Mrs. Brown was our class sponsor and janette Martens was our class president and she also represented the class as candidate for Homecoming queen. Helen Carley, Phyllis Hill, Eugene Cameron, and james Bussanmas left us before the year was over and Laura Beals and Rena Faro joined us. We started our second year with nineteen students from our liresh- man year left. Mrs. Brown was again our class sponsor, we had two class parties under her supervision. Rachel Martens was our class president and Betty Eagen represented our class as queen candidate. Beverly Brown, joan Bussanmas, Rena Farr, and Thomas johnson left us during the year and Veda Deaton and jack McCauley joined us. ln l943 we started our junior year with l6 energetic students. Mrs. Cramer was our class sponsor, janette Martens our class president and also queen candidate. We lost Veda Deaton, Laura Beals, and Donald Weaver and gained Luella jarman and james Dooley. On October I9, our class presented our class play TEA TOPER 'l'AVERN, to a large audience. The proceeds were used to entertain the Seniors at their annual junior and Senior Banquet in Des Moines. Thirteen ambitious Seniors embarked on the last lap of their high school career. Marjorie Crawford and Kenneth Crow left us soon after school started. Mr. Cramer was our class sponsor and Donald Deileck class president: Lyle Sears, vice-president: and james Dooley, secretary and treasurer. Betty Eagen was our candidate for queen. We had our class pictures taken january l7th at Launspach's. We also had a farewell party for Francis Hendrickson on january l7th, who was called into the service on February IZ. Rachel Martens, Donald DeHeck, Gerald Millican, and janette Martens are the only ones in the class who have had all their schooling at Martensdale. Our class play, WHERE'S GRANDMAPH, was given on April 25. Sneak day was May 2. Class day was May 4. Baccalaureate was May 6. Graduation was on May 9. .18 s:o1nx1eri4x1:n1o1o1o:a oi CLASS PROPI-IECY One afternoon as I returned home from work, I found a telegram on the doorstep. Opening it I read the following: MEET ME AT THE STA- TION AT 5:00 OCLOCK: DONALD DEI-IECK. I knew that Don was in the Navy so I decided that he was home on furlough or had received a Dishonorable discharge. Anyway I met him and took him up to that popu- lar apartment on Pleasant Street. As we expected we found Audrey and Iona busy writing letters. However, they put them aside and went down- town with us. Don and I started talking about old times and we began wondering where our old classmates were. We decided to take time off the next day and find as many of them as possible. We found Gerald Millican sooner than we expected as he was in the news reel of the World-Series playing second base for the Yankees. Gerald owned a large ranch which he op- erates while not playing ball. We learned that Lyle was his foreman, so we decided to visit Gerald at his ranch. When we arrived, we found not only Gerald but also Lyle and his wife, whomxwe know better as Miss Janette Martens. lncidentally, Audrey accompanied us as the official Mrs. Delleck. janette and Lyle had just received a telegram from Francis Hend- rickson who is now a sergeant in the army. His wife and children live in New York. After we had eaten our supper, Betty Eagan phoned Gerald from llollywood where she is a popular movie star. Gerald told us that Rachel was playing basketball for the A. l. B. of Des Moines. We phoned Rachel and she invited us to the game that night. They were playing the Pepsi-Cola Girls. To our amazement, we found Mary Ellen Lee in the Pepsi-Cola Line-up. She had a good job with the Bell Telephone Company. Rachel told us that Delores Berry was also at- tending the A. I. B. where she had set several speed records in typing. Delores said that Luella, now Mrs. Strable, lived on a farm near St. Charles. The Strables were raising purebred jersey cows, not to mention five children. We learned from Luella that Cramer was still roaming the country looking fort his lost property, namely a duck. She said he wouldn't roam far though, because he had been cut down to an A card since he quit teaching at M. H. S. -----11c1f'-1'-1f-A--- 9 CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of '45, being of sound mind, make, declare, and publish this to be our last will and testament. The Seniors will their Physics class to William Reinholdt who makes a special effort to attend. The Seniors leave their love and ability to get along with the teachers to the 8th Graders who seem to have some trouble. The