First and Second Grades The first and second grades are taught by Mary Alice Lyon. We learn to work and play together. lt is great fun to come to school and learn to read, draw, paint, spell and work with numbers. One of the highlights of the year was the day we made our movie on Community Helpers. Of course we enjoyed our part in the Christmas program and our Hallowe'en and Valentine parties. We took part in the March Community Club program too. The two things we enioy most is to spell and paint. We have had a very happy school year. Third and Fourth Grades The third and fourth grades began the year with thirty-four cheerful, busy boys and girls. This number was soon increased to thirty-seven. During the year, we have had only eight little girls to maintain a feminine influence in the midst of such a large group of boys. We have enioyed working together to learn our reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, social studies, and English. New books in third grade reading and fourth grade social studies have added interest to the work. Anumber of new library books also helped us in our work. The principal aim of activities in our room is to gain in ability to work independently. During the first semester of the year, we made a special unit study of health, stressing nutrition. In the second semester, we enioyed a unity study of the history and progress of transportation. This study was especially fun for the boys because it included horses, boats, stagecoaches, airplanes, etc. The children have taken pride in participating in special programs for Christmas, Community Club and Farmers' Institute. ln the room, we have had parties to celebrate Hallowe'en and Valentine's Day. A gift exchange and the movie Silent Night high- lighted our Christmas. We leave this year-saddened at parting-but glad in the knowledge of work well 23
