gd ?Z7 Dear Members of the Class of 1978: Our theme for this past anniversary year was ' 'Growing in the Lord' ' . It re- flects jesus' own words in john 15:5 where He says, I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing . ' ' jesus was a spellbinder, a master of illustrations. We are told in Scripture that people were astonished at His doctrine, for He taught as One having authority. His illustration of a vine and branches is typical and one to which His listeners could relate . As our Vine , He is truly our Lord and Savior. He who calls Himself the Vine left the bosom of the Father, became Man, lived all human exper- iences, suffered, and died as our Substitute. Through Him forgiveness, hope, and new life are ours. As branches on a vine are many and different, we also are diversified people having varied appearances, needs, and talents. But common to all of us is our sinful natLu'e , for we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. What a comfort to be attached to the Vine for forgiveness, strength, and nourishment to grow! Growth is change but not all change is growth. Growth has to be in the right direction and with the proper motivation. Paul says in Ephesians 4, ' 'Grow up into Him who is the Head' ' . This means to become more like Him and less like omselves. That's difficult! It means to crucify and deny oneself, to mortify the flesh, to put off the work of darkness, and to walk in the Spirit. Growth means not only to be less like ourselves but also less for ourselves. It means to take on the servant image which Christ Himself had. We are to lose ourselves in service to others. Dear graduate , you are unable to experience this kind of growth with your own desire and effort. Only the power of God's Holy Spirit can bring about this change . Pray for it! I also pray that this growth may be in each of you. Christian maturity is an ongoing process. Martin Luther has been an environment which has attempted to help you in this process. May God's Spirit live in each of you and keep you in His loving and protecting care . Congratulations ! Yours in Christ, Roman C . Valleskey PRINCIPAL Directory
