MARTIN HIGH SCHOOL PEP SQUAD Realizing that a friendly atmosphere among one ' s fellowmen is the most prized possession of nations today, the 1944-45 Martin Hi Tigerettes vowed that they would striye to promote good will among all school organizations and activities. At every event, not under the supervision of another organization, the traditional red and white uniforms and the precise march with its smooth cadence was seen. Organized three years ago for the purpose of rendering serv- ice wherever possible, this organization has made amazing strides under the sponsorship of its director, Miss Ruth Young. The Tigerettes have matched for all football games, pep parades, 22nd of February, and sponsored pep rally, besides pro- ducing an outstanding Christmas Assembly. Armistice Day found them up brig ht and early selling poppies. Again in January the girls came forth to collect money for the infantile paralysis drive. Thus, the year is brought to a close when the city beholds them in the Senior Review. December 19, 1944, found the Tigerettes at their Annual Christ- mas Party, while homage to the Tigers was the underlying theme of their Sprmg Dance. The climax of the year, however, is the Annual Banquet held in May. At this function new officers are inaugurated and assume their duties with the well wishes of their predecessors. This year ' s team is especially strong in the field events and their mile relay team has already taken first in the Robstown meet. So far this year, the Tigers have entered in tv o meets, the Bord er Olympics, and the Robstov n Relays. In the Border Olym- pics, Hector Rocha, outstanding half-miler, came in second. At the Robstown Relays Laredo took third place out of nineteen high school teams entered. The mile relay team came in first, Rocha captured first in the 880, Avant tied for first in the high jump, Carey tied for second in the pole vaulting, the 440 relay team took fourth. In the coming meets in Corpus Christi and Kingsville the Laredo boys are expected to ring up quite a fev r points. In last year ' s district meet at Corpus Christi and the regional meet at Kingsville, Doyle Avant and Hector Rocha placed in both meets and made the trip to the State Meet at Austin. Doyle was entered in the high jump and Hector in the 880-yard run. Neither boy placed, but they are both back this year and are expected to return to the State Meet.
