FRANK Sclzzflar and The greatness of a nation may be manifested in many ways-in its purposes, its courage, its moral responsibility, its cultural and scientific eminence, the tenor of its daily life. But ultimately the source of its greatness is in the individuals who constitute the living substance of the nation, begins the Rockefeller Report, The Pursuit of Excellence. We believe that those who have excelled in their studies deserve the highest form of recognition, for, by excelling, they are contributing to the growth and greatness of our nation. Our schools are dedicated to the training of productive, intelligent citizens. These pages, then, are devoted to those students who have shown a capacity to realize the highest goals of education. Computation of scholastic averages for the first three years of high school deter- mined each senior's rank in the graduating class. The highest average, that of Franklin Abrams, was 95.53'!o. The traditional top ten seniors, roughly one per cent of Van Buren's graduating class, in order of average after Franklin ithe lowest aver- age of the ten was less than two per cent below the highestl were Karen Siegel, Joyce Garter, Richard Frank, Richard Kazden, Rory Butler, Paul Levy, Alan Burg, Loretta Ortaglia, and Burton Brody. Several of them have distinguished themselves as scholarship recipients, and some have won honors in the fields of mathematics, physics, creative writing, and languages. On the basis of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, nine Van Buren boys-Franklin Abrams, Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Rory Butler, Richard Frank, Melvin lngber, Richard Kazden, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter-and one girl, Sylvia Houston, who came to our school from Texas last September, won Merit Honors. Franklin Abrams was notified that he had been chosen to receive a scholarship from one of the organizations supporting this competition. As a result of the highly competitive examination for the Westinghouse Talent Search, Franklin Abrams, Richard Frank, Joel Singer, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter achieved honorable mention. Forty-eight Van Buren students were awarded the general Regents Scholarship: Franklin Abrams, Ronald Bechky, Lois Blum, Jonathan Braverman, Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Rory Butler, Phyllis Dickstein, David Eizenman, Neil Feinstein, Richard Flam, Edward Flax, Robert Francescone, Richard Frank, Joyce Garter, Eugene Gellert, Eric Goldman, Richard Haber, Charles Hennekens, Miriam Horowitz, Melvin lngber, Eliza- beth Karetzky, Richard Kazden, Vera Kleinfeld, Susan Krell, Carol Lane, Stephen Lavenberg, Joan Lebowitz, Paul Levy, Robert Love, Stephen Oren, Loretta Ortaglia,

Of these, fifteen also received the Regents Scholarship for Engineer- ing, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics: Franklin Abrams, Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Richard Flam, Richard Frank, Eugene Gellert, Richard Haber, Miriam Horowitz, Richard Kazden, Vera Kleinfeld, Stephen Lavenberg, Paul Levy, Joshua Riber, Jeffrey Ullman and Ronald Walter. Three girls-Susan Krell, Lenore Sachs, and Patricia Starr- received Regents Nursing Scholarships. Donna Schwartz received a Regents Scholar- ship for Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans. Eight members of the Paul Denn Chapter of the National Honor Society were selected-on the basis of high scores on the Scholarship Qualifying Test-to compete for scholarships offered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals to members of the National Honor Society. These eight were: Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Phyllis Dickstein, Richard Frank, Joyce Garter, Paul Levy, Jeffrey Ullman and Ronald Walter. Of these, Burton Brody, Richard Frank, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter achieved high scores on the final elimination test, the General Aptitude Test, and are finalist candidates for the National Honor Society Scholarships awarded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Certificates were awarded to Richard Frank, Joyce Garter, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter after consideration of their College Board scores by the General Motors Scholarship Corporation. Joyce Garter received one of the hundred coveted General Motors Scholarships. ln addition to these more general scholarships, several students received specialized awards. Patricia Starr won a Nursing Scholarship from the Long Island Federation of Women's Clubs. Gail Tanz was a finalist in the Tobe-Coburn School of Fashion Scholarship competition. As this yearbook goes to press, before the termination of our senior year there will undoubtedly be other scholarships awarded.
