But inch by inch l made my way and traveled down the road, The dust flew, it stung my eyes, I stumbled with my load. Recovering, I kept my track, progressing ever on, And then one day, I raised my eyes and saw the road was gone. The massive wall that once had loomed impassable ahead Had shrunk in size, was now so close, no longer sight to dread. As you have reminded me, the close of the academic year 1959 marks for all of us the end of an important decade, one which you have chosen to endow with the epithet of Hthe fabulous fifties.H How well I remember those years! While you were growing up in them, I and those of my generation lived through them. For some, life in was asked what he NI survived.N For parable with that the fabulous fifties was like that of the French citizen who had done during the French Revolution and whose reply was, most, living in that exciting decade was an experience com- of Ulysses in Tennyson's poem: HMuch have I seen and known: cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments: And much delight of battle with my peers Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.u The fabulous fifties may best be recalled in the future as a decade which centered the attention of man on production: a decade when we produced more goods, employed more people, and created more material wealth than ever before in the history of our nation: a decade in which our motor cars were bulkier, our suburbs burgeoning, our school corridors and university campuses overcrowded, and our shopping centers proliferating. John Kenneth Galbraith in HThe Affluent Societyu summarizes the decade in these words: NBoth the ancient preoccupation with production and the pervasive modern search for security have culminated in our time in a concern for production... A high level of production has become the keystone of effective economic security.H If there is anything disquieting in this picture of the fabulous fifties, it is that other nations, particularly the dictatorships, have also set production as their goal. And sometime in the late fifties we learned that while we were producing far in excess of the rest of the world an abundance of motor cars, television sets, hi-fi's, and gadgets for the Hman who has everythingnq the monolithic states were producing engineers, nuclear physicists, mathematicians, and research biologists and chemists in the ratio of three for every one of ours. However, it was an interesting decade, one which will be fondly recalled by both of us as having as its golden links our school and the pleasant haze that memory draws over our youthful past. The fond backward glance that we cast upon the fabulous fifties must inevitably be replaced by the Nforward lookn that sends its powerful Nsealed beamu into the more exciting, more abundant years that I trust lie ahead for you and your fellow graduates of the Class of 1959. The silver foxes were running from the west, and the red foxes were running from the east. They ran until they reached the top of the mountain, where Renard, the leader ofthe silver, and Leonard, the leader of the red, were face to face. Their people sat down, but they remained standing, contemplating each other. They raised their paws to their people, and no further sound came from the mountain that was half red and half silver but the heavy breathing of the two leaders. Then Renard put down his paw and broke the silence. We are gathered here at the summit of Meeting Mountain to discuss the grave problem confronting us. With our advances in science and technology, we have been building more and more deadly traps in the past years. These traps have been used in the fight between the red and the silver foxes for mastery of the entire forest. So far, the damage done by these traps has been relatively small, and the balance of power has been maintained. But recently we have simultaneously devised a trap that may well end society as we know it, and perhaps all life in the Forest of Foxes. We, the silver, do not know by what methods the traps of the red foxes accomplish their destruction, nor do the red know the secret of the silver. But these traps have both been secretly tested on hunters, and we do know that if they are used against us, our end will soon be upon us. At this point Leonard stepped forward. Friend Renard, he began, let us now get down to business and discuss the future of these traps, and thus our fate. The red foxes and the silver alike were held spellbound, although the sun crossed the heavens twice as their leaders discussed and argued. Their eyes were fiery and their tails quivered as the discussion grew more and more heated. At last their eyes became calm and their tails drooped quietly. They stood up, and Leonard announced, A decision has been reached. Our world is safe. All traps are to be destroyed at once. The citizens were motionless for one moment, and then, as a body, they lumped to their feet and waved their tails madly. Some leaped high into the air, and the atmos- phere was one of mad reioicing. l Peace forever! shouted Renard. Hooray! Peace! Hooray! echoed the foxes. Work together! cried Leonard. I . f 1' s K, 4? , Hooray! Together! Hooray! echoed the foxes. gff' Q. And they all went home, The fable is not yet ende d. lt has three possible conclusions. The first and second are much alike in essence: Both camps of foxes were clever. Both traps must be, each side knew, well camouflaged, expertly hidden. So once they were in their own homes, they did not dare to venture out, for lear of being caught in an enemy trap, even though the enemy had declared that his traps would be destroyed. After all, everybody knew that foxes were sly and not to be