We present on our pages pen sketches of Chinese scenes and characters made by Buddy Key, Doyle Avant, and Alberto Santos and quotations of Chinese thinkers, from the proverbs of Confucius to the memorable words of the Missimo in speak- ing to the American people on our friendship with her country. For the future, when the Sons of Martin High School have returned from the battlefields of the world, and China is free of her barbaric invaders, we have a sincere hope that the unity brought about between ourselves and China, due to the danger of a common enemy, may not be dissolved. ! E[ iCAW N To Miss Lela McKinley, who is on ideal teacher, highly re- spected and appreciated by the entire student body, the Annual Staff has the honor and privilege of dedicating this 1944 Pitahaya. We rate her highly for her understanding ways and sympathetic attitude toward her pupils. Miss McKinley, born in Pearsall, Texas, and a graduate of the local high school, is now head of the Mathematics Department. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College, Columbia, Colo- rado, and Texas University where she received her B.A. and M.A. degrees. She majored in mathematics, history, and education, and minored in economics. She is a past president of the Alpha Nu Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma. While she teaches mathematics because she likes it. Miss McKinley ' s ambition is to have a class in which everybody knows enough to pass! I know this class better than any other Senior Class, for I have taught most of its members algebra, geometry, and trigo- nometry, stated Miss McKinley in reference to the Class of ' 44. It is an outstanding class, and I expect great achievements from its members. Martin, President of the Board, serves as Webb County ' s sheriff. He was educated at St. Edward ' s University. His hobby is ranching. The Board of School Trustees of the La- redo Independent School District is an elective body responsible to the people for the operation and maintenance of the pub- lic free schools of the City of Laredo. This board consists of seven members elected alternately every three years. Two are elected one year; two, the next; and three, the third year. Its membership and the years in which their terms expire are as fol- lows: J. C. Martin, President, 1945; M. S. Ryan, Vice-President, 1946; A. R. Moser, Secretary, 1945; B. G. Salinas, 1946; A. Vails, 1946; C. L Milton, 1944; L. Daiches, 1944. Meetings of the Board of School Trustees are held on the second Thursday of the month, and called meetings are held when the need arises. Its members function (1) through action taken as a Board at its meetings, (2) through the Superintendent of City Schools appointed by the Board as its executive officer, and (3) through its desig- nated agents acting by virtue of specific authority granted by the Board. The office of Superintendent of Schools is a statutory office created by the Legislature. It has certain duties under the law and certain responsibilities to the State Department of Education and the Federal government, as well as to the local Board of School Trus- tees. Thus it is that the selection of a Superintendent of Schools is one of the most important functions of the Board. An equally important function is the adoption of the annual budget prepared by the Superintendent setting up in detail the re- ceipts and expenditures of all money avail- able for the operation of the schools for the current school year. That the Board of School Trustees of the Laredo Independent School District has performed its duties well and faithfully is evidenced by the fact that its members are re-elected without opposition each time their terms expire. In fact they have all served from fifteen to thirty years each. This is believed to be a record in Texas. Mr. Wm. P. Galligan, Superintendent of Schools, attended Notre Dame, St. Edward ' s, and the University of Arkansas. HON, HUGH S. CLUCK, Mayor of Laredo and Bus. Mgr. of the schools. , MR. C L s Olga Rosenbcaim Reporter Sophie Rosenbaum Parliamentarian Bessie Gallagher Treasurer Bertha Prieto Historian Realizing the need for their services, the Courtesy Service Club has more than ever played an important part in all activities this year. First, it has been outstanding in its services at the Bond Booth m school where hundreds of dollars of stamps and bonds have been sold. At each class period, one of the members is present at the booth to sell these war bonds and stamps. Under the able supervision of their new sponsor, Mrs. Harry Andrews, the Courtesy Service Club has rendered their