In November, we had a horseshow on the softball field; and judges awarded ribbons in each contest. The Junior Class Play, A THURBER CARNIVAL, was a big success. Both girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams were playing in the state tournament. Our president was Gary Pachico; vice president, Gret- chen Schilling; secretary, Jo-Ann Fra- gosa; treasurer, Barbara Handy; and historian, Prudy Peckham. Our advisors were Mr. Weissberg and Mr. Lemen- ager. This year, we are busy applying to colleges, getting jobs, and planning our futures, awaiting June 8, 1975, when we all will hopefully receive our diplo¬ mas. The yearbook staff eagerly has been meeting deadlines to get its publication printed this spring. We have senior privileges this year, the open-ended day open on both ends, a coffee machine, and the music center is our homeroom. Mr. Ross, Mr. Herr, Mr. Nute, and Mr. Donald are our homeroom teachers. Thirty-four seniors attended College Day on October 30, 1 974, at Cape Cod Community College to meet representatives from several col¬ leges. The learning center was moved into its pres¬ ent location, and the guidance department was relocated in the superintendent’s former office. The newly-created drama department offered 9 classes this year, taught by Mr. Duncan Ross. The radio sta¬ tion WVOI broadcasts the Saturday Showdown on Saturday mornings. Music to accompany the acting was provided by Beverly Erickson and Neal Stiller. Duncan Ross directed the show, which played on three suc¬ cessive nights in December. Each performance was well attended by an enthusiastic audience, and our class budget ben¬ efited greatly from the production. More important, however, was the enjoyment and satisfaction which each participant gained from being part of the show. For many students it was their first experience with acting, set design, stage management, or drama in general. And, as any one of those involved will confess, it was a very rewarding expe¬ rience. Cast of “A Thurber Carnival”: Bruce Blair Brenda Costa Pam Dowley Ellen Feil Vincent Ferro Elaine Fortes Jon Fragosa Dana Gaines David Honey Ellen Hughes Meg Renear Linde Tesch r 24 Vineyard Haven Morning Has Broken Our Junior Prom, entitled “Morning Has Broken,” took place on the lovely spring evening of June 1, 1974, at the Harbor- view Hotel. A large, illuminated sunrise mural showered the dance floor with a soft glow as the music began. Before long, it was time to choose the queen and her court. The Junior girls and their escorts were presented by the master of ceremonies, Mr. Roger Lemenager. Then the couples danced to the theme song as the band played. The judges made their decision, and the court was announced: Sally Renear Linde Tesch Kristen Anderson Patricia Corio Paulette Silva Suzanne West Each girl received a rose and took her place behind the throne, awaiting the arrival of the queen. Miss Patricia Correl- lus, escorted by James Rogers, was the queen of the gala. A delicious buffet dinner was waiting in the dining room, and more dancing ended a lovely evening. Our class was the first to participate in this program, and last June six juniors received their diplomas. With few returning letter- men, the Purple and White were a young and inexperienced yet eager squad. The sea¬ son began slowly with few bright spots, but the team gained strength and confidence with each game, and showed a marked improvement after a rearrangement midway through the schedule. This all led to the impressive and well-deserved victory over P- Town in the final game, a satisfying finish to a to ugh season. League play started out with the shocking upset by Chatham. The Vineyarders then took their next three games with ease, but iost a heartbreaker to undefeated Nauset in overtime here on the island. There was still hope for retention of the league title, but the second loss to Nauset made that impossible. There were many highlights to the season, the most memorable being: the thrilling 65-63 win over rival P-town; Ronald Brown scor¬ ing his 1000th career point; and the final league game in which the Vineyarders manhandled Harwich, 103-60. Unfortunatley, this writing was due before tournament play began, but it should be safe to say that the Vineyarders showed their class and gave it their all. A FRIEND ROGER T. And, with the J.V. ' s finishing undefeated as well, it looks as if the winning streak will continue for at least three more years. There were few real contests this year as coach Bob Nute could substitute freely and rely as much upon his second string as he could on his starters. The only really close game was the Nauset encounter where the Vineyarders found themselves behind most of the way, then rallied to pull off an exciting win. With the regular season over, the girls began post-season play. As of this writing they have defeated Bourne for the Cape Cod championship and are on their way to the State Tourney where they will surely do well. Sponsored by ATSCO OIL CO., INC. This year the Vineyarder Staff set out to create a yearbook somewhat different from those of the past. Although we have been hampered by restrictions in size and budget, I feel that we have succeeded in putting out a publication which does not comply with the previously formal yearbook standards. I hope that this trend of innovation and change for the better will continue in the future, and each time will result in a more interesting and artistic “Vineyarder. My special thanks for help above and beyond the call of duty go to Ellen Feil, a great typist and “public relations” person, and to the two fantastic photographers — Naomi Lyons and Bruce Blair — who really made this book a special one. This year, the Student Council has set up better guidelines for closer communication between the administration, school commit¬ tee representatives, and the student body. This has been a year of change within our school system that, in some areas, we have opposed, while in other areas, the change has been long awaited. Thanks to better rapport between the Council and other school functions, along with the help of our advisor, Mr. Tyrus Houston, we feel that as a group, much progress has been made in the expansion of the scope of our student government.
