Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1970 volume:

i r 1 r i WM v J FOREWORD This yearbook represents many things. For me and for a lot of other people it is the epitome of work and work and work. But it is also the one vehicle that can always carry us back to these days at the Regional when things were fantastically wonderful and miserable and happy and not so happy. When we all worked like crazy but had the best times of our lives. It brings our old friends home again and reminds us that life is a blast. More than any of these, though, the yearbook brings us something unique. And that is; THE SPIRIT OF STUDENTS—that life and that joy that is in us through all the educational mountains and valleys that we drag or run through, and that we never forget. Nothing is all roses yellow, red, or even white—especially school. But ours can sure like it. t .. m ;V-- TABLE OF CONTENTS A dministration U nderclassmen A ctivities E S ssay eniors . 5 .15 .25 .37 .45 .51 ■ ' i- DEDICATION On every yearbook dedication page the eternal and perhaps even infernal question arises, How do you memorialize the first 18 years of your life? And we, the Class of 1970, feel that there is no one thing that ade¬ quately sums up our years at the Martha ' s Vineyard Regional High School. So we dedicate this year¬ book to those multiple images that filled our lives for 18 years: to Gay Head sunsets; to Chappy to beautifully warm, gray i cloudy, windy days; to fast cars; to Norsemen ' s Tomb; to pump- kins at midnight; to skipping class to go to Shop; to everything in the summer; to football games; to Uncle Al; to the Youth Center; to hiding in the Music Center; to Worm and the West Tisbury gang; to victorious bas¬ ketball games; to hayloft parties; to retreats; to lasagna; to ducks on Edgartown Road; to bore¬ dom; to rainy Mondays and thank God it ' s Friday; to the latest news; to no news; to nec¬ tarines; to pickerel at Scrubby Neck; to being miserable; to Zack ' s Cliffs, of course; to cer¬ tain supervision; to him and her; to rainbows; and to life and the world because they ' re both so much fun. Being sophomores is a bit easier han being freshmen, but weVe had to work pretty hard this year to get money for our Junior Prom, next year. We have had food sales, rummage sales, and sold class jewelry, and, all in all, have done fairly well towards increasing our treasury. Ifs strange and a bit sad watching all of the seniors leave this year, knowing in two years it will be us. Patricia Figueiredo Class Historian FIRST: L Correira, P. Landers, J. Fisher, V. But it ' s been kind of fun, too, getting to know all of the other kids in the school. It seems like it will take so long before we are seniors. Our class is busy raising money for our treasury. Already we ' ve had a food sale, sold stationery, and held one Mod Day. So the future looks bright for us. We can ' t wait for next year. Melba Orr Class Historian Sponsored by HERBERT D. The editor gives the orders, complains, worries, tolerates, plans, and in the end gets all the glory. But in between there is a bunch of kids that really make the yearbook: original layout designers, expert typists (of course), managers, ad sellers, people who came just to help at anything, all of them that came when they were called, and made this yearbook as much as I ever did. A motley crew? Perhaps. But Til take them over anyone else. Give them Five Gold Stars, the Award for Meritorious Service, sometimes under tire, and a great big THANK YOU—because they deserve it. This year the Minnesingers, mature in wisdom, talent, and spirit, have continued the tradition of superlative vocal music in the high school. Under the able direction of Mr, Robert Nute, the Minne¬ singers have worked for their annual spring tour, which included Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire. They also presented concerts at the island elementary schools. Their training has ranged from 15th and 16th century madrigals and motets to contemporary arrangements, pop music, and electronic vocal music. It has been a rewarding year for both Mr. Nute and the group, and with a lot of work (and fun) behind them, they ' ve set a standard that will be hard to match. Spring is a beautiful time of the year; it is known as the new birth, the beginning. Last year, the fall saw a birth of a kind. The birth of a stu¬ dent voice. The Student still is in its youthful spring sea¬ son; all of the blossoms have not yet fully bloomed. But before the 1970 ' s are over, we hope to see the Student as a major sounding board for ideas of change or revi¬ sion, a place of entertain¬ ment, an informative weekly, and a focal point for newly found school spirit. All of this can be achieved through underclass cooperation and the knowledgeable guidance of Mr. Robert Hyde, our fac¬ ulty advisor. I would like to personally ‘ thank Mr. Hyde for his tremendous support and inexhaustable wit, with¬ out which none of this could possibly have come about. My very sincere thanks and best wishes for the coming years. And to the Student, farewell to deadlines, and copy, and last-minute issues. The Student now wishes the Seniors of 1970 tremendous happiness in life ahead, to a fantastic group that has a lot of class. Tom Andrews Editor-in-Chief 42 43 SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. E. C. THE HISTORY The Class of 1970 began four long years ago ... or maybe it wasn ' t so long ago Can your mother ' s car fit just one more? when the little freshmen from the whole island timidly climbed onto what seemed to be HUGE busses that day in September ' 66. We, the big shots to the eighth graders and dumb freshmen to the upperclass¬ men, walked those l-o-n-g halls so confused and too scared to ask anyone where to go (for shame! me live up to that horrible idea of being dumb?) Before we had even learned our locker