Van Buren is so new . . . wonder how the teachers and students are? It's so dark when I come home and the buses are so crowded . . . took me a long time to wash the footprints off my neck. Sept. I2, 1957-Did it again . . . had my third program change in two daY5- a swimming pool in the building and found myself wading in U puddle of water in front of the school. Nov. 6, 1957-Completed taking the Iowa Test today. Results are supposed to de- termine our aptitudes . . . mine must be hidden. Nov. I2, I957-Caught it today . . . the Asian Flu has caused over fifteen percent of the school to be absent. It is the first really foreign disease l've ever had. Nov. 27, i957-Whewl High school isn't that easy after all . . . iust arrived home after my last midterm exam. Dec. 5, i957-School lobby was scene of chaos . . . ticket sales committee tried Thought there was to pursuade several hundred non-conformists to purchase flowers in honor of VB's birthday . . . Experience led to wisdom-the dye rubbed off. Dec. I3, 1957-Spent an enioyable evening at Cyclorama . . . included several plays and a variety of musical entertainment . . . have about forty programs to remind me. Dec. Io, i957-For the first time today, all freshmen and sophomores voted for class leaders-Marty Levine and Bob Zohlman were the lucky winners . . . Vive la democracy! Feb. 7, i958-What was today like? A day like any other day, except: Lights went off, clocks stopped and I ate raw food in the dark lunchroom. Feb. l7, I958-Had some snowstorm yesterday . . . of course the buses didn't run . . . found out later from my neighbor who went Iby bus'?l that there were only four hundred students in school. Mar. 24, I958-Received a copy of Van Buren's answer to Sputnik today in Bio. -Searchlights of Science-Had to read it over a few times till it became clear to me that I couldn't understand it. May I7, T958-The First Annual Spring Concert was presented tonight . . . Audi- torium was filled to capacity and the performance was worthy of much acclaim. May 23, I958-Visited the school library and saw the science fair. Entries consisted of various types of projects-this is lust one example of our progressive education. June I3, i958-Friday, the thirteenth. Of all days for a Geometry Regents! I hope luck was with me . . . never thought I was superstitious before. Oct. I, i958-Getting back to old routine of school again. A new service Credit system was started this term . . . lust another stub to add to the G. O. Cards . , , can't understand why I can't have four minor services? Oct. 22, i958-Students finally voted to ratify the Constitution of the G.O. It was defeated four times . . . guess it's about time. Dec. I7, i958-Van Buren was named one of the winners of the Parents' Mqgq. zine's Youth Achievement Awards for Juvenile Decency . . . Dec. 23, i958-Former Vee Bees returned today to celebrate the Second Annual Alumni Day. A Christmas program including exerpts from The Messiah was presented . . . after singing for three shows, my voice cracked into many pieces. Jan. 26, i959-ln today's assembly, five foreign students discussed the basic aspects of our image abroad. The boy from England couldn't understand why we all seemed to be dressed alike, when we are free to wear whatever we choose . . . call it conformism. Feb. 24, i959-Our basketball team finally made the Garden . , . over twenty-five hundred Vee Bees crowded on the chartered buses to view the game between V. B. and Columbus H. S. It was a let-down when our team missed the basket and dropped out of the fight for the City Championship. Mar. I4, I959-At the Thirty-fifth Annual Convention of the Columbia Press Asso- ciation, The Beeline and Currents won first place . . . budding iournalists in our midst. April IO, i959-Won the first thing in my life tonight at the Twirp Dance . . . a Johnny Mathis record album. I surely thought that the swing band played much better than the Rocking Chairs, and should have stayed. May 2, 1959-Took the Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test today . . . I might have merit in some things, but I certainly won't qualify. Spent the fastest three hours in my life taking College Boards . . . think I made at least 200 . . . the terrible thing is that they count for me. June 5, i959-The Junior Prom was held in the Cafeteria . . . it was really a swingin' affair. The theme was Bali-Hai and everyone wearing leis . . . during a lindy, I was almost strangled. Oct. I2, I959-Today it was announced in Gym that until Thanksgiving we would have to go out-doors for physical activity . . . It was so cold that we had to run around the track to keep warm . . . What a horrible way to spoil the new field and ruin the girls-the emergency room was loaded with casualties. Oct. I4, i959-The N. Y. S. Scholarship Exams were given today in the auditorium and in the library lfor the lucky onesl . . . the only thing I got was a stiff neck. Oct. I6, I959-The Bohemian Ball was held in the Gym tonight . . . over nine hundred beatniks showed up . . .the Village must have been deserted. Nov. 23, 1959-The iunior class has decided to adopt a Korean orphan . . . wouldn't mind iumping into the wishing well when it's filled. Dec. 5, i959-Now my friends know how I felt in May . . . the .lune seniors took College Boards today . . . hope they got at least three hundred. Jan. l5, i960-Celebrated tonight at the January Dinner-Dance . . .Afterwards a group of us went to a night club and lived it up . . . I knew I shouIdn't have drunk so much punch. Jan. 26, i960-Finished at last! All the studying is over, and I can throw away the piles of history and English notes which are wall-papering my room . . . I'lI never take a Regents Exam again . . . thank goodness! Feb. I, I96O-The most momentous occasion in my life took place today-grad- uated from Van Buren . . . Two hundred students left that wonderful school. Where are most of them going? To college in less than a week . . . that's when we'Il really appreciate Van Buren. But regardless of destination, good luck to them all!
