99999 99 999 99 99999999999999999999 99 999 99 9 99 999 99999 99999999999999999999999999999 9999 ALUMNI Distinctive honors conferred upon two Martensdale High School graduates came to Fern Martens, Class of '29, and Gilbert Maynard, Class of '33, at the end of the 1934 school year. Fern was chosen one of the four campus beauties of Iowa State College. She has recently been elected Smith-Hughes domestic science teacher at Corning, Iowa. Gilbert tied for first honors in scholarship at Simpson College. He is now a sophomore in the commercial department. Lorraine Lickteig, Class of '29, had the pleasure of coaching a girls' team to defeat her Alma Mater. .Dutch's sextet turned the trick 24 to 18 and went on to a successful season, being county finalists. She is coach and mathematics teacher at Maxwell. Superintendent Lyman Gates, Class of '23, has apparently done a fine job at Rutland. Iowa. He found a small frame school building with but two years of high school. During his stay there a fine brick structure has been erected and a complete four year high school inaugurated. Of the Class of '34 several have attended college this year. Thev are: Simpson College, Wilma Crow, Mary Jane Monroe and Lenore Howell: Drake University. 5.oishLee: Iowa State College, ,Arlie Tillotson: American Institute of Business, Mary mit . Others in college this year are: Simpson College, George Beam, Elsie Walker and Merwin Strahan: Drake University, Ruth and John Roberts: Iowa State College, Paul Martens. Dan Clarke, Class of '31, was the victim of a very sad auto accident on April 22. Dan was struck by a truck driven by Roy Anderson, Class of '28, and killed instantly. The entire community mourned the death. of the young man. No blame was placed on Roy. The accident was unavoidable. Winifred Brownlie, Class of '29, has been teaching a country school near Milo for the past two years. Earl McGuire, Class of '3l. was recently married to Evelynn Biggs. Earl and his bride are living in Moline, Ill. Wallace Brownlie, Class of '30, is an enlisted seaman on the U. S. S. Penascola now in Pacific Ocean waters. Dorothy Kellar and Dortha Hickman. both of the Class of '3l. were married respectively to Slats Hibbs and Robert Johns. Both are living in Des Moines. Mary Forbes, Class of '28, was married to Allen Hutchison of Martensdale. Marion Bonsall, Class of '34, is now on a ranch in Nebraska. Ralph Archer. Class of '24, is one of the outstanding kittenball pitchers of the county. Genevieve Wheeler, Class of '24. has been teaching at Nichols, Iowa, for the last five years. That is a good record. John Seymour, Class of '24, is secretary of the Martensdale Consolidated Dis- trict. John is married to Evelyn Baur. Alexander Brownlie, Class of '26, received his degree from Iowa State Teachers Coll-ege during the winter. Gordon Himstreet, Class of '27, is now managing the Himstreet Grocery in Martensdale. Gordon wasi married about a year ago to Mabel Melcher and they are making their home in the former Martensdale Bank building. Frank Smith. Class of '27, took the place of William Rhodes, deceased. as a Martensdale School bus driver. Bernice Howell, class of '28, has been doing good work in the DeSoto High School. Her glee clubs were among the state finalists last year. Bernice is teaching her fourth year at this school. Beulah Butler, Class of '30, was recently married to Delbert Burnett of In-dianola. Lawrence Harvey, Class of '32, married Gladys Uslcr during the past school year.
