The American Field Service is a program that pro¬ motes brotherhood and mutual understanding of people from all over the world. This year, Bruce Blair was selected to represent the United States in Chicchicbu, Japan. Although adjust¬ ment to a culture so different from our own was difficult at first, he is settled in now — learning and living in the complex Japanese soci¬ ety. Also, this year we are happy to have Darinka Skuber, our A.F.S. student from Yugoslavia. She arrived in August and is staying with the Welch family. Darinka is a welcome addition to our school and the class of 1976. Both the adult and student A.F.S. chapters work hard to raise money to finance various A.F.S. activities and projects. In the past year we have held two flea markets which were quite successful. In these times of great change, it is important to realize the fact that all, in spite of cultural and economic differences, people are people — we all share the same limitations, the same needs and basic feelings. Perhaps the statement “united, we stand; divided, we fall” says it all. Karen Merrill President 26 The year 1976 is special. It is the year of our Nation’s bicentennial, and it is also the year that the staff of the 1976 Vineyarder altered tradition. We feel that the most unique feature in the creation of the 1976 Vineyarder has been the change from the single editor staff used in previous years to a staff led by co-editors, each sharing the manifold responsibilities of making sure that deadlines are met, photo¬ graphs are turned in on time, and lay-outs are completed. We’ve had our share of prob¬ lems, as any staff will, in putting out a year¬ book; but working together we managed to make decisions that we hope will be satisfy¬ ing. We as editors are very grateful to have a staff like ours, all pulling together for a fin¬ ished product. We would like to express our thanks to each and every member. We would also like to thank Miss Barbara Las¬ sen, without her our yearbook could not have been completed. Pamela Dowley, editor; Jeanne Crosby, editor; Miss Barbara Lassen, advisor; Mary Oliver, assistant editor. We want to look back on our yearbook ten years from now and see something that represents the people in our class as individ¬ uals. Despite the difficulties of change we have encountered, we are proud to say that our yearbook fulfills our goal. 1976 Vineyarder Staff YEARBOOK STAFF: STANDING, BACK ROW: W. Van Waldron; L. Sign painters and yearbook editors also remain after school. The student caught flipping peas in the cafeteria stays after school for a different reason. We really didn’t know what to anticipate. Some of us had older brothers and sisters, or friends that were there, and they kindly provided us with the necessary informat ion. Still, those circulating rumors concerning authoritative seniors that kept freshmen in their place had infiltrated the eighth grade, causing a wave of nausea to pass through many stomachs. The first day was not bad at all. There were a lot of people around to discuss that modular system,’’locker combinations and any other problems that arose. Guidance was packed with many freshmen and other students, all wishing to correct errors in their schedules, which were caused by that dumb” computer. The day ended with a feeling of satisfaction, and hopes that we would enjoy the rest of the year as well. As freshmen, our appointed advisors were Mrs. Richard Johnson and Mr. Tyrus Houston, who sat patiently through our class and officer meetings while Chester Cook, Lynda Aiguier, Annette Moreis, Corey Metell, Diane Figueiredo and the class pondered on various money-making schemes, all of which amounted to a short but very successful candy store in the cafeteria, food sales and the selling of stationery. That year’s noted but unsuccessful endeavor was a raffle on a jug of supposed jelly beans. The ace mathematician was to receive ten dollars plus the jug for the closest count. Unfortunately, there was an island-wide shortage of jelly beans that year and Canada Mints seemed to be a reasonable facsimile. The mistake occurred when they were bought by the box instead of the bag, the total cost being seventeen dollars for mints. The raffle ended in bankruptcy, but this proved to be a valuable lesson that would remain with us throughout our years at M.V.R.H.S. A new year and a new election brought with it new officers: Pam Dowley, Regina Trebby, Corey Metell, Chris Flanders, and Diane Figueiredo. Our advisors were Mr. Daniel McCarthy and Mr. Tyrus Houston. A quick turnover sent Mr. Houston’s services to the Student Council and brought Mr. Edmond Coogan to our aid. ROGERS FREIGHT TRUCKING SERVICE, INC. TOWN AND COUNTRY REALTY Sponsored by RITZ CAFE HUGHES HOME BUILDERS, INC. Oak Bluffs Relieved to be be one step from the bottom, and with a little more experience under our belts, we truly deserved the title of sophomore, which in Greek means wise fool.” The year got off to a quick start with a well-organized spaghetti supper, a raffle on a food basket and a bake sale. At this point, financially, the year ended, which brings me to our junior year. Entering this all important year there seemed to be one major concern, the Junior Prom. As we settled into the class meeting, murmurs expressing the independence of ’76 could be heard . . . Hey, let’s not have a prom this year.” Let’s be the first ones to break the tradition.” However, these comments were politely ignored by President Jack McKay, and the meeting progressed. As Patricia Mello was selected as Prom Committee chairperson, a new controversy arose. Formal or informal prom? With inflation upon us and Phase 3 not yet in action, the guys felt their wallets could not bear the rising costs of renting tuxes. This matter was quickly resolved by a vote that was taken, and the majority (being girls) unani¬ mously decided on a formal prom. The evening of May seventeenth arrived. The beautiful mural, drawn and painted by Cheryl King and Alan Davey, set the mood for our selected theme, Imagine.” As the evening progressed, the queen and her court were announced: Cheryl King, Patricia Mello, Christine Flanders, Karen Merrill, Patricia Leighton and Wendy VanW- aldron were chosen as the court, and the reigning queen was a very surprised Pamela Dowley, escorted by Steven Lambros. Our senor year has brought with it the hustle bustle of exams, class pictures, applications, invitations, changes and many decisions about the future. Some of us will pursue college; others will find work, or continue Island life. What¬ ever the decisions, we will always carry with us remembrances of school, be they good or bad. A lot has happened in four years. We have had exciting and victorious athletic seasons; we have developed close friendships; and we have grown considerably. The high school fun” is now over and it is time to change directions and put these past four years to constructive use. The phases we’ve gone through, And conclusions we have come to, Are all in the past now for you. It’s a whole new fresh start, for all of us. May we enjoy even happier lives. For we are strong young adults, With our own separate dreams, And we have much stronger drives.