services at football games. Civic Music concerts, assemblies, registration, and other places where a school representative may be needed. At the beginning of the Fall Semester, the girls took a very active part in the Tuberculosis Drive and in the selling of poppies on Armistice Day. Seven members took part m a play presented at the tjSO on Christmas Eve. During the Fall Semester, the girls worked over 3500 hours in connection with club activities. The Courtesy Service Club was organized in 1934 to render service to Martin High School and to the citizens of Laredo, to promote a feeling of good fellowship and cooperation, and to stimulate higher ideals among our girls. Membership consists of girls selected for their dependability, ideals, character, sportsmanship, loyalty, and attitude towards their school, their work, and their teachers. Club membership is limited to twenty-four girls and only sophomore and junior girls may enter, though seniors and post- yraduates may continue their membership. Precision marching with smooth cadence sets off the traditional red, white, and blue uniforms to the best possible advantage. At every social event, not under the supervision of another organization, the Pep Squad takes an active part. Organized only two years ago for the purpose of rendering service wherever possible, this organization has made amazing strides under the sponsorship of its able director. Miss Ruth Young. The idea of rendering service was emphasized by the Pep Squad ' s participation in the Tuberculosis Drive and the selling of poppies on Armistice Day to aid the disabled war veterans. Homage to the Tigers was the underlying theme of the dance sponsored by the Pep Squad on January 20th. Another clever party is their sunrise breakfast held in March. Of these ten encounters, Coach R. W. Parker ' s Tigers came out on top in three, lost six, and tied one. Most important of all, they are no longer district doormats, having presented San Antonio Tech with this dubious honor. The team started out the season with ten returning lettermen and some squadmen. How- ever, they were handicapped by the fact thht there were very few substitutes available. Never once in any encounter, whether they were on the long or short end of the score, did the Bengals quit fighting. Although outweighed in every game, they managed to chalk up scores in six of them. LAREDO 12, BENAVIDES 13 Although outplaying their opponents, the Tigers were nosed out 13-12 by the strong Bena- FRANK LEYENDECKER Back vides Eagles, who managed to score twice in the last eight minutes of play. The Cats held a 12-point lead up to this time. Both Laredo scores came on line plunges made by Bobby Leary. LAREDO 7, BROWNSVILLE 7 Staging a sensational last-minute uprising of their own, which was cli- maxed by a spectacular scoring play, the Tigers were able to deadlock the game at 7-7, and consequently defeat the Brownsville Eagles via the penetra- tion route. Capitalizing on a break made possible by a blocked punt, Laredo took possession of the ball on the Eagle 20. A pass from Leary to Jack Magnon netted the Cats their lone tally. LAREDO 0, KERRVILLE 34 Making their 1943 district debut, the Martin High Tigers were soundly trounced by a Kerrville aggregation, 34-0. Scoring in the first few seconds of play, Tivy High ' s Antlers were never headed after that. LAREDO 0, JEFFERSON 48 Next game on the slate was with the district champion Jefferson Mustangs. The Ponies just had a bit too much speed and weight for the Cats and ran over them to the tune of 48-0, in a tilt that developed into a one-man show by flashy little 145-pound Perry Samuels. The lightning-fast halfback, who started out the season as a sub, accounted for no less than five Jefferson touchdowns against a reserve-shy Laredo eleven, which stood amazed while Samuels ran rough-shod through the line whenever and wherever he pleased. Hov ever, the Tigers displayed the traditional never-say-die spirit of previous Laredo teams, and never quit hustling throughout- the contest. BOBBY LEARY Back District Mention VIDAL SEPULVEDA Bock WAYDELL HUNTER Back DOMINGO ARECHIGA Back ALEX SANDOVAL End District Mention FRANCISCO VELASQUEZ Tackls LAREDO 0, AUSTIN 27 After taking a week ' s rest the Cats played host to last year ' s state champs, the Austin Maroons. The Bengals played an inspired game against the heavier, more experienced Capital City boys, who scored in every period except the second. Laredo outplayed the former state champions, who were befuddled many a time by tricky Laredo pass plays. All in all, the Bengals were able