As we look back on our high school years, it’s safe to say they went by fairly quickly. But we have countless memories to remember it all by. We’ve been a class large in size and with accomplishments to match. We entered the doors as freshmen with varied ideas of what life as a high school student was. Soon we grew accustomed to the scheduling and locker combinations, and found the transition to be not so difficult after all. Having an extraordinarily large class (about 160 students) gave us an advantage by having a louder voice than past freshman classes. Sophomore year came, and it gave us a new standing in school — not being classified as “little freshmen” any longer. While we basked in the glory of moving on to tenth grade, we were hit with the fact that there was fund-raising to be done. The prom was only a year away, and our first year produced close to nothing in terms of money. That fall, we had a dance at “Nightlights” to give us a push in the right direction. But after that only minor fund-raisers were put on, the last of which was our infamous raffle of a prom ticket. As juniors, we were already being dubbed as one of the worst fund-raising classes, so it was time to get moving. The start was our raffle of a hand knit sweater by Judy Mayhew, and we took off from there. With Ben Aldrich-Moodie as our president we held various activities. We sold carnations at Christmas, and concessions at football and basketball games. A police sponsored Halloween Dance and Coffeehouse evening were results of our work. But the major contributor of our funds were the two dances we held at the Hot Tin Roof. Spring arrived, and “Always and Forever” proved to be a memorable prom. Jen deBettencourt chaired the prom committee and also was on the prom court, of which Elise Bernier was queen. We were finally seniors, and were wondering where the time had gone, not to mention where a section of our class had gone. We’d gone from an enormous class to a normal-sized one, due to a very large number of transfers to private schools and also those who had moved from the island. Our friends who were a part of our high school year, though not graduating with us, will be remembered. Our senior year involved searching for colleges, fulfilling graduation requirements, waiting for that Sunday in June, and trying to enjoy our last and most special year. We’ve been a special class who wouldn’t have made it without the incredible help of Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Harris, our advisers. I could write pages telling of their contributions and caring. They guided us through the thick and thin of it all. The ultimate thank-you goes out to those two. The class of 1988 now goes its separate ways in life, but our four years here were most memorable. Hopefully they have prepared us for bigger and better things. Academically, athletically, musically and socially — we succeeded in all. Though we face much change and transition while here, we’ve come through with a new appreciation for togetherness. It would make him so happy for hours after. Jeff enjoyed driving and hunting, so very much. And when it came to building he had a special touch. Jeff did so much, for so many. Enemies — he didn’t have any. He’d go so far to help others out. And not once would he think to give it a doubt. From what I hear he never dared. To show how much he really cared. But his friends and family did not fear, For the y knew to his heart he held them near. Jeff will be missed by so many who thought of him as their brother. So to get through this we must all help each other. We must accept the fact that he’s gone, And let each of our lives continue on. We must give one another support, strength, and encouragement. Or a shoulder to lean on may need to be leant.
