„ r ' ’ i.1 DEDICATION dedicate this, the 1961 edition of THE STRIPES, to Mj ertha Ashby. Having served jP rector of Nurses for the former and present Martin Memorial Schools of Nursing, she has been a beacon of light, endeavoring to aid each student in the achievement of her highest goal. As time plays her hand, the graduates of this Alma Mater will look back, for¬ ever casting a sincere thank you to one who has given her time and abilities to make this a school of which we can be proud. AGAIN WE SAY, ’’THANK YOU, MRS. ASHBY.” HISTORY In 1918, the Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was established, the first class of students graduating in 1921. The original school was affiliated with the Martin Memorial Hospital where Dr. Moir S. Martin, the founder, was Medical Director and Chief of Staff. The school operated continuously until 1953 when extensive fire damage to the hospital forced the discontinuation of operation. During this period of operation more than two-hundred and fifty students were graduated. The Northern Hospital of Surry County was opened to patients in April, 1957. At that time plans were being made for a school of nursing to operate in connection with the hospital. The hospital’s Board of Trustees named the new school The Martin Memorial School of Nursing in tribute to Dr. Martin. On September 28, 1958, the first class of students was ad¬ mitted to the new school. The students received clinical instruction at the hospital in all services except pediatrics and psychiatry. These special services are provided through affiliation with other hospitals. This year of 1961, that first class is graduating from the school. It is with great pride that we watch these new graduates join their predecessors, as we who remain endeavor to one day become members of the dignified ranks who have graduated before us.