to gain more first downs than the visitors. Leary, Hunter, and Sepulveda stood out on the offensive for the Tigers, while Forrester, Allen, and Rogers shone for Austin. LESLIE SMITH Center LAREDO 13, S. A. TECH Spurred on by the hearty cheering of the stu- dent body, the Tigers established themselves emphatically as serious threats in coming games by upsetting the bewildered San Antonio Tech Buffs 13-0 at Shirley Field on Oct. 29. Both teams were battling hard, for to the loser would go the dubious distinction of being Dis- trict 15-AA doormats for 1943. Continually out- playing their guests the Cats were able to chalk up their first conference win in two years. The first Tiger score came on the first play of the second quarter when Waydell Hunter RAYMOND JOHNSON Guard ROBERTO GARCIA End PABLO MEJIA Tackle ALFRED FRICKE Guard BRUCE BUNN End knifed through right tackle, cut back to his left, and by exhibiting a sudden burst of speed outran the Tech second- ary to score standing up. The last score of the game was a result of a Leary line buck which netted one yard and a touchdown. The contest ended with the Bisons trying desperately to overtake the Ben- gals by throwing many long, inaccu- rate passes to well-covered receivers. LAREDO 7, CORPUS CHRIST! 52 A powerful Corpus Christi juggernaut rolled over the Martin High Tigers Nov. 5, handing the Cats their fourth district setback of the year, by a 52-7 score. From the outset it was apparent that the Bucs ' bone-shattering blocking and skillful combination of power and de- i| ception was just a bit too much for the lighter Tigers, who never ceased hust- ling even though the chips were stacked against them throughout. The Pirates scored in every quarter, I garnering 20 points in the first period, BILLY GOREE Tackle ANTONIO AGUILAR Tackle EVERETT CLARK Center and then coasting in to victory. Both teams used substitutes sparingly. The Laredo tally came in the last stanza. After advancing the ball to the Pirate 25-yard line on a concen- trated aerial attack, Frank Leyen- decker, second string quarterback at that stage of the season, tossed a pass to Domingo Arechiga, who lat- eraled to Warren Browning, who in turn went on to score. Arechiga plunged over the center of the heavy Corpus line for the extra point. LAREDO 41, CENTRAL CATHOLIC Featuring Domingo Arechiga and Waydell Hunter as the big guns on the offensive, Laredo chalked up its second win of the season Nov. 12, by trouncing an outclassed Central Catholic Button eleven 41-0 at Shir- ley Field. Held to 14 points in the first half, the Tigers turned on the steam in the last two periods over- DOYLE AVANT Guard BILL TAYLOR Tackle JUAN VILLAREAL End ERNESTO LINARES Back , i Wl••S DARIO HINOJOS S Guard a rapidly deteriorating Central Catholic team. Waydell Hunter bade high school a fancy farewell by accounting for three touchdowns and two extra points. Domingo Arechiga broke through for several dazzling runs, tallying two touchdowns, one a 40-yard punt return in the third period. The subs took to the field, and, led by the shifty running of Clifford Gray and Frank Ley- endecker, they drove downfield to the Button 10-yard line, from where they tallied on a pass, Leyendecker to Juan Villareal, to notch the count at 41-0. LAREDO 7, BRACKENRIDGE 53 Tiger stock sky-rocketed following their de- cisive trampling of Central Catholic, only to take a meteoric dip after their tilt with the strong Brackenridge Eagles. At first the teams seemed evenly matched, but the Birdmen turned on the heat all through the game to cop a 53-7 victory. In the second period, the Tigers managed to notch up their lone marker on a pass from Leary to Roberto Garcia. Due to transportation difficulties, the basketeers made but one trip all season — to San Antonio for the District 15-AA tournament on Feb. 10-12. In the meantime the Bengals tuned up for the dis- trict race by competing against top-notch teams from the L.A.A.F. and local high schools which formed the City League. Com- posed of 16 teams, the City League season lasted exactly one month. The Tigers broke even, managing to win 5 out of 10 games, while their little brothers, the B squad Kittens, regis- tered one win as compared to seven losses. In the first gome of the newly-formed City League, Laredo lost a heartbreaker to its cross-town rival, St. Joseph, in the last few seconds of play by a 25-24 score. Handicapped by the loss of two regulars via the foul route, the reserve-shy Cats could not cope with the strong finish put on by the resurgent Antlers. A few days later, however, the Tigers returned the