trusted. Thus, both the red foxes and the silver foxes perished of inaction and starvation. In the second ending: The foxes all realized th-at they had to trust each other. But iust to make sure, each refrained from destroying 1is own traps until the sincerity of the opponent should be proven. So they stepped cautiously out of their abodes, ready to spring back at any moment. And the red foxerz and the silver were all killed by each other's traps. But the fable might end like this: The red and the silver 'ioxes went home, surrendering themselves to trust as their only salvation. And in the days that followed, no trap stopped their steps. They lived out their normal lives with iust a shadow of fear as they walked through the forest, and sometimes a start at the unnatural cracking of a branch. But their children grew up free of the taint of fear. Red and silver children worked together to liberate them- selves from the menace of hunters and from nature's pitfalls. And they lived happily ever after. As the Fabulous Fifties come to a close, we look ahead to the future. Will we discover that we have been cast in molds of distrust and preiudice? Will we step fearfully out into life, only to be ensnared by a trap? Will the Fabulous Fifties give way to the Sinister Sixties, or will the coming decade be remembered as the Secure Sixties? Surely the teachings of past years, and the exigencies of the present will iolt civiliza- tion out of its prolonged and turbulent adolescence into a rich and rewarding maturity. The trends, the events, the character of the times have made an indelible imprint upon us. lt was in this decade that we started and completed the bedrock of our formal education. When the decade began we were children, as it ends, we cross the threshold of adulthood. What this decade has given us, and what we have taken from it, will profoundly influ- ence our lives. The international political events of the Fifties were ominous in portent. This was a decade marked by the emergence of two armed camps-one despotic, one democratic-each pressing to establish its own political phi- losohpy. lt saw the continuance of a strong tide of nationalism which had begun in 1776 and was now storming the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. In some areas of the globe, old empires disintegrated, some of the fragments to be engulfed by the newly constituted Communist imperialism. This decade began under the shadow of war as had the previous one. Only this was a different kind of war-a war small in size but fought against a background of weapons that could make the world uninhabitable. The Korean war was a contained conflict, a iet of flame bursting forth at a point where the cold war had grown hot. lt was a testing ground and a time of calculation, of miscalculation, of brinkmanship, resulting in large shifts in the balance of power in Indo-China and the Middle East. ln 1952, for the first time in twenty years, a Republican became President. ln Dwight D. Eisenhower the G.O.P. had found a leader whose popularity approached that of Franklin Roosevelt. With General Eisenhower as their leader, the Republican Party gained control of both houses of Congress. How- ever, the sentiment of the nation remained predominantly Democratic as evi- denced by the regaining of Congressional control by the Democrats in 1954. Another significant political change was wrought by the third branch of the government when, in 1954, the Supreme Court declared segregation in the public schools unlawful. To the South this meant a maior social upheaval, an upheaval that is still continuing on political, social, and economic levels. Little Rock took its place among the historical symbols that are created when the old order changeth, yielding place to the new. Many of the political developments in the Fifties gained significance be- cause of scientific advances. The atomic era had begun in the previous decade, but it was in the Fifties that it began to come of age. The force that had made the Korean War so ominous now metamorphosed itself into more productive forms. ln Shipping- port, Pennsylvania, the first reactor to be used for the production of commercial elec- tricity was built. The atomic reactor also proved to be the ideal unit for powering ships both above and below the surface of the sea. The great destructive power of the atom was recognized not only in the form of a blast but in invisible fallout, and efforts were made to curtail the testingof atomic weapons. However, not all the advances in technology were confined to the military. lndustry took giant strides in automation, and civilian electronics came to the fore. We began what may well be called a second industrial revolution. Another revolution occurred in the field of consumer goods. There was increased mechanization in the kitchen, a car and a television set for every five people, and air conditioning in many homes. The burden of the housewife was lightened with the introduction of new methods of packaging and the increased use of frozen foods. Maior breakthroughs also occurred in the field of medicine with the development of the vaccine against infantile paralysis and the discovery of more powerful antibiotics. Encouraging progress was made in the field of atomic medicine in approaching a cure for cancer. The Fifties were a decade of economic prosperity and expansion. Industry grew rapidly as indicated by the increase in national income from S277 billion in 1950 to over S360 billion in 1958. A large measure of this growth was due to a rapid increase in population from 150 million people in 1950 to 175 million in 1958. This increase of 25 million in eight years compares with one of 9 