The Martin Luther Spartans once again had a very successful football season in 1977. All of the hard work and practice paid off for the team, although not at first. The Spartans opened the season with an 8-O nonconference loss to Dominican. In that game Dominican ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown but M.L. came back and outplayed them statistically, but could not score . From here on they played football well, win- ning six straight games. Included in those six victories were five games where M.L. 's defense totally shut out their oppo- nents, while the offense averaged 35 points a game. The win- ning streak ended against the Class B Champion St. Marys. The players gave 110W , but came up short on the scoreboard 34- 21 . Following this they also lost to University School in a close game 19-16. M.L. took third place in conference with a 4-2 record, over-all they were 6-3. A good attitude, good re- serves, and some fine seniors made the season a success. Next season hopefully will see M.L. 41. I- i 1- nn 8 Varsity Football FOO1BALL-VARSITY SEPTEMBER 3 Domtnxcan 2.00 10 at Was Lutheran 780 17 Wayland 200 24 John F. It was a disap- pointment to lose to Northwestern Prep in the 4th game , but the loss helped the players realize that they need to con- stantly improve . The Golf Team had an excellent season this year and by far the best in M.L. history. Led by Steve Maike, their senior captain and All Conference player, M.L. went on to take second place in con- ference. They did well all year with a 19-5 over-all record and a 17-3 conference record. M.L. came within 5 shots of taking the first conference championship, since this is the first year that the Midwest Prep has had conference golf. Wayland just beat them out by 5 strokes with an 18-2 record, Several M.L. records were set this year. One set was for the lowest 4 man score and another one was set by Steve Maike for the lowest 9 hole score with a 40. Losing only 2 seniors should give M.L. a good team next year. Will the jury find him guilty? That was the first of three one act plays presented this spring, by Martin Lu- ther. The second, ' 'The Black Box, ' ' was an unusual one, about a young boy who is accosted in the park, by a box. Will Arthur catch his bus, in full possession of his pen, hat, shoes, and sports coat? If you came to the play, you know the answer. In the last play, ' 'The Happy journey to Camden and Trenton' ' it was enjoyable to be with the family on their drive to see their daughter. It re- flects jesus' own words in john 15:5 where He says, I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing . ' ' jesus was a spellbinder, a master of illustrations. We are told in Scripture that people were astonished at His doctrine, for He taught as One having authority. His illustration of a vine and branches is typical and one to which His listeners could relate . As our Vine , He is truly our Lord and Savior. He who calls Himself the Vine left the bosom of the Father, became Man, lived all human exper- iences, suffered, and died as our Substitute. Through Him forgiveness, hope, and new life are ours. As branches on a vine are many and different, we also are diversified people having varied appearances, needs, and talents. But common to all of us is our sinful natLu'e , for we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. What a comfort to be attached to the Vine for forgiveness, strength, and nourishment to grow! Growth is change but not all change is growth. Growth has to be in the right direction and with the proper motivation. Paul says in Ephesians 4, ' 'Grow up into Him who is the Head' ' . This means to become more like Him and less like omselves. That's difficult! It means to crucify and deny oneself, to mortify the flesh, to put off the work of darkness, and to walk in the Spirit. Growth means not only to be less like ourselves but also less for ourselves. It means to take on the servant image which Christ Himself had. We are to lose ourselves in service to others. Dear graduate , you are unable to experience this kind of growth with your own desire and effort. Only the power of God's Holy Spirit can bring about this change . Pray for it! I also pray that this growth may be in each of you. Christian maturity is an ongoing process. Martin Luther has been an environment which has attempted to help you in this process. May God's Spirit live in each of you and keep you in His loving and protecting care . Congratulations ! Yours in Christ, Roman C .