Seniors also leave their ability to use paddles to Mr. Cramer who evidently doesn't know how to use them. Delores Berry wills her good deportment grades to the 8th grade who need them very badly. Mary Ellen Lee leaves her love for typing to Richard llusted whose fingers generally are all thumbs. Gerald Millican leaves his ability to tease and pester the girls to Robert Newell. jimmy Dooley leaves his love for a certain Freshman girl to whom- ever it may concern. Francis llendrickson leaves his love for water during Mrs. Opperman's Typing class to whoever is thirsty. Well ? ? ? ? ? ? janette Martens leaves her love for the tall dark and handsome to Kathleen Cassidy who's been paying too much attention to red heads. Betty Eagan leaves her love for sailors to a certain Freshman girl. We wonder who ? F P ? F ? Lyle Sears wills ability to get through the mud roads to Clarence Campbell whose girl is lucky enough to live on good roads. Luella jarman leaves her love for sparkly jewelry to Edith Fulkerson, who seems to think they are pretty nice. Donald Delleck leaves his A sticker to anybody who uses them to go to Des Moines as much as he does. What's so interesting in there, Don? lle says it's because he's hungry, but we don't believe him. Rachel Martens leaves her love for those Sophomore boys, who just pester the life out of her, to any Senior girl who will have to put up with it next year or are those boys going to start the year out better next year? 10 -y-i-Q - - - -a-c- 1 -fini 1 I SEN ORS Class Ailollu: 'lihe greater the trial. the more glorious the triumph Class I-'lim-er: Sweet Pea Cl.'1s.sCnlnr: Wine and Gold Dllmkiis BERRY Barry Well, I don't care, you just better stop it. The Martensdale boys, lacking in height, made up for that shortcoming with plenty of pep and team work. Only two reserve letter winners, Milliran, a senior, and Wiedmann, a junior, remained from last year's squad. The playing experience of the halanre of the squad was very limited. The squad of fourteen included three seniors, one junior, five sophomores, and five freshmen. Considering their inexperienee and lark of size the team made a creditable showing ending with a record of Owins and 12losses. The lineup most of the season found Millican and Dooley at forward, Kleymann or Sinn at center, Wiedmann and Del-leek at guards. Highlight of the season was one game with Norwalk at Indianola, Norwalk defeated the boys 20 to 15 and went on to win the County Championship. BOYS' BASKETBALL RECORD M.H.S. 2l Milo 38 M. Ten High School girls answered the first call for basketball. This group included two letter winners, Luella Jarman and Rachel Martens. Five girls, Betty Eagan, Mary Annett, Phyllis Berry, Faune Maxwell, and Jean Brownlie were on the squad last year and three freshmen, Ruth Hewitt, Anna Miller, and Dorothy Wiedmann, were out for the first time. Edith Fulkerson who transferred from Cincinnati also was on the squad. Thirteen Junior High School girls were invited to try out for the team. The rules of the Iowa High School Athletic Union state that girls below fifteen years of age may play in High School games, receive a letter, and still be allowed to play four years in High School. The girls showed a lot of improvement before the season was over. However a lack of experience and a series of illnesses handicappd the team in a number of games with the record for the year showing 4 wins and 15 losses. Luella Jarman was the leading scorer with 240 points altho she did not play in three games. Ruth Hewitt, a freshman, made 73 points altho she did not play in three games, either. Seniors on the squad are Betty Eagan, Rachel Martens, and Luella Jarman. GIRLS' BASKETBALL RECORD M. H. S. 11 Milo 49 M. H. S. 32 Milo 39 M. H. S. 18 Spring Hill 42 M. H. S. 31 Patterson 24 M. H. For the first time since the fall of 1941, the boys' baseball team did not win the sectional baseball tournament. They did however get to the finals and lost by a score of 3 to 2. Practically an entire new team was in the field. The majority of the players were freshmen and sophomores and a record of 7 wins and 3 losses was made. Gerald Stewart who pitched most of the games during the fall season left for the service in the middle of October and another pitcher or two will have to be developed to take turns with Jimmy Dooley on the mound. Various projects have been undertaken Within the last year and tl1e entire eoinmunity is to be congratulated for its approval and support of tl1e projects. .fzf af sz: -zu' HEALTH CLINIC Last spring, practically every high