combinations (was it 32-28-4 or 28-4-32?), we elected our class officers and tried to do the things a class has to get done. With the help of our advisors, Mr. Thomas and Miss King, and Jimmy Rogers as our president, we tried to get some work started. Slowly but surely, we got accustomed to the problems and glories (?) of being in high school. Then, sooner than we expected, we were introduced to those horrid things called mid-year exams. Before we could think about getting spring fever, it seemed that summer was here. In three short months we were back. This time though, we were quite arrogant and even a little snobbish to the new crop of freshmen that came in. It actually seemed as though we knew what we were doing! Amazing! With Jeff Kelley as the new president, we continued the job of money-earning started last year. All right kids, you know how fast last year went and this year ' ll go by faster . . . so work!! And work we did. The highlight of the year was a play in the spring, The Island Homecoming. It was our first really big shew, and came off too good to be true. For the first time, we saw how well our 52 class could work together. That spring, for a second time, we saw a group with their caps and gowns march down to receive their diplomas. Wait! Are we half way there? No, not us . . . When we returned that fall, we could proudly state that we were now upperclass¬ men. But with the sunshine there also comes the rain. We had to get started on the prom . . . OUR prom. No time could be too soon. Danny Issokson was voted chairman with Betsy Honey as the assistant chairman. To have the kind of prom we wanted was going to take money, so we decided to put on another play. ' Arsenic and Old Lace, di¬ rected by our own Michael Anthony, was cast, and in March it was performed. It turned out quite a success with everyone enjoying it, especially the cast. The added income made our prom plans seem a little more realistic. The first thing was to decide on a theme . . . one like no other class had used. Springtime, Flowers, Fountains and Other Things were chosen. Then the search for a place for our prom faced us. Country Club? No. School? NO!! Harborside? No. Harbor View? Yes! So, there it was ... at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. And what a night. All the junior girls were especially careful while eating dinner, so they wouldn ' t get this or that on their gowns. Then the time came . . . All junior girls and their escorts please circle the dance floor. Everyone started to move, whisper¬ ing . . .who? her? Maybe! Will all others but Audrey Tilton Wendy White Marcia Rogers Elizabeth Honey Pamela Stiller 53 Wendy lacono Sue Carroll please step aside! From these princesses the queen was selected. It was . . . Marcia Rogers Then came graduation again. This was the last class before us (gulp!). Michael Mc¬ Carthy was chosen Marshal for the Class of 1969. Here we said good-bye to friends that had come to mean so much to us. We were now the elders of the school. When we arrived back that September, just three short years since those nervous freshmen days, we realized that now we had to start thinking about the future. Where to go, what to do, and how it should be done, were just a few questions we asked ourselves. We all have found that those four years were the only ones in which we were one . . . Now we must go our separate ways, without having the ' security ' of being told what to do; we have to think and act like the adults we are supposed to be. Remember all the things a senior goes through? Getting measured for caps and gowns, and just as nervous as when we were measured for class rings as sopho¬ mores . . . Smile, and turn your head a little to the right. Okay. Oh, you ' ll be so lovely. . . . What do you want to be when you grow up? And then prom nights and senior beach parties and fun weekends and the senior variety show and more parties and there was no end . . . Remember it all? df course you do. Be¬ cause we were one—The Class of 1970. These pages show just what it was like: the rehearsals and construction and make-up and more rehearsals and sick stomachs and flasks backstage and missed cues and laughs and opening nights and closing nights and cast parties and everything in between; curtain calls and dirty tablecloths and the back of the set and a million and one things that make a play. There were tears, too, but more than that, there was the fun of it all, and the glow that you felt when you finally realized, after all that work, that the audience loved you. OFFICERS AND ADVISORS THE WOMEN; Noreen Mavro, Historian; Faye Baird, Secretary; Karen Scott, Vice-President; THE MEN: Mr. Edward Thomas, Advisor; Gregory Orcutt, President; Mr. Leroy Hazelton, Advisor; Kenneth Ivory, Treasurer. Here they are, those standards of righteousness, those pillars of guidance, leadership, and babysitting. They are the senior class officers and advisors, and they are the great¬ est. They stand for all the wonderful factors that make our class what it is. And you know what that is . . . But to be serious. They do represent a leadership that has brought the Class of 1970 a level of maturity we thought was unattainable. They have not done it all, for they represent all of the officers and advisors that have gone before them. But they are the symbols of our success. To Mr. Thomas and Mr. Hazelton, and to Miss King before, we owe a lion ' s share of appreciation and thanks. They came and supervised when we needed them, told us to shut up when we should have shut up, worried for us when we should have worried, and guided us through the pitfalls and pleasures of high school. So this page is for them, and for their unfailing wisdom that we needed so badly, and that they were so willing to give. 62 Sponsored by MARTHA ' S VINEYARD NATIONAL BANK Vineyard Haven My halo slipped.