compliment by downing the Academy boys in their home court by a 22-21 score. Displaying a sound defensive game coupled with some field goals at the right moments, the Cats proved to be too much for the slower Antlers. All in all, a total of four games were played LeJANDRO SANDOVAL 1 Guard II RICARDO ORTIZ Guard JOE CHANDLER Center ERNESTO CASTILLO Forward against St. Joseph, with the nod going to them by a three-to-one count. Probably reaching their peak in mid-season, the Tigers cap- tured six out of nme tilts at that stage of the campaign. Showing vast improvement from the beginning of the season, Martin High ' s cagers trounced a strong 1025th team from the L.A.A.F. 42-36, in an over-time contest. The Tigers ' fast break proved to be a valuable weapon since it served a two-fold purpose of tiring out the opposition as well as accounting for most of the Tiger scoring. Avenging a football beating at their hands, the Cats adminis- tered the Benavides Eagles a decisive 24-16 licking at the school gymnasium. The Eagles, who were still to become regional champions in their class, held the Bengals to a standstill for two periods. Employing a modified zone defense which confused their opponents, the Eagles used their height to advantage to hold the upper hand in the first half. However, the Cats changed their strategy in the fourth quarter and resorted to their ever- EDGARDO GONZALEZ Guard SpS aZOMJ reliable fast break to slip past the hustling Birdmen. From there on, the locals retained the initiative all through the game to finally win by a six-point margin. On February 10, the Tigers journeyed to San Antonio where they took part in the district tournament at Brackenridge gym. Drawing a bye in the first round, they advanced to the second round where they took on the tall San Antonio Tech Buffs. As it turned out, the Buffs weren ' t missing out on their few opportuni- ties at the basket and they were the holders of a 10-point lead at the start of the last period. It was then that Laredo started a rally that threatened to nose out the confident Bisons. With less than three minutes to play, Rodrigo de Llano, Cat center, hooped in five field goals in rapid succession to put the Tigers in a good position to slip past the fading Tech team. But the gun sounded a few seconds later to end the game. In the second game, the Jefferson Mustangs dealt the locals a crushing 35-7 defeat. With substitutes playing the majority of the contest for both teams, the Tigers couldn ' t connect with the hoop that afternoon. RODRIGO DE LLANO Center ARNALDO DICKINSON Forward DOYLE AVANT Guard BOB LEARY Guard WARREN BROWNINC Forward FRANK LEYENDECKER Guard Throughout the season, the team displayed a lot of hustle, good teamwork, and accurate basket-dunking in spots. Rodrigo de Llano paced the team in individual scoring, while Domingo Arechiga proved to be an important cog in the Bengal machine as he ' d continually dominate rebounds under the basket. Good ball-handling on the part of Frank Leyendecker, Doyle Avant, and Bob Leary accounted for many points, while Arnaldo Dickin- son ' s hustling was noticeable in all the games. The outlook for next year seems to be particularly bright, with quite a number of lettermen and squadmen reporting for service. Among those who are likely to return for basketball are the fol- lowing: Domingo Arechiga, Doyle Avant, Ricardo Ortiz, Alex Sandoval, Ernesto Castillo, Joe Chandler, and Warren Browning. As they have not yet had much competition in the form of meets, with the exception of the Border Olympics, it is difficult to speculate on the chances of this year ' s track team in coming contests. Since none of last year ' s lettermen are back this season, Coach Parker has not had much material to work with. However, some of the boys have shown signs of developing into potential point-makers. One of the most promising pros- pects is Hector Rocha. Although he failed to place in the Olympics, Hector has been coming along iM ' HECTOR ROCHA Promising Prospect fairly well in the daily practices. Last year the Tigers won fifth place in the Regional Meet. John Vails, crack hurdler, was the only Laredo representative at the state meet held in Austin, where he made a fair showing. This year, the thinlyclads will journey to Corpus to compete in the Area Meet on April 15; from there the ones that gualify will go to Kingsville for the Regional Meet. Barring unforeseen accidents, the Cats should be able to garner sev- eral second and third places in these meets. C. Gray, Sandoval, Ortiz SPRINTERS TRACK 5QUAD Santos, Dickinson, Avant Wl 440- YD.
