Sfudent Council The Student Council, after early organization problems due to the lack of an advisor, arranged school elections and helped make new adjustments in school policy. The council experienced further conflicts with the switchover to the Tisbury School, but finally united to plan various fund raising events to provide a scholarship for a deserving senior. Due to the unstable conditions surrounding this year ' s council, participation was not as successful as expected, but we hope that future M students will take the initiative to become involved in their school. Enrollment is predicated on academic achievement, service to the school and community, character, and demonstration of leadership qualities. Members are chosen under advisement of a faculty council. The object of this organization is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, and to encourage the development of character in all students. Activities during this year included a formal Induction Dinner, contributions to the community welfare, and educational field trips. We had a good-sized club of 40 members, all of whom have entertained our guest from West Germany, Ilka Schwabe. Our fleamarket and carwash were a great success. Our carnation sales were up 200% over last year, and the profits sent ten of our members to Belfast, Maine, for a week. Also, we had our Co-President, Sarah Norton, travel as an A.F.S. exchange student to Kenya, Africa. I would like to thank this year ' s club members and encourage other students to join next year. Yearbook Staff When I took on this job in November of 77, I had a feeling it would be quite difficult. And so it has been, but with the help of a few dedicated members of this committee, we ' ve managed to put together what we hope is a well-made book. Many thanks go to Mrs. Jackie Baer, who put up with all of my various photographic requests, and without whom this book would not have been possible. Hiking Club The hiking club, in its first year of existence, has set out to develop a keen awareness of nature and the ecology, both on and off the Island; an understanding of self-sufficiency; and the development of working in a community in the out of doors. Designs for the year include several on-lsland trips, a possible ski outing, and a five day hiking trip to Mount Washington in New Hampshire in June. Typically, a backpacking trip would involve journeying into a wilderness area leaving behind all the comforts we ' re so accustomed to — a person can only rely on his skills and the provisions he can comfortably carry on his back. Next year we will begin a new stage of life, be it college or pursuing a career. When the new freshmen of 1975 first entered the doors of M.V.R.H.S., there was a considerable amount of mixed emotions. Our minds slowly began to accept the fact that ' this is high school ' , even though, for the most part, our hearts were still back in our individual elementary schools. Sports, commit¬ tees, and other extracurricular activities brought the talented people into perspective, and the upper classmen appeared not so fierce as the many legends had painted them. One particular activity brought all of us together — the class meetings. Our first meeting unified us while we discussed money making schemes. The Linden tree became the focal point for the first of many somewhat successful bakesales. When our freshman year had finally been completed, many sighed relief and knew the worst was over. No one could call us dumb little freshmen anymore. Our sophomore year was easily 10 degrees warmer than our first had been. We had one year under our belts and only three to go. It was during this year that we began to broaden our activities, which ranged from fall sports to a springtime trip to France. Academically, though, this, our second year, proved to be a slump. Also, we just couldn ' t seem to throw the title of being little yet. Not until our junior year. Even though there was a bit of confusion as to what exactly a junior was supposed to be, we did con¬ sider ourselves upper classmen . Although our class advisors had had a hard time organizing us through¬ out the years, this particular one proved to be the biggest nightmare so far. Here it was, time to plan the Prom, and our bankbook wasn ' t exactly bursting. Along with the money situation there came the guestion of the type of Prom we ' d like to have. The growing disco craze presented arguments as to what kind of music we would be dancing to. Thanks to the concentrated forces of a few juniors, we managed to swing a successful event. Our third year was one that just about everyone enjoyed. We had finally begun to enter the ranks of adults. Now we are seniors and the continuing pressures of college applications has become a haunting situa¬ tion. We have experienced, and are still experiencin g, wild and crazy parties, transient romances, and frequent trips off our little island. (We ' re reading up on the dangers of asbestos as well!) It is proving to be as interesting as last year as it must prove for seniors of any era. High school has been unique. We ' ve learned from each other, and sometimes the learning experience has been a difficult situation. Now all we have left is to wait for that joyous June day and the lives we shall all seek out. Life is always interesting when you have a purpose and live in its fulfillment. LEISA AYN VOLZ Leslie ' s Pharmacy Vineyard Haven 82 In Memory The Lisa I remember was a little girl walking down the street kicking autumn leaves with her feet just enjoying the day — on her way to wherever little girls go to play. The Lisa I remember was a little girl picking up a dead bird and carrying it to the grass, for its final resting place. The Lisa I remember was furious with her brother for teasing her on a day when she didn ' t need to be teased. The Lisa I remember was proud of that same little brother and applauded more vigorously than anyone else for his singing. The Lisa I remember held her little sister by the hand and helped her put makeup on for a performance. The Li sa I remember waved as she jogged down the path. The Lisa I remember waved to me outside of Dr. Finkelstein ' s lasf summer. . . and dropped the bag she was carrying. She and her friend couldn ' t stop laughing. The Li sa I remember was very serious at times. Lisa Gail Arcudi May 20, 1961 — November 29, 1978 The Lisa I remember loved life — and like all teenagers, she was impatient to see it all, feel it all, know it all! The Li sa I remember will be in all things new and beautiful and exciting — in every rainbow, every dance, every young bird eager to try its wings Because there will always be music and dance and autumn leaves and snowfalls and soft breezes and giggling little girls, there will always be the memory of Lisa. — Judy Davey 83 84 85 Patrons Walter E.