million in the decade 1930 to 1940. The labor force grew from 40 million in 1950 to 66 million in 1958, because of large population gains in the Forties. The nation grew rapidly and an atmosphere of optimism was generated, as indicated by the increasing birthrate. This feeling of optimism was further strengthened when the economic growth trend proved strong enough to easily overcome two minor recessions which occurred in 1953-1954 and 1957-1958. ln essence, in this decade the world was vastly different from that which had con- fronted returning veterans after World War ll. It was a time of rapid industrial develop- ment and of an upsurge in economic optimism. There was an atmosphere of vigor and of looking toward the future with confidence. It was a decade of great scientific achievement, both pure and applied. Man learned new means of lessening the burdens of life and of eliminating life completely. Perhaps these scientific achievements created more problems than they overcame, for if this decade lacked, it lacked in the social and political areas. It lacked in not being able to find solutions for the problems it posed, it did not teach man to live in peace with himself. Such was the decade in which the class of '59 obtained its education. The full influence that the Fifties have had on our lives is as yet indeterminate. Future decades will tell the story, a story whose recurrent motif will be- The Fabulous Fifties. We are nearing the end of the Fabulous Fifties--ten years which repre- sent a decade of outstanding achievement and world progress. To the gradu- ates of '59, however, the latter part of the Fifties has an additional sig- nificance-the fond memory of our years spent at Van Buren High. We remember our consternation at the immensity of Van Buren as we entered for the first time-its spacious halls, modern classrooms and labora- tories, its tremendous auditorium and gym. Could we ever forget the irrita- tion at constantly finding ourselves on the stairway leading to the roof instead of to the third floor? Reminiscences of our first few days in Van Buren bring to mind the warm smile and friendly greeting extended to us by Mr. Hopkins, our principal. Those of us who entered Van Buren as freshmen will recall the first G.O. elections. How small and inadequate we felt then, looking up with envy at the candidates sitting on the stage, never dreaming that one day we ourselves, or perhaps our friends, would have the same opportunity, yet it never seemed quite the same once we were up there. Familiarity dulled the glamor some- what, but, slowly, something of more intrinsic value began to form-a sense of leadership and responsibility. Then come the birth of the G.O. We'll always remember the wonderful iob done by Mr. Weissenberg, our first G.O. adviser. He was succeeded by Mr. Radwin who has carried on in the spirited Van Buren tradition. Soon the many committees were formed-Elections, Turkey Mountain, Publicity, Enter- tainment, Ticket Sales, Art, and Social Service, the student body turned out in large numbers-and we were in business. Could we ever forget the honors bestowed upon our school, our own BeeLine winning a Columbia Press Conference Award, the city baseball championship, the cross-country awards, and honorable mention in the contest sponsored by Parents Magazine for our Creedmoor Toy Drive? We will never forget Marty, our typical Van Burenite, who brought tears of laughter to our eyes with each new issue of the BeeLine, nor will we forget celebrating Martin Van Buren's birthday every year on December 5. June 1957! That was the date Futura, our first yearbook, made its debut. Mid-terms, finals, Regents-these were strange new words that we were soon to become accustomed to. Then, one day, we heard about Arista and found ourselves diligently doing our school work and rushing around trying to get service credit. We remember the shows in which many of us participated- Time Out For Ginger, Highlights, Showcase of l957, and Cyclorama. We saw the birth of our teams, Cheerleaders and Twirlers. Cheering our teams on to victory was always part of our school life from the very beginning. We remember the many hours the boys spent practicing baseball, basketball, track and tennis in hopes of winning a major letter, and the after-effects felt by the girls after kicking and iumping for hours in their tryouts for Cheer- leaders. February 24, 1959 was a memorable day. Twenty-five hundred Van Buren students cheered at the Garden for our basketball team. As sophomores, we welcomed Mr. Denn, our new principal, who, in very short time, became inseparable from our image of Van Buren High School. How can we forget the dances-the V-B Bounce, Mardi Gras, St. Patty's Day, V-B Bop, Twirp, Victory, Winter Carnival, Junior Prom, and the Senior Dinner Dance. September 1958-we were now seniors, ably led by Steve Raymond and Paul Frieser, and our senior adviser, Mr. Rappaport. We awakened to the fact that we were now to choose a college and career. Soon we found ourselves engulfed in a torrent of college boards, scholarship exams, applications, interviews, references, and anxious waiting and worrying. We were seniors! How could you tell? Certainly not by our fantastic display of senior hats, buttons, rings and keys, nor by the sudden all-knowing look about us. Who can forget those frantic last-minute touches before being photo- graphed for the yearbook? Then came Senior Day and the Senior Show and those hilarious costumes you never thought your friends had the nerve to wear. We unveiled Semavabu, our senior mascot, at the Senior Dinner Dance. At long last we reached the semi-climax of our high school days-the Senior Prom in the