We cannot forget the seriousness of faces, the faces of students who had been shocked out of their usual gaiety or nonchalance by the news of Pearl Harbor when school convened on that gray mom'- ing of December eighth. Nor can we forget the memorable words of President Roosevelt when he Congress to declare that a state of war existed between our great country and Iapan: Always, will we remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to over- come this premeditated invasion, the American people will in their righteous might win through to absolute victory. i t f ' ww Perhaps someday after the chaos is over, and there is peace-how beautiful a word-you who have served your country will glance at these pages. You will have forgotten how you grumloled o' ver your studies: you will remember how carefree and happy you were, and it will seem as a vista into heaven or a land of long dead dreams. , l It is fitting ands proper that our art theme be National Defense in this, our book of nineteen forty-twot Q71 i' E gifts: 517 s -0. MARTIN President ot the Board We believe that the idea of liberty is as strong as life and even death, as invincible as truth, as deathless as lhe indestructible God wha gave it. We also have faith that when the las! tyranny of this world shall have perished on the batllehelrl of human rights, when the las! rlespotie dictator has been rlelhrorzed, tha! the tattered and lnrn ensigns of the free peoples of every continent shall be proudly unfurled and rijzple gallantly in the purer breezes of a liner and better world. For that faith zue are now fighting, and shall continue to fight until the full and hnal virtory .shall have been achieved. From Mr. Galliqan's speech to the student body on December 15, 1941. The Board of Trustees of the Laredo Inde- pendent School District is composed ot seven members elected by the qualified voters of the city at elections held on the first Saturday ot April of each year. One year two members are elected, the next year two more, and the following year three are elected. Each member serves for the term of three years. ln that manner, at no time will the terms oi a majority of the Board expire. The present members of the Board ot Trustees and the expiration ot their terms are as follows: MR. WILLIAM P. GALLIGAN Superintendent I. C. Martin, President, term expires 19425 A. R. Moser, Secretary, term expires 1942, M. S. Ryan, Vice-President, term expires 19437 B. G. Salinas, term expires 19435 Antonio Valls, term expires 1943: C. L. Milton, term expires 1944, and L. Daiches, term expires 1944. As the Board of Directors of a large corporation, the Board of Trustees appoints the Superintendent, who is the executive manager of the business: and they also elect the teaching personnel and administrative staff to assist in maintaining an efficient system of schools. At present the Superintendent is William P. Galligan, who is now com- pleting his fourteenth year in that position. Hugh S. Cluck is Business Manager and at the present time is serving as Mayor of the City of Laredo. Ernest A. Leyendecker is Auditor. Laredo is indeed fortunate in having men of the type of ability of those who compose its Board of School Trustees. They are providing schools for the children of Laredo that measure up to every standard set by the State Department of Education. That the people of Laredo believe they are doing a good job is evidenced by the fact that there has been no change in the personnel of the Board for several years, each member having been drafted to succeed himself each time his term expires. During our conversation on the way there, she informed me that Lydia and Hortencia Bernal are almost finished with their Ph.D.'s and that Naomi Barrera is now quite an authority on English grammar. It was really startling to find that C. B. Sills and Morgan Bondy have become the photographers for LIFE magazine. We had the radio on in the car so we could listen to the Frances Torchin Hour of Charm. Finally we reached the theatre. The Funniest People on Earth was playing, co-starring losie Lafon, Bobra Mapus, and Red Swisherg Brenda Davis and Cobina Brady were also in the picture. In the news there was an interview of Lola Bunn, who has just finished her fourth season as star of the Metropolitan Opera. Eleanor Peters, sweet little housewife, was at the show with Nona Hunt, who is society editor of the Laredo Times Nona told me that she had just received a letter from Curly Kunz, wrestling champion of the world. After the show we went out to the night club where I was quite astonished to find Bill Mims and his all-girl orchestra furnishing the music. They're only my accompanistsf' says Mr. Mims. Emilio and Delia Davila own the club and they claim that it is an up-and-coming business. Ed Mims and Bill Iohnson were there-it seems they're still trying to date each new crop of freshman girls. Betty Io Neel has just returned from her fifth trip around the world- this time by scooter-car. She told me that she saw loe Baltzar in Russia and Dee Beckelhymer, Navy nurse, was in China. In England she saw Betty lean Reuthinger and Marjie Spear who were there with their own stock company. Rodolfo Ayala, world famous orator, told me that both William Thomey and lose Maria Villarreal are busy on their books. Both books are titled, Why I Am c Great Man. Inez Sanchez, Martin Iaime, and Carlos Meza were there in their uniforms: they're all Army fliers, you know. Next morning we went shopping in Laredo's big department store, owned by Sergio Zuniga