The competition they provide is formidable. -President Eisenhower, 1960 State of the Union Address These words of President Eisenhower were recently broadcasted throughout our country. They were emphatically directed towards the youth of America. How do we at Van Buren measure up to this challenge in athletics? We, who shall become interwoven in that fine fabric of our free society, must also strive by our every action and service to make ourselves worthy of such an accountable position. lt is with this thought that l begin my article on athletic achievement at Van Buren. During the last three years, athletic participation in Van Buren has changed from listless indifference to fervent enthusiasm. Our school has violently burst forth from its shell to city-wide renown in five short years. We have reached the apex in ath- letic prowess in baseball, basketball, track and cross-country events, as well as riflery and soccer. ln l958, many of us witnessed the fateful baseball game against Curtis High at Ebbet's Field, which, having been won, afforded Van Buren the City Championship. For the last two years our basketball team received the coveted invitation to represent the South Queens division at Madison Square Garden, in the playoffs for the City Championship. This year our great team gave its honored coach, Charlie Shan- non, an undefeated season going into the semi-finals. And, after beating both Haaren and Jefferson, our Courageous Little Men took fourth place in the City Championship. This year our newly-formed rifle team started off with a bang. lt narrowly missed the championships by losing the deciding match against the Jamaica team. Richard Vehlow, captain of our Cross Country Team, captured the City Champion- ship at Van Cortlandt Park in November. Mel Fishler bowled his way into third place in the City Championship matches recently. Bob Waldhauer made the All-City 'B' Division Soccer Team this season. Alan Green came in second in the P.S.A.L. City Championship Tennis '59 Match. - is-i2: we. e, ..

Attaining these records was of course a result of team cooperation, but certain individuals stand out in our minds as the stars cmd should be given special recognition. Carl Saltz and Larry Kasday Don't think the girls at Van Buren have not done their share! Since intermural sports are not permitted among the weaker sex, clubs have been formed in the school to increase their interest in athletics. Diane Brooks At the Newtown Playday, Vee Bee girls showed their hidden abilities. On the i958 winning relay team were Brenda Rushing, Diane Brooks and Linda Diemer. On the i959 team were Diane O'Reilly, Linda Diemer, Diane Brooks and Brenda Rushing. Linda Diemer also won the Softball trophy in l958, and Brenda Rushing received the Basketball trophy the same year. ln summing up this new venture for Futura, l would like to say that l think it will be very difficult indeed for future generations of Van Burenites to live up to our great record.
