CLASS HISTORY In September of 1947 eleven worried, but very anxious child- ren started to school here at Martel. The group has changed somewhat over the years, new faces have been gained and old ones lost. In 1959. the group is still worried and anxious, but not about the same things. Here is the enrollment for the first year: Stephen Black, Billy Bursby, Janet Goken, Jewell Grimes, Phyllis Kile, Lester Lyon, Patty Neuman, Irene Ross, Danny Sampley, Elizabeth Ann Shumaker, and Robert Vaughn. Mrs. Lyon performed the struggle of getting us started on the road to graduation. Mrs. Lyon had us for the second grade, too. We began to see that school had a serious side apart from the games and little lessons that we enjoyed the year before. This year Stephen Knaul, Susan Rorick, Helen Shuster, and James Stevens were add- ed to our class. When we passed to the third grade we were happy to go to a new room. We all liked Mrs. Winters for our new teacher. We added Gary Akers to our class that year, but we lost Stephen Knaul, Patty Neuman, Susan Rorick, Elizabeth Ann Shumaker, and James Stevens. Mrs. Winters had us for the fourth grade, too. We lost Billy Bursby and Gary Akers. We lost more than we gained, but our gain was Thomas Seif. Next year when we went into the fifth grade we had a new room and a new teacher, Mrs. Trout. In the sixth grade we were in the same room, but we had a new teacher, Mrs. Coon. We added Linda Mowry, Paul Thacker, Roy Thacker, and Marion Thacker. In the seventh grade we went upstairs. Great Excitement! Now we had more than one teacher: everything seemed new and different. We gained Joyce Plotner, but lost Phyllis Kilo, Danny Sampley, and Paul Thacker. In the eighth grade we had the same room but a new teacher, Mrs. Kinsey. We gained Jay Shelton and Dorothy Summers. We lost Joyce Plotner. Next we moved into high school. We found our freshman in- itiation was a lot of fun. We lost Jay Shelton this year. In our sophomore year we gained Marlene Dorfe and Ronald Walter, but we lost Linda Mowry, Helen Shuster, Dorothy Summers and Marion Thacker. Our junior year was quite busy. We had numerous sctivities to raise money for our class trip. We lost Marlene Dorfe at the end of this year. And now we are Useniorsn about to graduate from Martel High School. We have complained many times over, but I think we all feel a pang on leaving the scene of the last years. Especially without depending on teachers and parents. But we're anxious to try ourselves, so let's begin! Page 9
