The Noepe Chapter of the National Honor Society maintains these four standards: Leadership, Academics, Character, and Service to the school and to the community. The NHS has been involved in many programs this year, such as the world programs Save the Whales and Save the Children , in which we are sponsoring an American Indian child, which we will continue to do until she is eighteen. For all our activities, charities, and scholarships, we have involved ourselves in many fund-raising activities. We have tried to establish a real tradition in our school, and we hope that the NHS will continue to grow and become a very influential group in the school. In order to gain better representation of the student body, a new format was introduced this year concerning student government. The Student Council was expanded to include six teachers and twenty-eight students. The Student Faculty Council deals with the problems and needs of students and administrators, organizes class elections, reviewed, introduced and approved matters dealing with school policy, and formed a constitution. Through parliamentary procedure, meetings were well-organized and efficient. The 1980 Student Faculty Council has worked very hard in this year of transition, and we hope that future Councils will take an active role in voicing student opinions. The MVRHS American Field Service Club has been more active than ever, being a club that brings young people and families together in the interest of world peace. Our fifty members have welcomed Grete Wikstrand from Norway, and a returnee from Kenya, Sarah Lou Norton. Our Co-President, Jody Coker, has left us for a year to live in Peru. Last year ' s Grolsch Brothers dance helped us to have an exchange with Wilton, Connecticut, and our profits from candy cane and carnation sales will send twelve students to New Jersey. The Hiking Club originated last year with the help of Mr. Kindzia, Mr. Nute, and Mr. Didato. We started out with twelve members, who had little experience in mountain climbing, and this year we now number twenty members. The typical backpacking trip would involve journeying into a wilderness area, leaving behind all the comforts we ' re so accustomed to — a person can only rely on his skills and the provisions he can comfortably carry on his back. Our first major trip was a week ' s trek to Mount Washington in June, 1979, followed by a trip in November, 1979, to Carter ' s Notch, near Wildcat Mountain. The club is looking forward to its trip to the mountains this spring. Our school is very fortunate to have a club of this type, and I hope that the Hiking Club will continue to be just as active in the future. Not many people realize the amount of work that goes into preparing each year ' s Vineyarder. The planning, laying out, cropping, organizing and hard work are all worth it in the end, however. Hilton. 43 45 ‘S T- W Sweet childish days that were as long As twenty days are now. 47 SENIORS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Julie Flanders Class Historian The Class of 1980 started four short years ago and yet it seemed like it would take forever to become big Seniors. Remember when opening your locker was a major problem, never mind finding Room 2A! Freshman year was, of course, full of the usual fears and nerves, but after getting into it, we found that it wasn ' t too bad after all. Getting involved in various school activities and classes helped to broaden our view of high school life. Class officers were David Grain, Lisa Merrill, Bonnie Cumming, Lyette Kheary, and Philippa Rollins; Mr. and Miss Freshman Class were Sam DelValle and Patty Grant. Do you remember going to your first Phillipps ' party? By our Sophomore year, we were more acclimated to high school. Class officers were Katie Ferro, Bob White, Lyette Kheary, Lori Dorsey, and Julie Flanders; Mister and Miss Sophomore Class were Gery Conover and Judy Flanders. It was a quiet year, and we enjoyed ourselves before taking on the responsibilities of being Upperclassmen. We had our first taste of Miss Higgins, and use of the gym (finally!). And who could forget Cheltenham? Junior year came quickly, and it was time for the Prom ... but disaster struck! The Year of the Asbestos Crisis was at hand. Flow could we ever go to Tisbury Junior High and contend with two-inch high desks, Band in a 4 ' X4 ' sq. room, or eating lunch at 3:00? We somehow managed to raise money from car washes, a Flea Market booth, a Yard Sale and bake sales to put our prom, Springtime Magic on and make it a success. Our Prom Queen was Tami Conroy, and her court was Julia Trebby, Jackie Smith, Beth Kanagy, Tania Koch, Patty Nichols, and Sally Habekost. Class officers were Annette Anthony, Jamie Alley, Susan Tierney, Jennifer Enos, and Julie Flanders; Mr. and Miss Junior Class were John Keene and Pam Gardner. Senior year, what we ' ve been waiting for, has been full of school activities, parties, sports, skating, raising money for a Senior Banquet, and trying to figure out where all the time went to (and still trying to figure out Duzza).
