You will look at the pictures and say things like “Remember when ... ?” When you see my picture, you’ll probably remember me standing behind the cage selling you your book. It is my hope that as your yearbook grows older, you will have only happy memories of your stay at King. Ms. Ferreira, Principal This has been a very important year at King. We have “a new look,’’ “a good feeling for one another’’ at King this year, and that’s what makes for a good-looking Martin Luther King Junior High School. I feel privileged to have served as your vice principal this year. Because of you and the cooperation that you have given to me and to your teachers and other staff members, we were able to maintain our high standard of education. Congratulations to you, the students here at King! I hope you have a wonderful summer. Anything but that!” “You’re cute, too!” “Call the girl at Pacific Plan!” Some people call King “A palace of sin,” but I think that King, compared to any other school, is a very good school. Think of it as a conversation piece. Next time somebody asks you how you like King, say: ‘‘Oh, it’s pretty fun. The outside appearance isn’t exactly fascinating, but the staff is great, they have super elective possibilities, and very good gym equipment. They’ll probably think you’re crazy, but what does it matter? You’ll. feel good inside, Carolina Torres 6 The alien floated slowly to earth in his spacecraft as the engines whirred to a stop, dropping him gently on the King playground. As the door of his airship opened, he leaped out, ready to confront any foe who wished to challenge him. Then he stopped in amazement, for before him was a field of stone spotted with huge mountains of rock formed in simple geometric figures. Suddenly there was a loud clanging. Startled, the alien glanced around trying to determine where the noise had come from. At that moment several doors opened in the monolothic heaps of stone, and hundreds of small, strange creatures begem running in and out of these doors, their faces expressionless. The alien attempted to stop a few of these weird creatures, but they rushed by; then another bell rang and the last of the creatures disappeared through the doorways. The alien, uncertain as to what to do, hesitated and then walked fearfully up to one of the doors, slowly pulled it open, and peered in. Stretching out before him to curve away out of sight was a long hallway, its walls covered with little doors. The alien went carefully up to one of the doors and pulled on the handle, but the door refused to open. The alien frowned slightly; then he pulled out a ray gun and fired at the door, completely obliterating it. Out of a small continued on page 8 V 7 “There’s something fishy goint on, isn’t there?” “Please not now, I’m right in the middle of a Rothschild!” “Does anyone know how to start this mach- ine?” “Oh no, not more homework!” compartment behind the door fell what seemed to be hundreds of small rectangular things and a brown, shapeless, paper form. The alien looked at these for a moment in puzzlement and then went on to the next door and treated it the same way. The same results. Were these storage chambers? The alien scratched his head, perplexed by this strange place. As he continued on down the hallway, he noticed that at even intervals there were larger doors. He crept silently up to one of these and tried to see in through the many windows in the door. The glass in the windows was of a strange texture, making everything fuzzy, but the alien managed to make out a tall thin figure gesturing with what had to be hands, as they were positioned at the end of his her its arms, although they had many fewer fingers than the alien’s. The alien, taking this for a war dance, threw open the door and leapt in, waving his sword above his head and shaking his ray gun in a menacing gesture. Then he stopped and stood there in astonishment as the room erupted with screams, and the small continued on page 9 8 “I should’ve been a nun!” “Now I think it’s time for that man-to-man talk!” “Well, if you’re going to be like that, you may just step out of my classroom!” “Would it be cheating if you helped me with my home- work?” “Say Cheese!” “Where IS that book on how to treat skunk odor?” creatures that filled the room started diving out windows and scrambling for the doors. Meanwhile the figure at the front fainted and fell backwards, hitting the floor with a dull thud. The alien walked over to it, looking into its upturned face (an extremely ugly one by alien standards). At that moment the creature woke up, gave one final scream, and then fainted again. The alien jumped three feet in the air and at least seven backwards, propelling himself out the door altogether. He stared at the thing on the floor, surprised by its reaction. Then he raced out of the building and down to his spaceship. The door of the spaceship opened, and he mounted the stairs to the entrance with relief. There he turned around and looked back over the meadow of rock to the strange piles of stone. Then, shaking his head, he walked back into his aircraft and flew off into space. Was it a world gone mad? Charles Browning 9 “Unfortunately, this is the only thing that keeps me going all day!’’ “Look, the roof is falling!” “Women, women, women! They’ll get all my hair before I’m through!” “Yay, team!” “Now, all I have to do is unscrew this cap and . . . ” “Who poisoned my coffee!” 10 by ( YYC ' vRtY hiiBB Abdur— Rahim, LaRhonda Adamos, Joel I’ll spend almost one quarter of my life going to school, and King, at present, is that portion of my life. I go to school to learn, and with the knowledge I receive from King, I work to better my mind and body. Though I respect King for its strive to t each students, there are some aspects of King that displease me. I resent the way some teachers run their classes, but I agree with others. I think King has not put in a full effort to please its students, though things have been, and are being done. In King I have gone through many changes that have bettered me, and probably worsened me, but in King I have always felt a certain satisfaction as I finish one semester and prepare for the next.
