The group has changed somewhat over the years, new faces have been gained and old ones lost. In 1959. the group is still worried and anxious, but not about the same things. Here is the enrollment for the first year: Stephen Black, Billy Bursby, Janet Goken, Jewell Grimes, Phyllis Kile, Lester Lyon, Patty Neuman, Irene Ross, Danny Sampley, Elizabeth Ann Shumaker, and Robert Vaughn. Mrs. Lyon performed the struggle of getting us started on the road to graduation. Mrs. Lyon had us for the second grade, too. We began to see that school had a serious side apart from the games and little lessons that we enjoyed the year before. This year Stephen Knaul, Susan Rorick, Helen Shuster, and James Stevens were add- ed to our class. When we passed to the third grade we were happy to go to a new room. We all liked Mrs. Winters for our new teacher. We added Gary Akers to our class that year, but we lost Stephen Knaul, Patty Neuman, Susan Rorick, Elizabeth Ann Shumaker, and James Stevens. Mrs. Winters had us for the fourth grade, too. We lost Billy Bursby and Gary Akers. We lost more than we gained, but our gain was Thomas Seif. Next year when we went into the fifth grade we had a new room and a new teacher, Mrs. Trout. In the sixth grade we were in the same room, but we had a new teacher, Mrs. Coon. We added Linda Mowry, Paul Thacker, Roy Thacker, and Marion Thacker. In the seventh grade we went upstairs. Great Excitement! Now we had more than one teacher: everything seemed new and different. We gained Joyce Plotner, but lost Phyllis Kilo, Danny Sampley, and Paul Thacker. In the eighth grade we had the same room but a new teacher, Mrs. Kinsey. We gained Jay Shelton and Dorothy Summers. We lost Joyce Plotner. Next we moved into high school. We found our freshman in- itiation was a lot of fun. We lost Jay Shelton this year. In our sophomore year we gained Marlene Dorfe and Ronald Walter, but we lost Linda Mowry, Helen Shuster, Dorothy Summers and Marion Thacker. Our junior year was quite busy. We had numerous sctivities to raise money for our class trip. We lost Marlene Dorfe at the end of this year. And now we are Useniorsn about to graduate from Martel High School. We have complained many times over, but I think we all feel a pang on leaving the scene of the last years. Especially without depending on teachers and parents. But we're anxious to try ourselves, so let's begin! Page 9 W v -Irv-f ll' an U0 w M- bgmagine STEVE JP-WT RON J BOB Pse 0 g JEWELL CLASS PROPHECY On this prosperous year of 1989 the class of S9 is hold- ing its 30th annual reunion since graduating from Martel in 59. We are holding this reunion at the lovely Coral Room in the Beautiful Hotel nMartelianU which is located on Black Boulevard. This lovely hotel is owned by one of the class members of 59. His name is Steve Black. Stephen has a chain of Hotels around the Martel area. He has acquired these by gambling at the Roulette tables in Las Vegas. He is a widower and has two children to support. Serving as the toastmaster for the evening is Ronald Walter. Ron is a professional basketball player who plays with the Steve Allen nAll Stars.W Ron of course is married and has one child a boy named Ronald Jr. The Nalter's family reside in Columbus, Ohio. The most beautiful sight of the evening are the two love- ly ladies over in the corner talking to their husbands. They are Jewell Grimes and Janet Goken. The younger of the two is Janet Goken. She is married to a wealthy merchant who is one of the executives at the North Electric Company. Jewell and her husband live near Mansfield. They have three children. Her husband is the manager of the State Theater in Mansfield. Serving the drinks for this occasion is Lester Lyon. Les was the boy voted most likely to succeed but something went wrong along the way he got married. Mr. Lyon is employed by John Bears Furtypton. His income is around 62 thousand a year. Les got his start from the Senior class. He was treasurer. My name is Bob Vaughn. I am reporter for this occasion. I am married and have five sets of twins. My home is in Columbus. I am employed by the C. B. S. T.V. network. I am known on T.V. as Harvey Keck. Page 1 1 CLASS Wlll We, the Seniors of Martel High School, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make this our last will and testament. We bequeath to the Junior Class our rightful heirs and privileges and rights as Seniors, our home room and seats, occupy them, but do not try to fill them, as well as any books or pencils found therein. To the faculty we give a sense of relief that we have at last graduated and will give them no more trouble. JANET GOKEN leaves her winning smile to Phyllis Bear and her E5TITty to be class president to Ruth Coulter. LESTER LYON leaves his basketball shoes to Charles Pinyerd, Els shyness to Fred Bear, and his basketball ability to Dennis Holtsberry. STEPHEN BLACK leaves his manners in class to Raymond Barr, his joEes and wise cracks to Larry Grimes, and his motorcycle to Charlie Pinyerd. JEWELL GRIMES leaves her typing ability to Tom Wyckoff and all Her Boyfrlends to Mary Lou Honaker. RONALD WALTER leaves his ability to win the girls to Babe Howard, HIs I95O Ford to Charles Holtsberry, and his height to Tom Wyckoff. ROBERT YAUGHN leaves his bright green Chevy with the bright red Tendersiirts to Jim Berry, his size 95 basketball shoes to Jay Rambo, and his low grades to Nancy Gardner. In Witness Whereof, We, Robert Vaughn and Ronald Walter, have set our hand and seal hereto the twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty- nine K1959l. zewawsl Signed, sealed, published and declared as and for our last will and testament by the Senior Class of 1959 the above- named, in the presence of us, who, at their request and in the presence of them and of each other, have subscribed our names hereto as witnesses on the day and year last aforesaid. This year we played our first game with the Alumni, de feating them by 78 to M3 We opened the league by playing LaRue and defeating them by a score of 63 to 38. Although we lost the next three games we kept on trying and kept the team spirit up. We are doing exceptionally well compared to years gone by. A man to thank for this progress is our coach, Mr. Paul S. Zwayer. He has worked patiently and devoted his time to teaching us how to play real basketball.