school student received parental approval and was taken to lndianola where a clinic, sponsored by the Iowa State Department of Health, was held at the lndianola High School Building. In addition to the high school students, all the teachers and the school bus drivers also were included and were to have X-rays taken of their lungs. The results of this X-ray were very satisfactory. lt is hoped that another clinic can be held in the near future and that all the school children can be examined next time. 0 0 31 CLEAN TOWEL SYSTEM 'l'he Letter Club started a noteworthy project this year when they decided in favor of a towel system. lt is hoped that this will be permanent. ln starting the project four dozen towels were purchased. Every person going out for a sport was to donate one towel. Thus there are approximately seven dozen towels in the supply. Practically every student in lligh School and junior lligh also gave twenty-five cents to help cover the expense of 3545 which included the cost of towels, buying a washing-machine, tub, wringer, and clothes racks. The manual training boys take turns doing the washing in the annex room off the shop. liot and cold water have been piped into the room and the outlet drain which was already there, is used conveniently. With this arrangement a towel is used but once and every boy or girl has a clean towel every day. Athletic equipment can also be washed and kept in good condition. -rr ff 1: is WATER APPROVAL Difficulties with the water system that had been of an extended nature caused the board to make some repairs on the pipes and pump. Samples of water were sent to the State Department of Health both before and after finishing the work and a satisfactory test and official approval resulted. aff fi -xr fr DENTAL CLINIC Mr. Hoffman, from the State Health Department in Des Moines, came on November ZZ to examine the students' teeth and advised them what to do if dental work was needed. This was part of a state wide project and was done free of charge. The reason for this was that many of the men going to the Armed Services were found to have defective teeth. They hoped by this project to discover the decayed teeth and correct them now before they had a chance to get worse. 00 4 32 'violet.-ioici:ici:i5icis1ci:is1ci:i:i:ici:i:iio2:i1 THE HOT LUNCH The Hot Lunch Program sponsored by the Martensdale School with government aid was started on Monday, November I3, and terminated April l. The Hot Lunch Program was instituted by the government in an effort to build up the health of its citizens. The program is not to be run on a profit basis and surplus money that accumulates must be used to buy more food or pay for equipment that is used in the program. The local school contracted with the government to use Type A lunch which included the following for each pupil: l. One-half pint of milk. 2. Two ounces of meat. fish. cheese or egg or four tablespoons of peanut butter or one-half cup of dry peas or beans. 3. Three-fourths cup of vegetables or fruit. 4. One or more slices of bread. 5. Two teaspoons of butter or fortified margarine. The cost of each meal was 9 cents for each pupil. The government reimbursed the local school allowing 9 cents for each pupil served. Thus the school received I8 cents for each meal although the pupil paid but 9 cents. This program requires systematic planning of menus, quantity buying and cooking, and cooperation of everyone concerned if the program is to be a success. Mrs. Oliver Frazier, Mrs. George Kelly, Mrs. Don Nicholls, and Mrs. john Kleymann have been in charge of the program after it was started and have the responsibility of planning, buying, cooking and serving for approximately 150 students. Students who have assisted are Delores Berry, janette Martens, Dorothy Wilson. Jeannine Sarchett, Francis Hendrickson, Lyle Sears, and Gerald Iverson. Fay McConnell also has done his part in helping this project by bringing pasteurized milk from the Northland Dairy in Des Moines. if sf: if 'ir VACCINATION The Farm Bureau sponsored a vaccination and immunization project in Warren County this year. Mrs. Alfred Kelly was chairman in jefferson Township. On january 5th Dr. G. A. Jardine of New Virginia and Mrs. Mabel Stotts of St. Marys came to the local school and administered shots for diphtheria and small pox to all those in the community who desired the treatment. The cost of each treatment was fifty cents. i:iJ1oli:::iei:i:1oicio1cii-:: 33 o'o u 01 ui 01411411 01 ui ui trivia: ui ui oi 1010101 i pci- 3-- Y--- - .-.. .:.::::::.:.:.:.:.:::.:.:...
