The Martin Luther King Award, given annually since 1977, is designed to honor the outstanding boy and girl student who best exemplify the ideals of Dr. King ' s life. The criteria used for choosing the nominees were that the student: exert a positive influence on others; show leadership potential ; be involved in school activities ; attend class consistently; display good scholarship; have established cross-cultural friendships; communicate well wdth others; be wdlling to take a stand on his or her owoi beliefs despite peer differences; become involved in community activities such as the Red Cross , tutoring , youth groups . The nominees for the 1979 award were: Freda Adamos, Katy Adler, Cammie Antoncich, Merri-Beth Borchers, Rafi Brinner, Alyson Browoi , Elaine Coleman, Porshe Combash, Andre Cotton, Lovell Coverson, Dan Dean, Susan Fine, Trina Floyd, Maia Gahtan, Sheila Goodie, Andrew Goto, Keith Gruen, James Guthrie, Jessica Irschich, Sharad Jain, Timothy Jones, I.
