DEINC.-ITED TO THE 1lIIfllfORV OF .llolhum lLiinun1aun1e tlhr. john l.innane jr.. only child of Mr. and Mrs. john Linnane of Bevington, was born November 23, 1919. junior. as he was affectionately called by his many friends, re- ceived his early education at Churchville and the St. Ambrose Grade School in Des Moines. ln September, 1931, he enrolled in the sixth grade in the Martensdale schools. 1-le graduated from the local eighth grade on May 18, 1933. Lfpon entering high school he be- came interested in the various sports and earned letters in kittenball and basketball. lle graduated on May 20, 1937. For several years following his graduation he engaged in farm- ing with his parents. lle answered the call of his country on january 24, 1942. and was stationed at lndiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. when he was sent overseas September 1, 1943. junior belonged to the 83rd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion of the now famous Spearhead Division of the lst Army. llis division according to official army information was the first to cross the German border east of Enpen. llis battalion was the first to take a German town in this war. junior received the Purple lleart for wounds sustained in battle September, 1944. On january 11, 19-15, his parents received word that he was missing in action and on january 31 he was reported as killed in action in Belgium on December 23, 1944. Memorial services were held at the Church of the Assumption at Churchville on Saturday, February 3, 1945. The entire community wishes to express its sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Linnane in their recent bereavement. 5
