an lv-if it . Ji 5 . ILM: i R. SAVIO M. BREINER 'Z l L A J. COSTER R. ZOHLMAN R. HELBRAUN 170 swf? D0 f0r,lTz1ufyers A prophetic philosopher once stated, A learned man always has riches. Un- doubtedly, he must have been a profound individual, for in Martin Van Buren High School this year, many students were accorded riches in token of their learned abilities. This was a banner year for scholarship, and recipients in most areas far exceeded past performances. ln thc graduating class, Martin Van Buren's own Mr. Univac, Valedictorian Robert R. Savio, obtained an unprecedented high school average of 96.05 lG figure Obtained by a compilation and average ofthe individual's high school grades for the first three yearsl. The other top ten students, placed in order of rank, were Martin Breiner, Joyce Coster, Robert Zohlman, Roanne Helbraun, Sally Greenstein, Stephen Raskin, Phyllis Krumholtz, Michael Waldman, and Karen Hefter. lncidentally, these traditional top ton were in the top one per cent of Van Buren's graduating class, and nine of them attained a 95?-i average or better. Ten individuals also qualified for consideration in the scholarship offered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals to members of the National Honor Society. Savio. Competition in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test produced four Van Buren finalists: Arthur Frank fMr. lnfalliblel, Seth lsman, Michael Waldman, and Herbert Zuckerman. ,Selection was based on a preliminary screening test lthe N.M.S.Q.T.l, excellent results on the College Entrance Boards, and past performance in the high school itself. In the final decisions, Michael Waldman went all the way as he lassoed a monetary scholarship. Seth lsman succeeded in meeting all requirements as he vaulted to a coveted finalist position. The two other semi-finalists were Arthur Frank and Michael Waldman. Nor was Van Buren scholarship confined within liberal arts areas. Seven science students in the school received honorable mention in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search, with Robert R. Savio ultimately placing as one of the forty nation-wide finalists. At the writing of this article, several students were waiting hopefully for notification of other pending scholarship awards. Now that these students have obtained their monetary and scholastic riches as learned individuals, it is hoped that many will consider Ben Franklin's terse words in connection with all future educational pursuits for intellectual riches : Virtue and wisdom are the only riches over which neither thieves nor fortune have any power. For if a man empties his purse into his head, no man may take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. lt is the confident belief of fellow teachers, parents and friends, that all will expend their knowledgeable l'riches wisely, and will emerge as the future formulators of the fate of the Nation.
