STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council sold Vineyarder pennants at the football games, this year. The Council has tried to communicate with the student body more. Usually a council deals with the causes in the school and its problems; thus, we have tried to follow the motto, The Student Council — The Council representing the students.” We work for the student body and try to get recognition for them. This is what the stu¬ dents deserve. Thanks go to the members of the Council and to the members of the student body. Timothy Mathiesen Student Council President 18 VINEYARDER STAFF FIRST ROW: E. The November horse show was very successful as was the Junior Class Play in December. It brought our total earnings to over$l,4(X). In the future we plan more money-making activities that involve the class as a whole. We will work together as always. CLASS OF 1976 The class of 1976 started this year with a successful and well-organized spaghetti dinner. We also had a food sale and sold chances on a food basket. We are planning more money-raising activities for Spring, and there’s no doubt that a little more enthusiasm and class unity would be beneficial to the class budget. We are immensely successful, as a school, in all of our athletic endeavors. Being a small school has instilled in our athletes a fierce sense of pride in their teams, and this pride has enabled us to win many things that we were not thought capable of winning. We have also taken on teams from much bigger schools than our own and have always, at least, held our own, and many times, we have come out on the winning end. This is not to say that sports in our school only influence our own teams. The school population sup¬ ports its teams wholeheartedly, and this in turn inspires school spirit. Our teams also have tremendous impact on our communities, and this reflects back on the school in a beneficial way. I am not going to take time in this space to talk about the athletic achievements that our school has made over our four years, but suffice it to say they are numerous and honorable. Therefore, the class of 1974 would like to leave their fervent hope that Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s heritage of sporting excellence will continue for many years, and that they will always receive the support and adu¬ lation of the island population. We came to this high school in 1970, soon finding out the goals expected of us for the coming four years. As it turned out they became difficult ones, at least for our disorganized class. Coming here in our freshman year, we found that our advisors would be Mrs. Costa and Mr. Stewart for our remaining years. We also elected our class officers. Gary Defeo became president and Nancy Thomas became vice presi¬ dent. Heidi Scott and Colleen Kheary were our other officers. That year, we held one food sale that was not very successful. All in all, it was a typical freshman year. Returning the next fall we were now sophomores and had new class offi¬ cers. Nancy Thomas was president and Gary Defeo was vice president. Our other class officers were Vanessa Alleyne, Colleen Kheary and Iris Davis. That year for fund-raising projects, we sold candy and bumper stickers, but this was an unsuccessful venture and we ended up being $2.00 in debt. 46 R I CLASS OF 1974 Third time around we were now juniors and we again had new class officers. Pamela Clark was president with Iris Davis as vice president. Our other officers were Heidi Scott, Vanessa Alleyne and Joanne Dia¬ mond. Realizing that this was to be the year to hold our Junior Prom, we were finally able to raise the money necessary to have it. This was accomplished by the hard work of our president, and a few other stu¬ dents who sold Christmas wreaths, Vineyarder buttons, and chances on guessing the number of dribbles that would be taken in a basketball game. Through our hard work the prom turned out to be a success. Michael Scott was the prom chairman with assistant chairmen being Donna Driscoll and Iris Davis. The theme of our prom was Magic of Spring” with the theme song being Colour My World.” Faith Oliver I was crowned Queen with Larry Look as her escort. Despite all our set¬ backs, that year was our most successful of all. 47 Our senior year arrived at last. This year we again had new class officers. Iris Davis was president with Donna Driscoll as vice president. Our other officers were Elaine Fortes, secre¬ tary; Mary Jo Oliveira, treasurer; and Joanne Diamond, histo¬ rian. This year was our most important as we had to make plans to organize a yearbook, class day, and graduation. We sold bumper stickers in order to raise more money. The year¬ book editor was Michael Scott with assistant editor, Dana Gaines and business manager, Donna Driscoll. The yearbook staff raised money by the usual methods and also held a Super¬ market Spree. This year the seniors were able to obtain the double open-ended day. The main interest of the seniors, though, was to reach graduation day as quickly as possible. As our senior year comes to an end, we can look back at all our years of high school as not those of success but those of achievement, because for a class of complete individuals to have come this far together has been our greatest goal of all. Joanne Diamond Class Historian 48 CLASS OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Mrs. Lena Costa, Advisor; M. Oliveira, Treasurer; E. Fortes, Secretary; D. Driscoll, Vice-President; I. Davis, President; J. Diamond, Historian; Mr. A. Douglas Stewart, Advisor. The class of 1974 is a class of true individuals. We have been through many changes in our four years at high school, and because of this it has been hard to mold into a working unit. Our freshman and sophomore year we ended up in debt, but through the hard work of our Junior Class president, and some dedicated students, we just managed to have a prom. This is our last year; and even though it’s been trying, we’ve made it! Iris Davis President 49 SENIOR MOST ATHLETIC MR. MS.