and Arnulfo Zamora and managed by Elsie Watson. We saw lulieta Farias and Pauline Gurwitz. Pauline -is cleaning out Laredo's slums while lulieta is financing the enter- prise with her many millions. We went out to dear old Martin I-Iigh School where Carlos Bazan is principal and Slapsy Brady is still a senior. Tommy Leary, with Milton Hatch and Charles Rives as assistants, is coaching the Tigers in their third year of championship football. The tennis coach is Nadine Clemons and I was surprised to find that the old man on the sidelines was R. A. de la Garza. Gladys Goodwin was reading a magazine while her little students were copying notes off the board and writing some original ones. Lasker O'Keefe was inviting Ferdy Pena, Civics teacher, into the H. E. lab for a spot of tea. Dr. Abrego, the school physi- cian, was carefully inspecting the tongues of each little boy and girl. I asked him why he was doing so and he replied that he Wasn't quite sure, but he thought it was to see if they had been skipping school. Presently I smelled cigar smoke, and the custodian of the school appeared from around a corner. I-le was flirting with all the girls and passing out chocolate Candy-it was Poppa Dick Leyendecker. While at the State Contest last year, the band received more honors than any other band. First divisions were made by the following: A. Alarcon, cornetp I. LaKous, comet: E. Roll- man, oboe: H. The band made their debut at a football game this year wearing their new colorful uniforms. Some of the most difficult and startling maneuvers ever witnessed by Laredo football fans were performed. One of the stunts which drew much favorable comment from the spectators was the formation of the V . . . - for victory. Again the band won the audiences applause when they formed the Alamo while playing On the Alamo. These stunts were made more effective because their outline was formed with small lights attached to each individuals cap. The trips made by the band during the past year were very successful. They attended Band Day at Austin where they were guests of the University together with some seventy-five other bands. Having attended the festival at Pearsall, they competed in the marching contest, in which they won first place. The band also went to San Antonio for the Laredo-Iefferson game. , The band played for the meeting sponsored by the Civilian Defense Council and took part in the Civilian Defense Parade and the Washington's Birthday celebration parade. In its present series this is the sixth and probably last for a number of years to come. This year's book promises to be a success from a financial point of view, for the business staff contracted for S500 worth of advertising before the first of December. A special feature of this year's annual is the cover. It is a natural color picture and is the first of its kind for La Pitahaya. The picture was difficult to color and had to be taken four times before a satisfactory one was made. Another new feature is the different theme carried out in the club section. Not only formal pictures were taken, but informal ones were also taken. Instead of using separate pictures for the officers of the clubs, informal group pictures were taken of them. LAREDO 0, CORPUS CHRISTI 66 Opening the season in Corpus Christi, the Bengals were swamped by a 66-0 score. The team put up a valiant fight, but it could not cope with the strong Buccaneer aggregation. Clark's brilliant broken field running, and Haverstock's terrific line plunges proved to be too much for the Tigers. LAREDO 0, NEW BRAUNFELS 19 New Braunfels came along the next week and defeated the Bengals 19-0. The game was close all the way. The Unicorns got the breaks, and the Tiger aerial attack was stopped cold by a drenching rain. Laredo outgained the visitors on the ground and showed increased power. LAREDO 0, IEFFERSON 50 Speed, sufficient to score eight touchdowns, gave Thomas Jefferson her first district win and left the Tigers without a victory at this Dave Leal Guard stage of the season. The Mustangs countered a 50-0 score. The game was played at Alamo Stadium in San An- tonio. LAREDO 6, TECH 19 The Tigers lost to Tech 19-6 in their next game. Iimmy Dukes of Tech battered the Tiger line all night and knifed through for considerable gains. The Bengals scored their first touch- down of the season on a 30-yard pass from lack Magnon to lulio Naranio. This score was the first ever made by a Bengal in Alamo Stadium. Since the erection of the stadium the Tigers had been unable to score in it. Tommy Leary's outstanding play kept the Cats in the fray. Hart carried over on an end sweep. V Y. . W ,... LAREDO 0, T. M. I. 6 Laredo kept on hammering at the weak T. M. I.' line, but tailed to make any headway, as they would bog down every time they came within scoring distance. Both teams fought doggedly up and down the field. Laredo opened up with a passing attack that almost brought the necessary points. The gun ended the game as they were knock- ing on the orange and black goal line. This game marked the opening of rivalry between the two schools. Frank Saldana Back Bat Corfigan Tackle George Gray Back LAREDO 6, BRACKENRIDGE 33 Brackenridge's mighty Eagles came to Laredo and met a fighting bunch of Tigers. Laredo's passing attack had the birds worried, as they threatened to score early in the game. Harcourt sparked the Eagles to a 33-6 victory, with his accu- rate passing. Wee Pablo Rodriguez intercepted a pass late in the game and ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
