THE STRIPES 1968 Martin Memorial School of Nursing Mount Airy, North Carolina History of M.M.S.N. The Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was first opened for classes May 1, 1918. The hospital was named in honor of Dr. R. S. Martin, father of Dr. Moir S. Martin. The school was under the administration of Dr. Martin and affiliated with the Martin Memorial Hospital. The first class was graduated May 31, 1921. There were 250 nurses graduated from the School of Nursing out of 32 graduating classes. The Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was closed May, 1953 when the hospital was destroyed by fire. A new school of nursing opened August, 1958. The Board of Trustees voted to retain the name Martin Memorial School of Nursing for the new school. It is affiliated with the Northern Hospital of Surry County. At the end of 1967, 76 nurses have graduated from the school out of seven graduating classes. 2 SILHOUETTES QujQ — U l— luQ Mrs. Jeanette Kennedy, R.N. A native of Asheville, N.C., she received her nursing diploma from Memorial Mission Hospital of Western North Carolina. She served there as head nurse, and also worked at North Carolina Memorial Hospital of Chapel Hill, before coming to M.M.S.N. in 1965. In her leisure hours our dedicatee serves as a member of the local board of the American Cancer Association, an active member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Sunday School, and she is presently serving as President of the Women’s Club of White Plains, N.C. She is serving as Senior Sponsor and has devoted uncounted hours to helping students. Do every day a good deed that will put a smile of joy on someone’s face. Class History On September 7, 1965, twenty-five eager and ambitious girls entered a new phase of life. This first year was filled with many hours of study, clinical experience, and fund-raising events as we made our first steps into the world of nursing. The stereo, senior class gift to the school, was made possible by our fund-raising projects. Along with a learning experience, we widened our scope of geography by traveling to our affiliations. Through our psychiatric training in Lexington, Kentucky, we learned to better understand ourselves and to understand the emotional needs of others. To better enable us to care for the “little folks” of our society we gained knowledge through a variety of experiences offered to us at Children’s Hospital. Washington, D. C. But both affiliations were not all work and no play. As we approach our long awaited goal, we look back and see eleven former classmates who have chosen other goals in life.
