The teenager, an unknown person only ten years ago, is an important person today. Just ten years ago, no one paid any particular attention to us, but today, fashion designers concentrate on our whims, Tin Pan Alley caters to a large degree to the teenage aficionados, psychologists write reports, books and articles analyzing us, and psychiatrists treat our poor misguided parents. Today we are an important influence on the American scene. We have become important molders of public opinion. The field of music offers the most obvious ex- ample. Rock 'n' Roll, the term that brings greater terror to the eyes of our parents than the blood-curdling cry of Tarzan ever brought to any man-eating cannibal, has be- come the most prominent style of music since the days of swing. Another example which is not as obvious and is reminiscent of the old Take me to your leader gags, is in the field of leadership. Did you know that in the United States many teenagers are prominent community leaders? This is especially true in New York City and at Van Buren. New York high school students are often requested to speak before radio, television, and college or high school professors and principals. As a matter of fact, Van Buren sophomores spoke at Columbia before social studies and English chairmen from the eastern seaboard, on the subiect of education. Not long ago, another Van Burenite appeared on the Voice of America, while others have been before television cameras analyzing, instructing, and explaining youth activities. Local organizations, such as the American Legion, have repeatedly asked for Van Buren students to be guest speakers, and borough and city-wide discussions have been organized and run by teenagers with many Van Buren students playing prominent roles. But you haven't heard nuttin' yet, for these are iust a few examples of the role of teenagers on the local scene. These leaders are looked upon with respect to a great degree. I doubt if everyone realizes that the American teenager of today no longer iust exists as his counterpart of ten years ago did, but lives -qnd in so doing is becoming an important personality, assuming responsibility and commanding respect. Teenagers are important world figures, too. Van Buren students are more than iust holding their own in this respect. They are playing vital and prominent roles in world renowned activities. The Daily Mirror Youth Forum has had many Van Burenites par- ticipating in its world-publicized Forum. Of the thirty-three carefully screened qnd -.-.NX
