On these pages We have tried to show how all the students of Martin High School help in the war effort-everything from collecting scrap iron, buying War stamps, and such insignificant sacrifices as to going to dances on buses, walking long blocks to school, and being glad we have a school to Walk tp-a school as beautiful as Mar- tin High. We have lent some of our beloved teachers to the Army-Prof. de la Garza, Mrs. Barry, Mr. Vela, and Mr. Morlan, and we have not complained, just as Martin High herself is giving her sons whom she has disciplined and nurtured in body and in mind, to the cause of our democratic Way of life. Martin High School is proud of her good soldiers already in the field and of those being prepared for the future rank, and we pray for a safe return as we pray for the final victory. f0l77Z1 Because he has done his best to promote an interest in good clean football, and because ot his five years ot fine work as Tiger coach and boys' friend which have brought him the admiration of every student and the love of every member of the team, we dedicate this 1943 La Pitahaya to Mr. Iohn C. Green. Born in Valentine, Texas, on Oct. 5, 1912, Iohn Green moved to Sanderson Where he grew up and finished high school. Then he went to Schreiner Institute and to New Mexico A. 61 M., worked for two years, then Went back to college at Sul Ross State Teachers College. He took his B.S. degree, majoring in physical education, in 1936. He was outstanding in athletics in all colleges he attended, so when he came to Laredo in 1935 he became director of athletics first in Christen School, and two years later at Martin High. To one who is a friend more than a teacher and who is loved by all who know and have worked with her, this Annual is sincerely dedicated. Born in Weatherford. When? Oh, no, that's a military secret. Went to Ward- Belmont and back to Weatherford lunior College. Took degree in Speech at Texas State College for Women. Spent one summer in Europe. Taught private classes in Speech. Later, he attended Notre Dame University, where he received his bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1940. He taught at Qld High School, but was transferred to Martin High School at the beginning of this year. Here he taught mechanical drawing, mathematics, and science. The faculty and the student body of Martin High School deeply regret the loss of this beloved teacher who was so suddenly taken from us. He was loved by everyone, for he had a charming per- sonality and a splendid character. We shall always cherish his memory. -Alejandro R. Garcia. ,I DORIS KARABANOFF 1922-1942 Doris was beloved of her classmates and te h b t ac ers ecause o her friendly disposition and her devotion to the school. She was a member of the Ellen H. His hobby is politics. Mr. Wm. P. Galligan, Superintendent of schools, attended Notre Dame, St. Edward's, and the University of Arkansas from which he took his LL.B. Degree. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. His hobby is boys. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE LAREDO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT The Board of Trustees of the Laredo Independent School District is composed of seven members elected by the qualified voters of the city at elections held on the first Saturday of April of each year. One year two members are elected, the next year two more, and the following year three are elected. Each member serves for the term of three years. In that manner, at no time will the terms of a majority of the Board expire. The present members of the Board of Trustees and the expiration of their terms are as follows: I. C. Martin, President, term expires l945y A. R. Moser, Secretary, term expires . l945g M. S. Ryan, Vice-President, term expires l9435 B. G. Salinas, term expires 1943: Antonio Valls, term expires l943p C. L. Milton, term expires IQ44, and L. Daiches, term expires IQ44. As the Board of Directors of a large corporation, the Board of Trustees appoints the Superintendent, who is the executive manager of the business, and they also elect the teaching personnel and administrative staff to assist in maintaining an efficient system of schools. At present the Superintendent is William P. Galligan, who is now completing his fifteenth year in that position. Hugh S. Cluck is Business Man- ager and at the present time is serving as Mayor of the City of Laredo. Ernest A. Leyendecker is Auditor. Laredo is indeed fortunate in having men of the type of ability of those who com- pose its Board of School Trustees. They are providing schools for the children of Laredo that measure up to every standard set by the State Department of Education. That the people of Laredo believe they are doing a good job is evidenced by the fact hat there has been no change in the personnel of the Board for many years, each member having been drafted to succeed himself each time his term expires. Such is the remark of Manuel Arechiga, most valuable Tiger for this year, when asked his opinion regarding the Bengal football squad. lt was our determination and our fighting spirit that won in the long run, he continues, and anybody who says' that forming a squad composed of six lettermen, a bunch of B squad gridsters, and a group of inexperienced, untrained players who had never before in their lives carried a pigskin into a fighting machine isn't much work, he just lacks a little sense. However, despite numerous injuries which hampered the squad all season, it was formed into a strong unit and it was the worry of many of the outstanding 15th District teams. In Manuel's own words we continue this year's gridiron review. t 2 .. ........ Fernando De Llano and Iohnny Valls snatched two of Bob Leary's passes to score Laredo's first points of the season. Chapa, Unicorn back, effected the only New Braunfel's touch- down. LAREDO 6, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0 Our first victory inspired us greatly, and when we met Central Catholic's Buttons here at Shirley Field, their goose was cooked. The only score of the game was made on a pass 'from Iack Magnon to Waydell Hunter. Central Catholic's team was built about Gonzalez who could punt, pass and run superbly. LAREDO 0, KERRVILLE 12 lt was during our third undertaking, and our first district tilt that we suffered a slight setback, but it wasn't as bad as it had been anticipated. Kerrvil1e's boys made use of two breaks, and Pickins and Weir scored the two Antler touchdowns. Everybody expected the Kerrville machine to trample us as easily as a cat does a mouse, but things turned out to be very different, because the Antler land and air power which was expected to baffle us into submission was minimized by our determined Bengal line. Our defensive and offensive plays clicked outstandingly, but I guess it was just not in us to win that game. Although outweighed twelve pounds to the man, we put up quite a fight for the spoils and made use of the breaks. But Iefferson's speedy backs proved superior to anything we had on the field, and as a result they won 62-6. A 25-yard pass from Bob Leary to George Vela gave us our only six points. LAREDO 0, T. M. We got into the game against the Maroons with a grim determination to give them a good fight, and although the score turned out to be 47 to 0 in our host's favor, those Capital City football fans saw us battle against heavier adversaries without letdown. The Maroon team as a whole shared all honors. Quinn, Lee, Davis, Kirchner, Allen, Bryan, and Forester accounted for the seven touchdowns of the game. Three times during the first half of the game we knocked at Tech's goal posts, yet always failing to score for the lack of a yard or two. In the second half the Buffs, led by Felix Garza, came back strong and scored three touchdowns to win the game. LAREDO 0, CORPUS CHRISTI 47 Corpus Christi's Buccaneers were the last to invade our lair, and it was quite a clean and beautifully played scrap. Our visitors won 47-O. Parker, Wallace, Clark, and Wilkinson were the sparkplugs of the whole Buc team. A large delegation of Pirate boosters accompanied their team to this game. L -fm' ,.tq .. . LAREDO O, BRACKENRIDGE 20 Our last district tussle with the Brackenridge Eagles at Alamo Stadium proved to be a hotly contested game. We showed a large crowd of San Antonio football fans what that good old Laredo spirit could do when we kept the Eagles from scoring more than 20 points against us. This game was the best we played throughout the whole season, and our fighting machine worried the Birdmen ex- tensively throughout the game. Three errors, however, caused us to lose it. Matched against superior odds, they showed that they could battle and come out the win- ners. This year's squad with only seven lettermen cmd a bunch of former B squad players was turned into a strong team after hard weeks of practice. Although short of stature with- the exception of a few, the boys showed by their scores that they possessed ability to connect with the basket. -' 411-he 4 f' M- , ., 7 A, I f 1. After hard contested games were played, the 796th Military Police of For Mclntosh won the championship, followed by our fighting Bengal quint. Comprising the res of the local cage family were St. Ioseph's Ant lers, Holding Institute, the l86Uth Service Unit and the 56th Cavalry boys. The strongest contenders for the City Crow: besides the Tigers were the 796th M. P. Bn five, and St. Ioseph's Antlers. St. Ioseph, how ever, proved easy picking for the Cats, wh: , ,--, S CAGE BRIEF S-Contld won both scraps by major scores. The rest of the games with the other Laredo cage teams also offered slight difficulty for the Tiger quint, but when time came for the 796th M. P. five to offer their resistance, the tables registered something different for our Bengal lads. They lost on both encounters with the Police boys, who were fast on their feet and possessed an admirable coordination. Coach Green's boys, however, did not show so badly at the 15-AA District Basketball tour- nament held at the Brackenridge Gym in Scm Antonio. They placed fourth in the district standings, and obtained sweet revenge when they defeated the Corpus Christi Bucs by a 20- 17 score. Brackenridge's Birdmen and Thomas Iefferson's cagesters accounted for the Cats being thrown out of the race when they beat the Tigers by 46-20 and 43-27 scores. Austin's Maroons were the final winners of the 15-AA District Cage Crown, and they repeated their last year's record. There are four basketball lettermen expected to come back next season. Among them are Rodrigo De Llano, Domingo Arechiga, Iesus Rodriguez, and most probably Bob Leary. At the Heart's Delight Tournament the Laredo tennis players did amazingly well against the cream f th o e South Texas tennis players.
