We have suc¬ cessfully held our Junior Prom, which was our main goal. Some money¬ raising events we held this year to support our prom included a Mother- Daughter-Father-Son basketball game and a performance of the play “You Can’t Take it with You,” under the direction of Steven Cronig. But ... I don’t think that this is all our class is. We have come to know and understand each other and learned how to work together . For this reason, it will be hard for us to go our separate ways at the end of next year. It seems like yesterday when we were just freshmen. Sponsored by EDWIN K. We were Freshmen with that indescribable feeling of being “just that. There was the feeling that ever since there have been yearbooks, class his¬ torians have tried to convey that indescribable feeling, even though it’s something you can’t virtually put your finger on. Maybe it’s one of those phenomena, sensationally unexplainable, but it happens in those first, few, awful months of adjustment. Like turning into what you hoped would be an English class and instead finding the janitor’s closet and a very surprised janitor, or even just as you were beginning to get the hang of things, finding yourself in the Boiler Room instead of the lunchroom. But it’s not only the embarrassment of getting yourself hopelessly lost, it’s the new friends, faces, classes, teacher, lockers, locker combinations, books, busses, bell, . . . you name it, we had to adjust to it. If order breeds habit, and chaos breeds life, we must have been gang busters. But out of that confusion, after the smoke had cleared a little, we found our first solid organization as a class in the election of our first slate of officers: President, Steven Hoxsie; Vice-President, Paula Strople; Secretary, Alicia Lesni- kowska; Treasurer, Carl Thomas; and Historian, Patricia Figueiredo. With our advisors. Miss Higgins and Mr. Chamberlain, we set about earning money to support our later projects con¬ nected with the Prom. Then “IT” happened, “you’re Joking!” “Uh oh, you’re not . . .,” “Aw c’mon!!!” “Why do we have to be the ones?” “It’s not fair!!! ( . . . sigh . . .). Apparently the Seniors in a sud¬ den strike of ingenious humor had devised a competition between the Freshman homerooms to collect wood for a bonfire to be burned at their up-coming basketball rally. The homeroom to collect the most wood or having the highest pile at the end of the allotted time, won the tro¬ phy made especially for that purpose by Mr. Chamberlain. No one warmed quickly to the idea of lugging logs and boards; but, then again, who likes to be last? So pretty soon the con¬ versation turned to “Do you suppose we could borrow your Dad’s truck?” “Yeah, and how about your Dad?” “What are you doing after school?” ”... BUGS!!! . . .,” “On your foot!” In the wash, homeroom one got the trophy with homeroom two and three respectively following. And so our first year passed, food sales. Mod days, logs and all. 52 1970 arrived and with it a new tribe of Sophomores. A bit experienced and defi¬ nitely more sophisticated than “those Freshmen,” we elected our officers for that ensuing year: President, Carl Thomas; Vice-President, Mary Jane Nevin; Secretary, Alicia Lesnikowska; Treasurer, Jane Renear; and Historian, Patricia Figueiredo, with our advisors Miss Higgins and Mr. Zoll. With the Prom just a fast year away, we began to earn towards that goal. We needed money and we didn’t have it. How sim¬ ple could a headache be? Out of the many schemes we discussed we found our¬ selves taking orders for class jewelry, collecting everyone’s cellar and attic relics for a rummage sale and filling our treasury with the results of many food sales. Well, we made it. Two out of two years, not bad. We must be learning something. So here we are again, only Juniors this time. We ' re also beginning to think a bit more. A lot of things are not so far away as they were. Time is not so lenient as one would think, nor as generous with its pace. There are things to be done we didn’t have to worry about before: The Junior Prom to be taken care of, S.A.T.’s, even a moment or two of thought towards graduation, to mention only a few. First of all, however, we needed organization, that comes by electing officers to keep the class running. The 1971 officers were: President, Joanne Leighton; Vice-President, Mary Jane Nevin; Treasurer, Karen Hunt; Secretary, Alicia Lesnikowska; and Historian, Pa¬ tricia Figueiredo. Our advisors were Mr. Herr and Mrs. Fischer. We gained our finan¬ cial support through a food basket, a car wash, and common but invaluable little ani¬ mal, the food sale. And now, what everyone had been waiting for, the Prom. Named after Lewis Carrol’s imaginative and lively story, “THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, a Prom Committee was quickly gathered to crystalize the fairy tale into the reality of May, 1971, at the Harborview Hotel. 53 The committee under Patricia Figueiredo, Chairman, and Jane Carroll, Co-Chairman, worked the good part of the year towards that one important night. And so amid the card- men, the Chesire Cat and the Mad Hatter and of course Alice Betsy Brooker was chosen Queen. Her Court Princesses were Jane Renear, Joanne Leighton, Paula Strople, Karen Maciel, Karen Hunt, and Mary Jane Nevin. To navigate us through our last year we elected Stephen Silvia as our class President with Linda Correira as Vice-President, Flora Allen as Sec¬ retary, Karen Hunt as Treasurer, and Patricia Figueiredo as Historian. Our advisors were Miss Higgins and Mr. Herr. Our big projects were the Senior Fashion Show held November 21st with women’s, children’s and men ' s fashions, and the Senior Ball which was titled “WINTER FROST.” When you come down to it, it’s hard to find something to say. Our last year. There was a time when that was far away, beyond our imagination to know what we would like to be our expectations. Now everything “is.” Everyone of us has found something different in the four years we spent together, and we’ll always be carrying a bit of “those” people and that “time” with us. The only thing we can be now is the best of what we are. You can never fail doing that. As Mary Queen of Scots once said, “In my end is my beginning . . ..” So it is with us, an end of what we were and a beginning of what we will be. Patricia Figueiredo Historian CLASS OFFICERS AND ADVISORS LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. William Herr, class advisor; Stephen Silvia, President; Linda Correira, Vice-President; Patricia Figueiredo, Historian; Karen Hunt, Treasurer; Miss Marion Higgins, class advisor; absent Flora Allen, Secretary Our Senior year has at last arrived, and we are forced to look ahead and think about our futures. The class has decided once again to have graduation at the taberna¬ cle in Oak Bluffs. Our theme is “Three Essentials of Life: Something to Do, Something to Love, and Something to Hope For.” Even though the Prom is not on our minds in our Senior year. Gradua¬ tion is. Our first money-raising project for graduation was a Winter Style Show, followed by food sales and a Senior Ball. These things would not have been possible without the strong support of my fellow class officers and advisors. Stephen Silvia President Sponsored by THE SEA CHEST VINEYARD DRY GOODS, CO.
