SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Sooner or later all good thmgs must come to an end and before the graduatmg seniors IS the end of four eventful and happy years at Martln High School Though these years may be only a memory in the future they will al ways be cherished as the building stones of our lives We the class of 54 have always used the theme of originality Due to crowded condi tions m the elementary school building our class as eighth graders was moved to the high school Thus we were the first of many e1ghth graders to be lncluded with the high school That same year we were the first class ever to wm both the girls and boys Weakley County Junior High Basketball Tournament Although we were inside the high school buildlng we really felt like a group of outsiders It was not until the followmg year that we began to feel at home In the fall of 1951 one hundred and six students entered the doors of Martin High School as green freshmen In our first class election we chose Charles Mayo to a t as our president We wondered around most of the year in a daze but finally we found our way around the campus and began to feel at home We all dreaded lmtiation day but xt proved really to be a lot of fun Along with all this we were acquiring knowledge from books and school act1v1t1es When football and basketball came into focus Farra Mai Summers and Jamece Crockett were elected freshman cheer leaders We began our next year by electing Mike Stanford as class president We felt more im portant because now we were to get our re venge by lllltlatlng the new class of green freshmen Along with all the fun however we had plenty of work to do Selectlng our major and mmor courses of study was an 1m portant problem because the foundatlon of our success in life would be based upon these selec txons In 1952 we came ba k to school as Jolly Juniors but our work out weighed our pleas ures The problems and worries that we did not have in our sophomore year were doubled during this year but having Jere Freeman as Poqe 18 our capable president lessened them There was the proJect of obtalnmg money for that blg event, the Junior and Senior Banquet Finally after much planning pract1c1ng and preparation that glorious night April 21 ar rxved Juniors and semors gathered in the elementary school cafeteria for a delicious banquet plus a clever floor show by the tal ented Juniors We formed the Grand March which led us 1nto the gymnas1um where we cnJoyed games and dancing We further car ricd out our theme of being original by being the first class to have an orchestra for the dance Tom Lanardos drummers spe 1al1ty was the outstanding event for the evening During th1s year we had two winners in the Lion Oil Companys essay contest Mlke Stan ford won a S1 000 scholarsh1p and Anne Meek won a S20 cash award On August 31 1953 fifty nine dignified seniors returned to M H S for thelr last year We began our many senior activities on Sep tember the tenth when we ordered our class rings Next was the election of the all import took place among the candidates It ended when we went to the polls and elected the fol lowing group of capable officers Charles Pitts presxdent Mike Stanford vice presldent Rena Harding secretary Joanne White treas urer Benell McCollum and Hobart Beale re porters We did not know what work was until we started working on the annual We elected Jerry Watson and Betsy Buckley co editors With the help of many capable semors and a few Juniors Jerry and Betsy under the guld ance of Mrs W1les are putting forth a fme annual Now we are makmg plans for our class play and many other school wide ac t1Vltl6S When we have our diplomas in our hands we shall breathe a slight sigh of relief and of regret L1ke all classes before us we of 54 are glad to be graduatmg but are sad to thmk our days at dear ole M H S are over All f1fty nine of us realize that without the guld ance of our sponsors through these years many tunes we might have fallen short of our goal Good bye Martin High School the time spent wlth you w11l forever remam deep in the memories of each one of the members of the class of 1954 1 . v . . . . . . .
