More than 20 worshippers were killed by machine-gun fire. Upon the arrival of the police, the terrorists killed themselves. President Reagan responded to the monstrous brutality” of Libyan-backed terrorist acts with an Air Force and Navy jet attack in April. Pictured here is the Libyan Naval Academy, one of five targets, located in a Tripoli suburb. Crack, as we know it here on the East Coast, became a publically known phenomenon, in the past year. Media hype surrounded this refined, smokeable form of cocaine, perhaps the most addictive drug ever available on the streets of America. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and President Reagan met in Reykjavik, Iceland, for a two-day summit in October. Oespite both sides ' interest in arms reduction, and a hopeful mood, the testing of US. S.D.I, weaponry formed a stumbling block, over which neither side would pass. V , In July of 1986, Britain ' s Prince Andrew, fourth in line of succession to the throne, and the Queen ' s second son, married Sarah Ferguson at Westminster Abbey. The pomp and glory were typical of Britain ' s 920-year old monarchy. Also in July, Caroline Kennedy married Edwin Schlossberg, a New York businessman and artist, in Hyannis Port, Mass. Kennedy was said to have captured America’s heart as a little girl romping through the White House.” 4 Friendship is a footbridge joining isolated bodies together allowing free and confident passage, sharing what each has, and adding to the sum of each. As historian, I am responsible for keeping records of the progression of the class of 1987. As the beloved four years of high school flash before our sometimes closed eyes (from studying so hard for midyears) certain events do not go unseen. Because we were freshmen, elections had to be held. As knocking knees and newly found speech impediments made their way to the front of the Freshman Class, we were able to fill each position for class officers. As soon as we got ac¬ quainted we organized our first car wash — bake sale which, held on the day of the Nantucket game, was a surprising success. As we matured so did our fund raising techniques. Although the definition for “sophomore” is “intellectually immature” even the seniors were a little green over our ham and beans. Oh, they weren’t sick from them, it’s the money that we made during our ham and bean supper that made them jealous. It’s junior year now and fund raising is still the name of the game. We ' re old pros, or at least we thought so until it came to the auction. It’s a good thing we had help from an old pro — oops! Let’s just say Trippy Barnes helped us out a great deal as the auctioneer and if it weren’t for his persuasive ways of auctioning (we’re lucky people didn’t want us as an extra bonus) we wouldn’t have made as much as we did. Two people that cannot be forgotten are Mr. and Mrs. Ross, who have sat with us after school many times and listened to our zany ideas for fundraising. Having the Ross’ for class advisors was certainly to our benefit. Because Mr. Ross is always the director of our school plays we were always granted concessions. And thanks to Mrs. Ross we had a place to cool, heat, and store them. Working the grill and behind the bar of the concession stand out at the football field was not always a thrill, except for November 23, 1985. While people munch¬ ed our hamburgers and downed some soda, they cheered the Vineyard on to vic¬ tory over the Nantucket Whalers 12-2. The Vineyard hadn’t beaten Nantucket in eight years. “These Dreams” was a success with a lovely queen Melissa Reynolds and her court: Shawna Duprey, Lisa Hayden, Melissa Montesion, Eve Domont, Jessica Culleny, and Wendy Nunes. It was a beautiful night and a great time was had by all at the Harborview Hotel. During our four year visit many of the students have had a chance to travel to places all over the world. Band and Minnesingers made it to Middleton, Nova Scotia besides New Hampshire and New York. The Minnesingers alone spent two weeks in Germany. And during April vacation, many students are Soviet Union bound. We will not forget members of our class that have gone off to different schools. Jodi Bailey, Jocelyn Schaeffer, Tori Strimel, and Wendy Sutton won’t be graduating with us, but will be in our memories for a long time. As our stay here at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School must come to an end, the special friendships and memories will always be with us. “These are the times to remember, ’cause they will not last forever.
