DEDICATION Living on the Island has given us a unique view of life that very few other people have had the oppor¬ tunity to experience. We have come to appreciate the inherent sense of togetherness that has laid the foundations for amiable coexistence. From the soli¬ tude of South Beach on a moonlit evening to friendly conversations on the main streets of our towns. With summers that bring the “off islanders and their hec¬ tic lifestyle and winters when the Island is once again our own. We feel that the Island has made us what we are. So, we, the class of 1973, dedicate our yearbook to “island life and the everlasting impres¬ sions that it has made on us. V FACULTY QUPERINTENDENT DR. JONATHAN M. DAUBE PRINCIPAL CHARLES A. In this one year we have scraped together enough money to carry on the tradition of having a prom, which we will theme, “Nights in White Satin.” We made and sold wreaths before Christmas and have had a few food sales to raise money. CLASS OF 1975 The class of 1 975 has been working hard this year to start thinking of the school years to come. We started this year by working in the summer with a coffee shop for the summer session of the High School. Having food sales, selling candy, and holding a raffle are among the other money-raising events that we have held this year. We are hoping to come up with more ideas for helping our class. Our aims as a class are to have a successful prom and graduation. We also want to be trusted by other people and to have the experience of working with people. Mrs. Edith John son and Mr. Tyrus Houston were appointed as our class advisors. We elected Chester Cook as president, Lynda Aiguier, vice-president, Annette Moreis, secretary, Corey Metell, treasurer, and Diane Figueiredo, historian. Our student council members are Christine Flanders, Donald Bagnall, and Debbie White. We have a candy store set up in the cafeteria and in the future we hope to sell stationery as well as have food sales to raise money for our junior prom. We are looking forward to our next three years, which we hope will be successful as well as prosperous. Diane Figueiredo Historian Sponsored by 36 F. E. STUDENT COUNCIL As of this writing, the Student Council has now helped get back the open-ended da for seniors. We have had special meetings in the gym, which have been fairly well attended by any and all interested students. We are right now looking at projects to tackle, which would be beneficial to the whole school. All our regular meetings are open to students and teachers alike. We are being fairly represented at all school committee meetings with two of the five members being student council members. Being a sophomore and president of the Student Council has not been easy on me, but this will definitely be a year that I’ll never forget. My thanks to all the members of the Council who have helped me through; to the students who have talked to me and offered their opinions; to Mr. Pachico, our advisor, and a special thanks to Philip Hale. He has helped many stu¬ dents down the long road to permits and drivers’ licenses. Although it is a trying experi¬ ence for one and all, Mr. Adams always has a smile on his face and one in his heart. We hope he will continue his good work of instruction for our students for a long time to come. Sponsored by OLD COLONY SERVICE CORP. K. T. A- ?,! ■ FL BARDWELL ELECTRONICS Sponsored by VINEYARD HAVEN ATSCO OIL COMPANY HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1973 The year 1970 was the beginning of a new decade, but it was also the begin¬ ning for our class. As we rode up to the high school that day, we suddenly real¬ ized that we were no longer “big shot” e ighth-graders but “dumb little freshmen.” No one knew exactly what we were up against. Only one thing was certain; we were finally in high school. Being in high school, as we found out, means many different things: schedules, classes, new teachers, new classmates, lockers, combi¬ nations, and mostly getting lost; but with the help of our class advisor and fellow classmates, somehow we made it through those crucial weeks. After our big adjust¬ ment, we elected our class officers who were Ann Frieh, secretary; Ken Hyde, treasurer; and Melba Orr, historian, and tried to do the things a class needs to get done. Out advisors, Mrs. Burt and Mr. Custer, helped Orland Donald, our presi¬ dent, and John Schilling, our vice president to get things started. During our first year we actually did quite well. We made money by food sales, mod days, and by selling stationery. When the summer turned to fall, there came the realization that we had made it to our second year of high school. Yes, we were sophomores now, but school was different. Instead of the regular 8 periods-a-day schedule, we were faced with the new rotating schedule, which was not only new to the students, but to the teachers as well. There was no change in class officers this year, but we did get new advi¬ sors — Mrs. Anthony and Mr. Mayhew. We had the usual food sales and raffles, but we wanted to think of something new and original that would work. Well, it was decided that we would take one of the closets in the hall and turn it into a store that would sell school supplies. We had a lot of cooperation from our class — but the store only lasted 2 months, if that; but we didn’t give up. Somehow with the good oP reliable food sales we increased our treasury enough so that now “our prom” seemed possible. With a few miracles, we made it through the new schedule system, our store (failure), and our year as sophomores. 56 Well, that fall we returned, only this time as juniors. We were again faced with another new schedule system: the variable modular system which allowed more “free-time” for the student. We elected the class officers for the ensuing year. They were: Orland Donald, president; Linda Gaines, vice-president; Ann Frieh, sec¬ retary; Kathy Santos, treasurer; and Melba Orr, Historian. With the prom just around the corner, we needed money and fast. We decided to work on something really big, so our class tackled the play, “You Can’t Take it With You.” Under the direction of Steven Cronig and Mr. Daria, we successfully performed our play in the spring. This added income made our play seem like a reality instead of a dream. Another money-raising event of the year was a mother-daughter father-son basketball game. In November our class decided to get moving on the prom. Robin Cullen was chosen as chairman and Ann Frieh as assistant-chairman. We found that putting on a prom was easier said than done. It was decided to have our prom at the Harborview Hotel, and for the theme we chose “Here Comes the Sun” from the Beatles’ album. Abbey Road. As many classes have found, the hardest and most important part of a prom is the decorations. Ours were all cen¬ tered around an imitation garden and a beautiful sunrise mural. The evening of May 1 3 suddenly came upon us. Yes, our prom was finally here. As always, the junior girls were especially nervous that night. Each hoping and wishing that they would become queen. For seven lucky girls, a wish of all time came true. The court was slowly picked out of a long line of girls: Linda Gaines, Julie Norton, Carmen Tankard, Cheryl Alwardt, Janet Cottle, and Joan Johnson. Then the awaited moment came. As the band played our theme song, Lynn Hodges was crowned queen. To see us through our final year, we once again elected Orland Donald a s our president; Linda Gaines, vice-president; Ann Frieh, secretary; Kathy Santos, trea¬ surer; and Melba Orr, historian. Even though it was our last year, we still had a lot of work to do preparing for graduation. 57 Our big projects for our senior year included a senior semi-formal entitled “An Old Fashioned Christmas” with Carolyn McIntosh as chair¬ man. On that night, Ann Frieh was selected as queen with Linda Gaines and Betsy Feil as her court. Other projects were the senior class play. “They Gave Him a Co-ed” directed by Mr. Daria, and the publication of the 1973 Vineyarder with Harvey Garneau as editor and Barbara Morgan as Business manager. How can it be that four years of our lives have passed us already? Well, we might as well face up to it, they have. Now we have got to look ahead and think about our futures. Everyone is busy making deci¬ sions about whether college is for them or if they should take a year off or just work. Whatever the future holds for the class of 1973, every one of us will save these special memories from the past four years that we have spent together. At the end of this year we will be going our separate ways. It won’t be the end of our class, though, for out of the class of 1973 there came beautiful friendships that will last forever. Melba Orr Historian Phew, the masterpiece is finished at last. HELPING THE GUN RI6E!!
