 1 :gg Sight Xl ,V a ,, s ,, MATH TEAM ,, li ., 2 5 2 5 2 Martin Van Buren High School's Math Team, which consisted of approximately thirty-five students, met the seventh period all through the year. The team was given assistance and firm direction by Mr. Sidney Cabin, mathematician extraordinaire. Both he and William Anscher, the team captain, were well pleased with the team's accomplishments for the year. The meetings were put to good use by the members, in diligently working on practice problems. This proved to be excellent preparation for the competitions in which twenty-eight other New York City High Schools, belonging to the Inter-Scholastic Mathematics League, took part. BOOSTERS USHERS l l y - l BEN FRANKLIN To foster and perpetuate the ideals of Beniamin Franklin. This is the motto of Van Buren's Ben Franklin Club. The Club's members try to live up to their motto by holding regular meetings at which additional instruction and plans for the future are discussed. The Ben Franklin Club performs a great service for the school by printing up many of the forms and papers necessary in an educational institution such as Van Buren. The officers for the Spring term of 1963 are: Douglas Abbes, President, Gerald Nacheman, Vice- President, Terry Nahlik, Secretary, Hayro Ayvazyan, Treasurer, and Sheldon Forman, Historian. ln April of this year the Ben Franklin Club took a trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. This trip helped all the members to gain a better under- standing of the life and work of Beniamin Franklin. l. X JR. RED CROSS Mrs. Wirth, the faculty advisor of the Junior Red Cross in Martin Van Buren, explained there are two general fund raising periods, one is the Christmas- New Year Season and the other is in March, which is designated as Red Cross Month. The thirty-five members of the Red Cross Club, besides their other activities, such as making articles for hospitals, decorating the hospitals for special events, and becoming general volunteers, have be- gun work on a scrapbook which is to be sent to a sister school in Japan. Red Cross service is not confined to winter activi- ties. Its extensive summer program includes hospital, playground and blood bank work. The representa- tives, of which Martin Van Buren has four, to the City Red Cross Council participate in these programs as well as special ones such as presenting plays to be given at different hospitals. ln Martin Van Buren High School, the senior year is always a happy musical one. From the tuneful groans of those who are preparing for the final examination of their music cycle, to the memorable performances of the white-sweatered and emblemued Senior Chorus and Senior Orchestra and Band, music is strongly influential in our school life. lt is consistently developing new facets in our school. Establishing a precedent, this year's Senior Show is under the co-operative direction of the Music Department and the Speech Department. There are now two theory classes as well as two new teachers, Miss Faye Levine and Mr. Irene. Van Buren has sent performing groups to the Annex, various other high schools, and to the Bell Park Jewish Center to entertain our community's senior citizens. Many Van Buren students have been inspired by professional musical presentations which they attended through the assist- ance of the Music Department. Yet these many activities did not dim the traditional highlights of the musical calendar -the festive Christmas program or the ioyful welcome to the season, the Spring Concert. Over six hundred students in the Senior Chorus, Junior Chorus, Girls' Chorus, Orchestra and Band played a part in these shows. They were overwhelming successes that garnered the delighted support of the entire school. If there was a song in our heart during the senior year, the music department and the music students of Van Buren did much to put it there. F-7 4' , Wf.. Each homeroom sends a senior delegate to the meetings. This delegate has the responsibility of distributing any information concerning seniors to their class. The Council is under the supervision of Mr. Rappaport. This year it has achieved great heights with the Senior Prom and the Senior Show. QW I S J' S is X S 5 53 15,5 R The Seniors of Martin Van Buren High School are excitedly anticipating one of the maior events cul- minating the high school career. This is the i963 Senior Prom. This year the prom will be a new ex- perience for Martin Van Buren seniors. lt is to be held at the Monaco Beach Club, Lido Beach. When the students arrive they will find a sump- tuous smorgasbord arranged. When they are not partaking of the delicious food, the guests will whirl merrily around the floor to the strains of beau- tiful music, emanating from the instruments of an accomplished band. At midnight a snack will be served, and at three the weary merry-makers will leave for home, content in the knowledge that on the morrow they may return to the Club and relax in the cool water or rest in the sun. ..---.,- X SENIOR SHOW This year's senior class extravaganza was not the usual song-and-skit routine. Gifted actors, singers, and dancers of the class of '63 pooled their talents in a hilari- ous, fun-filled spoof of the Roaring Twenties, The Boy Friend. Starring Margery Sternberg as Polly Browne, and Harold Sadowsky as her newly discovered beau, The Boy Friend frolicked through two nights of song and laughter on March 8 and 9. Diane Winters headed the crew of costume designers and seamstresses, supervised by Mrs. Ethel Purnell. The result of their hard work was a riot of bowed, striped, and ruffled shift dresses, suitable for the whirling, bouncy Charleston in the lively dance number, The Riviera, choreographed by Lorraine Lipman. Against a background of beautiful scenery and stage craft prepared by Mrs. Lorraine Lipari, the cast of fifty, including young ladies Carol Lieb, Joan Gastman, Laurie Margolies, and Gail Jacobs, rehearsed for months under the direction of music director Mr. Paul Irene, Mr. Stephen Silverman, and student director Ivan Karp. Co-stars Michelle Greenman and Tony Ramos worked hard at their roles of Madame DuBonnet and Percival Browne, as did Jean Hecht and Bob Feldman, who were rewarded by many chuckles at their hilarious antics. The result of all the work and harassments was a group of very convincing young flappers and Frenchmen, and the most exhilarating, foot-tapping, fun-filled senior show Van Buren had ever seen.
