Ah, yes I remember it well, the time my report card looked like a distress signal: S O S UN UN . . . the time I ran into Mr. Denn while he was going up a down stairway . . . the time Congress almost passed a bill to abolish the Red Youth Organization, Boys' League . . . the time Arista was almost banned from Van Buren as a secret society . . . the time I wore my senior hat to a masquerade and won first prize . . . the time I spent searching for a college which offers a good program for lunch maiors . . . the time I cut English to work on the Student Honor Code . . . the time I wore my winter coat to school and then ran track in my gym suit . . . the time I cut math and English and received a detention slip for missing study . . . the time I gave my senior ring to my iunior boyfriend . . . the time I earned my senior dues by selling swimming pool passes . . . the time I directed a sophomore to room 499 and then couIdn't find my home- room . . . the time I had Jello on my Thanksgiving turkey . . . the time I roasted marshmallows over my old review books . . . the time I had photostats made of my diploma to send to all my teachers . . . lAnd they said it couIdn't be donell the time I laughed at the thought of leaving Van Buren and shed a tear after graduation . . . Yes, we will always remember these experiences, often grave, but now pleasant memories which will be carried fondly by us all into the future. highly-qualified youth leaders of the Forum, two were selected from Van Buren as panel leaders from over one-hundred candidates, only two years ago. Last year we had four winners, one of whom was selected as the General Chairman or leader of the entire Forum, the highest position available, and another was chosen as the foreign student hostess. l say, teenagers affect the future of America. Our cynical adults will readily agree to this fact and point to the rise in crime, juvenile delinquency, and immoral literature, but this is not the true picture. ln reality, this decadence may be a result of adult complacency towards the morals of society. Yet we, the youth, are influencing the nation in a positive sense. For example, the High School Council for the United Nations in New York is organizing American youth to keep them informed of United Nations activities. They conduct press conferences with important people such as Mrs, Roose- velt, and they also hold parties for foreign youth delegates and publish a newspaper. This group is the most active in the nation and has been asked to help plan the organization of our nation's youth in other parts of our country into similar groups. The president, corresponding secretary, and members of the executive board, are, as you probably guessed, all from Van Buren. This is a further example of important work teenagers perform, yet we never read about it. They receive recognition from govern- ment and community leaders, but never from the rest of us. These are iust a few of the ways in which we are influencing our country's future. Did you know that Van Buren students were such important leaders? Did you ever stop to think of the important positions they hold, and the vital iobs they do? Did our parents perform similar deeds when they were young, in the good ole days ? I doubt it. This is the effect of a ten-year old revolution-the teenage revolution. The revolt for recognition. You may be interested in a few more examples of the results of this revolution. One Van Burenite was asked by Radio Free Europe to appear before their micro- phones, but couldn't because it might have endangered the lives of relatives abroad, others have been guest speakers at one-hundred-dollar-a-plate governmental conven- tions, and a Van Buren officer of the High School Council for the United Nations has been asked to go upstate to speak at their high schools in order to organize their U.N. clubs. These are iust more examples of the impressive and important role American youth is playing on the American scene. So, in iust ten short years, the American teenager has changed from a mere student to an active community and national leader. Therefore the fifties, which will go down in history as the decade of revolutions because of the Korean, Latin-American, and Middle East revolutions, have seen a more important revolution-the revolution of the teenager.