magnificent Terrace Room of the Statler Hotel-the introduction of the Prom Committee amidst soft music and billowy chiffon. And finally-graduation-the pride, the sorrow at leaving, the tears and good-bye promises, the wishing of luck, happiness, and success-and those words at the end of the ceremony, Will the alumni please stand and sing the Alma Mater. And as voices rose-loud and clear, you knew that the tears on your cheek were not tears of sorrow. They represented your wonderful high school years -years that could never be recaptured and yet never lost, for they had molded the foundation for a wonderful future. You knew that these precious years had taken their place in a never-to-be- forgotten part of your heart-a part especially reserved for the Fabulous Fifties. But ultimately the source of its greatness is in the individuals who constitute the living substance of the nation, begins the Rockefeller Report, The Pursuit of Excellence. We believe that those who have excelled in their studies deserve the highest form of recognition, for, by excelling, they are contributing to the growth and greatness of our nation. Our schools are dedicated to the training of productive, intelligent citizens. These pages, then, are devoted to those students who have shown a capacity to realize the highest goals of education. Computation of scholastic averages for the first three years of high school deter- mined each senior's rank in the graduating class. The highest average, that of Franklin Abrams, was 95.53'!o. The traditional top ten seniors, roughly one per cent of Van Buren's graduating class, in order of average after Franklin ithe lowest aver- age of the ten was less than two per cent below the highestl were Karen Siegel, Joyce Garter, Richard Frank, Richard Kazden, Rory Butler, Paul Levy, Alan Burg, Loretta Ortaglia, and Burton Brody. Several of them have distinguished themselves as scholarship recipients, and some have won honors in the fields of mathematics, physics, creative writing, and languages. On the basis of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, nine Van Buren boys-Franklin Abrams, Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Rory Butler, Richard Frank, Melvin lngber, Richard Kazden, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter-and one girl, Sylvia Houston, who came to our school from Texas last September, won Merit Honors. Franklin Abrams was notified that he had been chosen to receive a scholarship from one of the organizations supporting this competition. As a result of the highly competitive examination for the Westinghouse Talent Search, Franklin Abrams, Richard Frank, Joel Singer, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter achieved honorable mention. Three girls-Susan Krell, Lenore Sachs, and Patricia Starr- received Regents Nursing Scholarships. Donna Schwartz received a Regents Scholar- ship for Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans. Eight members of the Paul Denn Chapter of the National Honor Society were selected-on the basis of high scores on the Scholarship Qualifying Test-to compete for scholarships offered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals to members of the National Honor Society. These eight were: Burton Brody, Alan Burg, Phyllis Dickstein, Richard Frank, Joyce Garter, Paul Levy, Jeffrey Ullman and Ronald Walter. Of these, Burton Brody, Richard Frank, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter achieved high scores on the final elimination test, the General Aptitude Test, and are finalist candidates for the National Honor Society Scholarships awarded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Certificates were awarded to Richard Frank, Joyce Garter, Jeffrey Ullman, and Ronald Walter after consideration of their College Board scores by the General Motors Scholarship Corporation. Joyce Garter received one of the hundred coveted General Motors Scholarships. ln addition to these more general scholarships, several students received specialized awards. Patricia Starr won a Nursing Scholarship from the Long Island Federation of Women's Clubs. Gail Tanz was a finalist in the Tobe-Coburn School of Fashion Scholarship competition. As this yearbook goes to press, before the termination of our senior year there will undoubtedly be other scholarships awarded. The people who have influenced the molding of our futures have been many, and yet, we alone are now responsible for putting to use all the things others have so knowingly and so unselfishly taught us. Since our first days in school, our teachers and our parents have tried to instill in us a sense of sportsmanship and of responsibility to- ourselves and to others, a thirst for knowledge, and an understanding of right and wrong. These teachings are of the utmost importance to us in getting along with others and living in harmony with the people in our society. Yet it is important that this design for living be put into practice, and in so doing will we be able to realize fulfillment. The knowledge we have acquired in high school has served as a firm foundation on which we may build to strengthen our way of life in the future. The time for frivolous, undisciplined thoughts and actions has come to an end. We have approached maturity and must now assume the responsibility and good judgment which, in turn, will lead to adulthood. Youthful impulsiveness should be replaced by carefully made decisions. The seeds of knowledge we have gathered during our high school years must now be sorted, and only those which promise to bear fruit in the future-the friendships, the learning, the love of life and the ever- enduring freshness of youthful ideas-will we nurture.
