1977 VINEYARDER MARTHA’S VINEYARD REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME XVIII Martha’s Vineyard Reg- H.S. LIBRARY Road P o. BOX 1 85 lOOEdgartownRoa . Oak Bluffs, MA 025o ' The class of 1977 is pleased to dedicate this year’s yearbook to Mr. Gerald Ger- olamo and Mr. Leroy Hazelton, the class advisors. They gave their time, patience and understanding even when things looked hopeless. Events that seemed impossible became reality with their encouragement. What you have given to us can never be put into words. So we give this yearbook to you, it’s a phase of our life you were part of. Thank you so much for four wonderful years. You were my wings when I was learning to fly.” D E D I C A T I 0 N 2 j y«44 t uuuu u4 y SENIORS . . are hard workers. . are patriotic. . have class. . . . have class spirit. are organized. 3 ENGLISH MR. Senior Class History Money! If the Class of ’77 is not to be known for anything else, we will always be remembered as the most financially successful class ever to graduate from M.V.R.H.S. As soon as we took our first step into the Regional in the fall of ’73, our advisors, Gerry Gerolamo and Leroy Hazelton, set us straight on what was to be expected of us. We held actual election campaigns for Freshman officers and initiated the concepts of Homeroom Representatives and monthly class meetings. Our President was Mary Oliver; Vice President was Rob Hewett; Treasurer was Ben Hall; and Secretary was Mary Fragosa. James Kelly and Cindy Grant were voted Mr. and Miss Freshman Class. For the first of what was to be a LONG line of unusual money-making schemes, we held a Nickel Day,” during which nickels were strewn over the football field. We also sponsored a shopping trip to Boston for all the students. By our Sophomore year, we were richer than all the other classes and plunged into projects that would unite our whole class. We held a Gum-Ball in Jar” contest, a chain saw raffle, and a dance at the Regional with a live band called Goodnight Louise.” Our President was Mary Fragosa; Vice President was Cindy Grant; Treasurer was Susan Johnson; Secretary was Beth Ryder; and Historian was Liz Burnham. 28 We also sponsored another trip to Boston, a Valentine Dress-up contest, a Lasagna dinner, and a 10-speed bike raffle, not to forget assorted refreshment and bake sales. James Kelly and Cindy Grant were voted Mr. and Miss Sophomore Class. In 1975-76, we were Juniors and could relax with a few thousand in the bank. Our President was Jenifer Crowell; Vice President was Mary Oliver; Treasurer, was Tina Malonson; Secretary was Martha Fisher. Our advisors almost spoiled our unique record of being first class possessing the same advisors for all four years by suggesting that we fly alone. So we organized a Sadie Hawkins Dance, with a live band called Skyland Band,” two record hops, with Bill Rossi of W.R.K.O., and, of course, the Prom. To catch student’s attention, we held an Ugly Face contest, a Hat Day contest, a Junior Class Horse Show, and a St. Patrick’s Day Dress-up. We sponsored yet another trip to Boston, a Lasagna dinner, sold Dairy Queen Discount books, and held a Clean-mile, Car-wash Day.” A lady in Nebraska sent us $250 after reading a follow-up in the Gazette about Clean-a-mile.” Two Junior girls, Jenifer Crowell and Susan Johnson, received summer scholarships to foreign countries. Although Susan did not go because of family circumstances, Jenifer did go to Sweden and had a great summer. Now, in the fall of ’76, we are seniors. Without getting too sentimental, we know we have all traveled a great deal in many ways since that fall of ’73, and we have been reasonably united enough to accomplish a large amount throughout our career” here at Regional. We participated in the development of the Drama department, some of us starring in, and a lot of us actually involved in, all of the plays it produced. We outnumber the underclassmen in sports teams, in Chorus and Band, and in Student Government. If the teachers won’t miss us, certainly everyone else will! Susan E. When people touch my face with love in their eyes, I often wonder if they can touch my heart with the under¬ standing that it takes to realize that I just can’t play a part. I have a need to be true to myself and make my own mistakes; I don’t want to lean too hard on someone else no matter what it takes. I’m not fool enough to ever think that I can be the master of my fate, but it’s up to me to choose my roads in life, although, rocky may be the ones I take. I have a need to be something more than just a reflection of a man. I can’t survive in someone’s shadow, I need my very own little spot to stand because I am what I am and I have the need to be me. That helped us get to where we did. We couldn’t attain this goal without the help of our coach, Mrs. Shemeth. The snow, the rain, the bruises and the pain made our achievement worthwhile in the end. From the thrilling two-point loss to league-leading Harwich to the astounding 104-101 set¬ backs at the hands of Nantucket, it was an exciting winter of basketball. When it is taken into account that the team boasted no returning lettermen from last year’s Cape and Island Championship squad and that it is losing only four seniors through gradua¬ tion, the outlook for the coming years is very bright. Peter DeBettencourt Dale Rogers Co-Captains This has been a great year for our team, taking the League Championship once again with a league r ecord of 13-1, and with an overall record of 15-1. We’ve qualified for tournament at the time of this writing and hope to do well. The Junior Varsity has a rough time in the beginning but ended the season as a very strong team. Sponsored by SAND AND SURF RESTAURANT Vineyard Haven SMITH BODF1SH SWIFT CO., INC. 83 American Field Service American Field Service is a program that uses the enthusiasm and ideals of young individuals to bring a constantly changing world together. This year our A.F.S Club has made a small break-through. Although we did not send a student abroad or host a foreign student, we have publicized A.F.S. through a few activites appealing to the community and the students. During the fall a group from Cape Cod, including a boy from Italy, a girl from Norway, and a summer returnee from Denmark, came to MVRHS. These people, along with two Islanders, Bruce Blair, Returnee from Japan 1975-76, and Jenifer Crowell, Summer-returnee from Sweden, 1976, spoke to the social studies classes about their A.F.S experiences, giving students in our high school greater aware¬ ness of A.F.S. in the school and the world. The annual A.F.S. fleamarket, held in November, was a congenial and profit¬ able day. Many people attended as buyers and sellers of crafts and foods. Children especially enjoyed the puppet show. The club has gained several new underclassmen who have contributed their efforts. Together, we are planning a dance in March so that expenses may be met for our short-term exchange with students from Virginia in May. A.F.S. is now working towards finding an Island family who is willing to have a foreign student live in their home this coming school year. We would also like to see more students interested in participating in an exchange program — sum¬ mer, domestic, or full-year abroad. Through either experience both the individual and MVRHS students would gain knowledge of others by sharing and caring. This is one of the prime goals of the American Field Service. Student Council This year the Student Council held the Southeastern Massachusetts Student Council Convention on the Island. Two hundred student council members and their advisors from the Southeast Region came to the Island for a day-long meeting about the Regional Council. We held workshops; they were run by Island representatives. The convention ran very smoothly, and we were very impressed with the way our council can work together. We have been an active group this year, our main objective being the modification of school rules. We have enjoyed ourselves and have learned much from being members of the Student Council. We hope that the Council will be even more effective in years to come. Cindy Grant, President Cindy Brown, Secretary Music Department The members of this year’s music department showed great ability. Timo¬ thy Barritt and Daniel Siktberg received the honor of being in the South East Music Festival vocally. Rob Hewett received the recognition of playing in the All State Festival and Christopher Allen was accepted to the All Eastern Music Festival. We had a band and chorus exchange with Lebanon, Mew Hampshire; and the Minnesingers went on tour with Madison, Connecticut. It has been a good four years for the seniors, and we hope the coming years will be as good. Maty Oliver President jfr. - jJOfc ,.H SX ' VHf.
