Un- doubtedly, he must have been a profound individual, for in Martin Van Buren High School this year, many students were accorded riches in token of their learned abilities. This was a banner year for scholarship, and recipients in most areas far exceeded past performances. ln thc graduating class, Martin Van Buren's own Mr. Univac, Valedictorian Robert R. Savio, obtained an unprecedented high school average of 96.05 lG figure Obtained by a compilation and average ofthe individual's high school grades for the first three yearsl. The other top ten students, placed in order of rank, were Martin Breiner, Joyce Coster, Robert Zohlman, Roanne Helbraun, Sally Greenstein, Stephen Raskin, Phyllis Krumholtz, Michael Waldman, and Karen Hefter. lncidentally, these traditional top ton were in the top one per cent of Van Buren's graduating class, and nine of them attained a 95?-i average or better. Ten individuals also qualified for consideration in the scholarship offered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals to members of the National Honor Society. These worthy individuals were Seth lsman lMr. Scholarshipl, Joyce Coster fMiss Scholarshipt, Arthur Frank, Robert Goldberg, Karen Hefter, Lawrence Parker, Stephen Raskin, Mark Spahn, Corinne Anthony, and Robert R. Savio. Competition in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test produced four Van Buren finalists: Arthur Frank fMr. lnfalliblel, Seth lsman, Michael Waldman, and Herbert Zuckerman. ,Selection was based on a preliminary screening test lthe N.M.S.Q.T.l, excellent results on the College Entrance Boards, and past performance in the high school itself. In the final decisions, Michael Waldman went all the way as he lassoed a monetary scholarship. Of the above, four Merit Scholarship finalists, three qualified as finalists in the General Motors Scholarship Examination. Seth lsman succeeded in meeting all requirements as he vaulted to a coveted finalist position. The two other semi-finalists were Arthur Frank and Michael Waldman. Nor was Van Buren scholarship confined within liberal arts areas. Seven science students in the school received honorable mention in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search, with Robert R. Savio ultimately placing as one of the forty nation-wide finalists. Requirements included excellence in three phases of endeavor: Outstanding performance on a science aptitude examination, performance on previous high school academic record, and a report submitted on a scientific project performed by the applicant. The six other honorable mentions included Martin Breiner, Arthur Frank, Barr Forman, Mark Spahn, Johanna Stenzel iVan Buren's own Madame Curiel, and Philip Wolfson. ln Van Buren's other annual scholarship awards, students surpassed all previous expectations.
