I had been invited to a party on board ship one bright, starry night. On my way down the deck I stumbled over a rope which was lying in the shadow, and, as luck would have it, the captain came to my rescue. I thanked him for catching me. About that time a twinkle came into his eye which I at once recognized as belonging to my old classmate, junior Shafer. He was not much taller but was very fat and had grown a mustache, After we had talked a while. I found he had not changed much but in looks, Ile still was as devilish as ever. CNeedless to say I didn't attend the party but visited with the captain that evening.J As I left the ship in New York harbor, whom should I meet at the dock but a member of the old class, j. R. S. Meade, who was going to Paris to become a designer of women's clothing. What a job for jackie ! jack didn't look the same. Ile had become very slender and now wore a morning suit and a silk stovepipe hat. He had a carnation in his buttonhole and swished a cane as he walked gingerly in his gray spatted shoes. I hadn't time to talk as we were both hurrying on our way. ' Several mornings later I picked up the paper and to my horror read Lollypop Lost At Sea-Ten Dead and Forty-one Missing. My thought was, I wonder if junior and jackie were saved. I rushed down to the newspaper office to learn the latest reports. The girl in the office was very attractive. She had dark hair and snappy brown eyes. To the office force she was known as Maggie I in- quired further and found she was Margaret Wise. After learning the junior and jackie had been rescued, my mind was relieved and Margaret and I had a long talk. She coyly informed me she was to be married in the fall to none other than john Hamm. john was operating a race track near New York and holding car races there twice a week. john could still pilot them around the curves on two wheels himself. At my invitation john and Margaret came to visit me. After dinner we drove to the airport to see the transcontinental plane come in. Out of that great cabin plane stepped a small, demure girl and a handsome man. They looked familiar but the richness of their clothing indicated great wealth. john suddenly remarked, l'll bet that's Wilbur Bell. On coming closer we learned john was right and wehad a very happy reunion. Wilbur had succeeded in inventing a method of eliminating the back E. M. F. in electric motors and was being hailed as a second Edison. Ile had immediately married the- little sweetheart of his high school days and they were now on their way to Europe on an ex- pensive and luxurious honeymoon. I began to feel very much alone until Wilbur remarked that he had seen a baseball game in Chicago. The pitcher, a left handed successor to Dizzy Dean in skill and eccentricity, had asked about me and had promised to look me up on his next trip east. That made me feel much better. Twelve speakers were listed but on account of bad roads some were unable to be present. The winners were: Oratorical, Burl Beamg dramatic, Ruth Howell, humorous, Maxiene Smith. These winners competed in the. sub-county contest at Norwalk w-here we were awarded second place in both oratorical and dramatic divisions. Miss Brock coached the contestants. GRADE DECLAMATORY 9999 nag -ls 0 Less interest than usual was taken in grade declamatory this year. Marie Weil won in dramatic with Alice Miller second. Albert gg Gavin won in the humorous division. He also took second in the sub' 9 county contest at Spring Hill. Other speakers in the home contest were G9 Naomi Walston and joyce Martens. There were no oratorical con- 3 testants. Miss Henderson was in charge. WILBUR BELL 5 Secretary ......... jo MONROE 2 The Letter Club, an organization. founded in l928, is composed of the winners of letters in Martensdale High School. -Active membership terminates with graduation. Twice each year candidates are initiated 9 with rigorous ceremonies. Requirements for letters are set by the members of the Club and all letters standardized. At present letters are awarded in scholarship, declamatory, basketball, kittenball and to 99 9 Page Twelve two cheer leaders and one student manager yearly.
