! E[ iCAW N To Miss Lela McKinley, who is on ideal teacher, highly re- spected and appreciated by the entire student body, the Annual Staff has the honor and privilege of dedicating this 1944 Pitahaya. We rate her highly for her understanding ways and sympathetic attitude toward her pupils. Miss McKinley, born in Pearsall, Texas, and a graduate of the local high school, is now head of the Mathematics Department. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College, Columbia, Colo- rado, and Texas University where she received her B.A. and M.A. degrees. She majored in mathematics, history, and education, and minored in economics. She is a past president of the Alpha Nu Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma. While she teaches mathematics because she likes it. Miss McKinley ' s ambition is to have a class in which everybody knows enough to pass! I know this class better than any other Senior Class, for I have taught most of its members algebra, geometry, and trigo- nometry, stated Miss McKinley in reference to the Class of ' 44. It is an outstanding class, and I expect great achievements from its members.

FQKEV UKP Because we recognize in China an ally of superb courage, because we feel for her long-suffering peoples, and because we admire Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek and his dauntless wife, we are using China as the theme of our 1944 La Pitahaya. We present on our pages pen sketches of Chinese scenes and characters made by Buddy Key, Doyle Avant, and Alberto Santos and quotations of Chinese thinkers, from the proverbs of Confucius to the memorable words of the Missimo in speak- ing to the American people on our friendship with her country. For the future, when the Sons of Martin High School have returned from the battlefields of the world, and China is free of her barbaric invaders, we have a sincere hope that the unity brought about between ourselves and China, due to the danger of a common enemy, may not be dissolved.
