SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Remember us, the Class of 1978, not for our bulging bank account but for our better qualities — our unique sense of humor, our constant cyclic direction and support to our Alma Mater. It’s freshman year and we find ourselves at M.V.R.H.S. How long it seems we’ve waited to “grow up.” The attitude towards the freshman class isn’t always that positive, or didn’t you notice? Those senior pranks we had heard so much about didn’t scare us. It was a great feeling knowing you had a sibling around when the going got rough. Being the typical freshman class we weren’t concerned about much of anything. We did organize long enough to elect officers and Mr. and Miss Freshman class. Richard Ulsamer became our president after Louis Hilton resigned ; Brad Wong held the vice president spot; Corinne Dorsey was secretary; Sue Leonard became treasurer; and historian was Judy Dowley. Mr. and Miss Freshman class were Justine Lemenager and Scott Ewing. Due to lack of togetherness our two money making projects — a 10-speed bike raffle and a food sale — barely opened our account. Confidence. Something over the summer brought our class back as eager sophomores looking ahead to the tradi¬ tional Junior Prom. Class officers that year were Justine Lemenager, as president; Richard Leonard, vice president; Brad Wong, secretary; Sue Leonard, treasurer; and T. A. Brown, historian. Once again Scotty and Justine were voted to represent us as Mr. and Miss Sophomore class. To raise money quickly, we started out with the usual, “productive” food sale. Our class that year was forming into a hard-working, concerned group. Our direction and purpose allowed us to hold a W.R.K.O. dance with Bill Rossi, conduct candy sales, sell Dairy Queen coupons and sell soda at the Street Fair in Tisbury. 44 Sponsored by R. M. Packer Co., Inc. Vineyard Haven As Juniors we finally cracked down and decided to have the best Prom ever. It’s doubtful that we’ll forget the serious time and effort put out by our committee. Our Prom, entitled “Sunshine of My Life,” finally arrived. A creative mural for our processional, “Stairway to Heaven, was painted by John Tripp. It highlighted the Queen’s platform which the Junior guys neatly constructed. Justine Lemenager was crowned our queen and Richard Leonard escorted her. Jus¬ tine’s court was composed of Monique Clermont, Lisa Keene, Donna Kirby, Betsy Lucas, and Dona Mazza. There were laughs accompanying the nervousness and displaying of tuxes, too. Who spiked the punch? We won’t forget that! Ann Serpa was elected our Miss Junior Class and Scott “Scoop” Ewing, back by popular demand, was our Mr. Junior Class. With Matt Ferro, president; Richard Leonard, our vice president; Brad Wong, secretary; Sue Leonard, treasurer; and T. A. Brown, historian, we molded into a fantastic group. Money that year wasn’t much of a problem. We held raffles, sales, W.R.K.O. dances, and M.V.R.H.S.’s first “Gong Show’ , organized by Mark Campos and Sam Carroll. It proceeded to be one of the best plans ever! Here we are at M.V.R.H.S. as seniors now. The past 4 years went too fast. When we look back at this year, we’ll think of the anxiety up until graduation day. We can’t forget the exams, the awards, and achievements earned by fellow members of our class, our freedom and most important — our decisions. Though we may leave for college, take on jobs or remain here on the Vineyard, one thing is certain: We will remember the time spent at M.V.R.HS and that indi¬ vidual feeling, which make the last 4 years so important to us. “Remember the days of the old schoolyard We used to laugh a lot, oh don’t you Remember the days of the old schoolyard When we had imaginings and we had All kinds of things and we laughed And needed love . . . yes, I do Oh and I remember you. — Cat Stevens — Corinne Dorsey, class historian Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Teachers Association Martha ' s Vineyard Sponsored by Up-Island Auto West Tisbury 45 MOST MUSICAL MR. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE The theme of the American Field Service, “people understanding people,’’ expresses our chapter’s motivation toward world peace through common human understanding. As our membership grew this year, we were able to take on larger projects than had previously been tackled. To fund these projects, AFS sponsored many bake sales, a Valentines’ Carnation Day, and a Flea Market. Through these fund-raising activities, our chapter successfully terminated two short-term, domestic exchange programs with Pelham, NY, and Vergens, VT. Through par¬ ticipating in these programs, our members were able to experience environ¬ ments different from their own, increase their understanding toward differenti¬ ating human conditions, and were also able to become friends with strangers. By becoming friends with strangers, AFS hopes to promote an atmosphere of understanding which would eventually make world peace a possibility. Although we didn’t send a MVRHS student on a foreign exchange, we received two foreign exchange students. Both seniors, Leticia C. Ramerez Her¬ nandez from Mexico, and Izaak Shariv from Israel have become welcome mem¬ bers to the class of ’78. Leticia and Izaak have promoted interest and under¬ standing among their fellow students, enabling friendships to form and grow. As the senior members of the AFS chapter graduate from MVRHS, we hope the junior members will accept and continue to spread the AFS understanding of peace and understanding. White, J. Alley. The Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the National Honor Society has been rejuvenated this year after a period of inactivity. Members of the NHS must show community and school involvement by participating in various pro¬ jects. Our first activity was the initiation of new members. With that in the past, we were able to concentrate on our main goal, which is to offer a scholarship to seniors. Through all of our projects, we hope to increase the importance of academic achievement at MVRHS. Josepha DeSorcy, president Justine Lemenager, vice-president Richard Ulsamer, secretary 75 ROW 1: L. The council itself worked with problems and suggestions brought to it from both students and faculty members. It dealt with problems in scheduling and curriculum and other administrative conflicts. The Council arranged all of the school elections and worked on making the individual classes more productive and efficient. Fund raising activities proved very successful and enabled the Student Council to give two scholarships to graduating seniors. The 1978 Council tried to focus on its main objective: to represent the students and their problems. We hope that future Student Councils will make this their main priority also. Sincerely, Nicholas Lesnikowski, president Scott S. Ewing, vice-president Debbie Grant, secretary Patty Grant, treasurer Mr. John Morrelli, advisor 76 YEARBOOK STAFF ROW 1: Advisor B. The 1978 Vineyarder staff was small, but we’ve produced a yearbook in spite of our many problems. This year ' s staff aimed at producing a yearbook that was not just a carbon copy of past books — we wanted some¬ thing different. Various layout designs and printing techniques have been used to make this book a memorable one which includes all facets of MVRHS.
